Why didn't he just ask Sheringham after the game why he didn't shake his hand instead of acting like a child about it.

| EE will be knocking out another one over De Jong tonight.
He broke Stuart Holden's leg last night in a challenge which was far worse that the one which Ramsey broke his leg in. His punishment. A free kick. The ref was 5m from the the challenge. De Jong dived in, he was late, his studs went right into Holden's shin and the ref did nothing over it. Well done FIFA, you've really improved the standard of reffing.
Edit: He was booked. Stupid ESPN didn't show the booking, they must have been showing a replay of the incident at the time and only had notification of the card flash underneath the score.

| Didn't watch England the other night was at the evening's premier football clash of FCUM v Ossett Town but Carrick has got on my nerves lately. He is so sideways it's criminal, his set piece delivery is generally dire, can't remember him taking control of a game this season. He is the definition of nothingness for me. In all honesty the same can be said for most of United's midfield apart from Fletcher and Giggs.

Baines wasn't poor. Graeme Le Saux said today on the radio that he was very impressed with him and it was a very impressive performance that should have pushed him to the front of the queue to backup Ashley Cole, praising his tactical discipline when those in the other defensive positions weren't doing so well (Upson and Brown).

Please, please, please tell me you didn't write that you'd pick Nicky Shorey ahead of Leighton Baines? I'm positive you didn't write that, it surely can't be right. If it is, I'll have whatever you've been taking.

Agree with that apart from Barry (depends who else is fit) and Milner (I like him and would definitely take him to SA, just not sure if he'd be the best option on the left wing). Barry has been solid under Capello but has been pretty average this season. I'd play a fit Hargreaves over him but sadly, I can't see him making it.
The team has to be built around Rooney and if that means dropping the big man alongside him like Capello seems to favour then it should be done. The formation Man Utd have been playing in recent months is something that England could easily replicate but I can't see Capello opting for it. Ideally, I'd like to see Gerrard (more advanced) and Lampard (sitting a little deeper but still getting forward) in the middle playing in front of a holding midfielder with Lennon on the right and a fit Joe Cole on the left. Before his injury he'd been England's best player for the previous two years and it's really sad that he can't even get into the squad at the moment. Never been a massive fan of Downing but he's been impressive for Villa and I'd be tempted to give him another chance if he carries on playing the way he is.

Barry's one of those players who makes good players around him play better. His problem at City has been that he's been asked to do a lot more than that and isnt really up to it. One of our weaknesses is that we do not have a dominant midfield player in the Lampard or Gerrard mould. I wouldnt take his City form (other than that he had his best game of the season at the weekend) as an indicator of how well he'd play for England.

| Quote ="Asim"The biggest surprise about Germany/Argentina is that, under Maradona, Argentina actually looked like a competent team for a change. Having seen a few of their qualifiers they played like a bunch of individuals with no idea what they were supposed to be doing as a whole, if last night wasn't a one off and they continue to build into a better unit for the tournament then they have every chance of doing well.
On the other hand Germany were disappointing, they didn't look like a team at all. I'm not sure if they were experimenting but there were a few players I wasn't familiar with and they didn't impress. Then again we all know that they are always a different proposition when it comes to the actual tournament.'"
Argentina looked surprisingly solid and coherent for a Maradona coached side didn't they?
I think there was an element of experimenting by the Germans. The midfield was maybe too offensively positioned, with Schweinsteiger (although I'm aware he's playing this role with Bayern, I personally prefer him on the flank) starting in the middle with Ballack. Özil has been struggling with form since Christmas when the speculation started to intensify about his future. Hopefully he can sort his head out and concentrate on his football instead of a move to Madrid / Arsenal / Italy before the end of the season and get some form back, because on his day he's a cracking little player.
A possible concern for Germany is, like with England, the goalkeeping position. Adler didn't look too convincing - maybe it was just nerves and a bit too much eagerness and wanting to impress. Löw had made it clear he's his number 1 and will keep the faith with him, so hopefully his confidence hasn't been knocked too badly. Despite what the pundits said, he wasn't [itotally[/i to blame for the Argentina goal, and he's still relatively young and learning. Apart from the goal with Mertesacker caught napping, the defence is looking pretty strong though.
The strikeforce is another problem at the minute though IMO. Podolski hasn't scored for months, Klose is getting limited game time at Bayern, and Gomes has never really impressed me at international level. Hoping Podolski and Klose can hit some form before the end of the year - we all know that they're class on the international stage.
It surprises me the backlash that the England team got. 3-1 winners at home to the African champions. Germany lost at home, barely created a chance, and it was generally a very unspectacular and boring game. Yet, everybody here seems realtively calm, and understands it was just a friendly, and that they'll get it right before the WC. Come on England fans cheer up - and keep the faith FFS!!

| Elmander is a shocking excuse for a striker. Should have made it 3-0 right before half-time but ballooned it over the goal when he had time and space. Saw him in the game against Tottenham where Bolton were awesome and he was similarly poor.

Swap deal with a total value of 10m, according to most sources. Never noticed him before the Spurs game and today was just an extension to that. Even the best strikers miss sitters but he just looks like one of those scammers who somehow manage to con managers into playing them. Is he really that bad or have I just seen a couple of really bad games for him?

No. It would have been if Vokes had been able to finish, but he couldn't so United are top by 2 points.
Wolves were the better team really. They had a couple of decent chances first half, United none. An innocuous United cross wasn't dealt with by the Wolves defender, ball fell to Scholes, who went round one defender who was pretending to be a statue, and one who was pretending to be the Saadam Hussein statue being toppled after the invasion of Iraq. Easy finish.
Wolves were plodding in attack late on, ball pinged around a little and fell to Vokes, 7 yards out and he blasts it over the bar. Scholes chance was easy, Vokes chance made Scholes chance look difficult.

Was a solid player in France where he was the main man of a pretty average side. I remember when we played Toulouse in a CL qualifier, all the pre-match talk was about Elmander but he looked pretty poor, I'd seen him play a few times and he looked kinda like a Santa Cruz type of player when I seen him, he was strong, held the ball up well and was good at bringing others into play, but in his time here he's done none of that. I remember seeing him for Sweden at the Euro's and they used him as a right winger, he never really stood out, he tried and was a willing runner, but he never stood out in a pretty average side. Was extremely surprised when Bolton signed him, he wasn't exactly young and he wasn't exactly proven, for that kind of money, you'd be looking for a prospect who'd come in, offer you a few years of top service then be sold on at a hefty profit. It was a very strange signing IMO.
