| Harmison has to play now imo.
I really don't see us going with 2 spinners at Cardiff tbh so i'd go-
Cook
Strauss
Bopara
KP
Collingwood
Prior
Flintoff
Broad
Swann
Harmison
Anderson
Thats bowling line up looks very very good imo.
Fancy our chances after seeing the Aussies ths week.

Why??
He's got a few wickets in a game that the Aussies don't seem particularly bothered about...so has Graham Onions, why should he get dropped??

| because hes unsettled Hughes both times and bowled a good tight line, hes evn swinging the ball with hes full pitched delivary with a high arm action like hes and swing its very hard too pick it. Onions has done nothing wrong at all either its a tough choice but i would probably go for Harmison looks as though hes got that fire back

Harmison's test match average since 2004 is 39.24, 145 wickets in 48 tests (excluding games against Bangladesh).
A few wickets in a warm-up cannot override that, he's more than had his chance in test cricket.

Amen to that mate...plus, Onions has been in better form than Harmison this year anyway - more wickets at a better average..its just that whenever Harmison bowls a few good balls then people think "ooh he's back to his best"...its time to move on and the fast bowling line-up we've got at the moment worked very well against the West Indies so should be left to at least start the Ashes series.

| Straight shoot out between Onions and Harmison for me.
Don't really see the benefit of going in with two spinners or else we'll be running with just three bowlers effectively until the second innings when the wicket will start turning.

Agreed, and not just because Yorkshire's need is greater.
From what I have seen this season, and from what people who have seen more than me have said, he wasn't even bowling that well for Yorkshire before his international call, which came as a bit of a surprise. I think he'd have had to have done something exceptional in this game to force his way into the test side anyway, even moreso now that many are suggesting we won't go with two spinners anyway.

| Stll think that Onions was hugely flattered by a poor WI team. But there is logic and consistency behind the selection. Harmison's had too many false dawns to be picked just yet, Rashid isnt quite ready, Bresnan isnt really test class and Sidebottom also needs to prove he's back to where he was two years ago.

| I can't really see why Bell's in there. He was deservedly dropped a while back and hasn't done enough to get back in ahead of any of the incumbent top 5 IMO.
I thought Harmison might get in on the logic of picking someone the Aussies might not fancy facing. (He's clearly a different bowler in this country to overseas, notwithstanding his spectacular series in the West Indies in 2003/4.) I also thought Sidebottom as well as Harmison might have edged ahead of Onions in the selectors' thinking, athough I like his wholehearted and aggressive approach and on current form deserved to keep his place.
Giving a young spinner his debut in a series like this would have been an adventurous choice so I'm not surprised Rashid has lost out to Panesar, although as Swann is clearly first choice it would have been less of a gamble to go with Rashid in the event of playing two spinners. Rashid's far superior batting might also have been useful, and as he would only have played in the event of a fourth seamer (i.e. Onions) being omitted we wouldn't have had two bowlers with only a couple of Tests between them in the side.
It looks like Monty took a few wickets just in time in the warm up game at Edgbaston. (Although the same logic doesn't apply to Harmison?)

| Think the pitch might have gone against Harmo for the first Test, not expected to have too much bounce and also Onions did nothing wrong in his first two tests.

Bell is only in as back up for the batsmen, his inclusion shows how little depth there is in the batting department.
I think Harmison really peed off the England management with his physical condition in the caribbean, bowling at 80mph didnt help either.
