£20m what? £20m more than if they were in the championship? Or £20m more than if there was no football team?

Absolutely, think it was a similar figure quoted for when B'Pool got to the Prem.

| But more people are likely to go to Blackpool for a weekend, and spend a fortune there. Even then, I doubt it would be £20 million.
£20 million in Wigan would mean that each of the (average) 3000 visiting fans per game (57,000 over the year) would have to spend £350.87 when they visit. Somehow, I dont think they come close to that!

No, it's a lot more than £20m just for the team I think.
It's the amount the town got in terms of increased visitors and general exposure, as well as the business' that get more benefits from sponsoring the team.
Just the fact that the name of Wigan will be more widely known across the world will contribute (although I'm not sure how that could be quantified).

You get a minimum of £20m for being in the Prem which is the figure the press always likes to quote. (I think that's what you get for finishing bottom). You then get an extra £50k per place up the table you finish and around £10m (minimum) for TV.
Obv being in the PL increases sponsorships but most of these are from abroad. The new advertising boards at Latics for example advertise Thai Airways and holidays in the Caribbean as well as 12bet advertising in Chinese. The town gets naff all from that.
I think last year Latics' income was around £45m but the expenditure was around £40m and we had debts of £25m. That is why we constantly need to sell players.
In all honesty I have no idea how much the town gets from Latics being in the PL but I know it's an amount that is better to have than not.

This is how I see it.Out of those 3000 average ,most of them will not even go into town. They will drive there and back (or go on a coach) in a day and spend nothing in the "town" just spend in the stadium. And even Dave Weasel doesn't charge £350.87 for a pie and a pint does he ?

| I would say that the value to the town is virtually nothing. To the club, maybe £20 million, but every brass button of that goes on paying wages to all these foreign merceneries that neither live in Wigan, nor spend their excessive wages in Wigan. This is born out by the unsustainable business model that they operate where the wage bill alone swallows up all the tv money.
The only employees of the Latics who would spend their money in the town are the likes of Leyther Matt, and I'd bet their wages would be the same if they were in the Championship.

So that's £20m towards the economies of Knutsford, Lymm and Nangreaves.

It's way more than that. Wigan got £38m TV money (which includes an element of performance based cash) for the 2009/10 season and it's even more now given the foreign TV deal.

That's an interesting read Andy ,thanks for posting it.
One thing that stands out is :-
[i"When Wigan opened the new stadium in 1999, it was one of the largest outside the Premier League. While the ambition has to be applauded, in hindsight it’s tempting to think that they should have opted for a smaller ground. The stadium is actually owned by another one of Dave Whelan’s companies, Wigan Football Company Limited, which has granted the football club a 25-year lease at rates determined by match revenues, resulting in a £1.1 million charge for the 2009/10 season. Shared with the Wigan Warriors, the stadium was initially named the JJB after Whelan’s old company, but changed its name to the DW Stadium in August 2009 after another Whelan venture, the DW Sports Fitness Company."[/i
Has it not been handed over to the Latics ?

| IIRC premiership clubs get around £50m a season just off tv rights. Then theyve got ticket sales, hospitality and merchandise etc yet most still run at a loss Most of the clubs are borrowing against future money they will receive or/and have one major benfactor. Its absolute madness and only a matter of time before something goes wrong in a big way. A big club will end up going bust with the way its going. The tv money is as good as swallowed up instantly by the astronomical wages, even players are on 30k a week. Its all just daft money which is why its losing/lost its appeal to me. Its all about who has the biggest wallet nowadays.
