I seem to remember that John Barnes was the first black player Liverpool signed, and there was some disquiet about that. The fact that he turned out to be a fan favourite helped enormously, but I remember some disquiet at his signing. Having said that, Everton waited even longer, I think.
Huddersfield is lacking in many other ways, and therefore I have no issue with your view that it is a generally sub-standard town that props a team that is undeserving of the town's affection.
Just while we are on the issue of diversity, I do think that this is one area that the rugby league ought to target. We are not and have never been a racist sport. The game is big (I think) in the former Soviet Union states, the inhabitants of which are making communities in England. There must be a market there.
