| To be fair, surely Marshall looks better than Davies because he's seen a hell of a lot more ball?
Both have been good, and Davies saved our bacon with that great bit of defending, and the pace to win a penalty, which led to a Wigan score.
On current form I don't think I'd drop either to play Tierney.

Couldn't agree more.
I think Davies has a bit of mongrel in him and I wouldn't be surprised if he is a regular for the rest of the season and he is for me far superior than Tierney in every department.
Whichever winger plays on the right he is going to be starved of chances compared to whoever plays on the left.
I'm just glad that we have such great lads who have come in and improved the team.

| I think the big loser in this situation could end up being Tierney. He did a good job of filling in for Manfredi last year but he has an error in him and I feel these two youngsters are showing themselves to be better players.
When you produce as many as us you can't keep them all and all you can do sometimes is ensure you keep the right ones. Five wingers in one squad would seem excessive especially when all of them are talented enough to play first team superleague on a regular basis.

| Both the kids are doing really well and neither as yet are showing any signs of fading. Tierney will probably be the big looser of of this as both have overtaken him imo.

| Davies and Marshall over Tierney for me, both proper wingers who will take the outside of given a chance. And impressive under the high ball unlike Tierney.

Tierney has been found out a few times with the ball in the air. His other area of concern is the grubber around the back where he often flaps and misses. Having said that he carries the ball out and gains good yards with that low to the ground stance.

He looks very frantic in defence when defending kicks which is the opposite of certainly how Marshall has looked. Young Davies hasn't looked quite as secure under the contested high ball but he's not been mugged either and he's very solid in the rest of his game. The two youngsters are eating up the ground as well so they look pretty well rounded.
In a salary cap sport it'll be tough to keep all five wingers. In fact you would probably say it's unwise to do that. We look well stocked everywhere next year but if rumours are true and Tautai is off it would be helpful to maybe use the salary of Tierney plus his own to replace him.

| You have to feel sorry for Tierney. He improved no end last season and but for injury would still be in the team because he let no one down. However the simple fact is that Davies looks to be a superior player. Tierney's displays for Scotland against the best players in the world should mean that he will have no shortage of suitors. I doubt he would want to stay to be Escare's back up.

| By the way - on Escare. What a coaching job Waney and co have done on him!
Absolutely safe under the high ball and hasn't, to my eyes, missed a tackle yet. All this from a guy who was a defensive liability at Catalans.

| I'm very pleasantly surprised at how well Marshall and Davies have done. It's common for kids to look good in their first couple of games and then fade a bit. These two seem to have a bit of staying power. They both look very good all round players and both imo have overtaken Tierney who, despite his best efforts will never be better than solid. Budgie is in for quite a long run at centre and Wane has a selection headache should Gildart and Manfredi return later in the season.

Yep. Wane confirms that he plans to keep Burgess at centre until Gilfdart is back, hopefully in June.

It will be a nice problem to have when Gildart & Gelling are both fit.

He has missed a couple, notably against hull & Castleford. I'm with you though he has come on leaps and bounds and is getting better with every game he plays, Sam will struggle to oust him from the fullback role on current form.

Im going to post the following just to play devil's advocate because for what it's worth I absolutely love watching Escaré play for us.
Sam Tomkins 2016 : Apps 16, Tries 6, Assists 10, Tackles 109, Missed Tackles 9, Tackle Busts 36, Average Gain 5.33, Errors 10.
Morgan Escaré 2017: Apps 10, Tries 4, Assists 2, Tackles 62, Missed Tackles 7, Tackle Busts 40, Average Gain, 7.79, Errors 8.
I found it interesting reading considering the contrasting opinions people have of how these two players performed for us.
Tomkins per game had: more assists, less missed tackles, and less errors.
Escaré per game had: better average gain and more tackle busts.
Per game they were very similar in: tries and tackles.

It's all about expectations I suppose as well as value for money. There is huge expectation on Tomkins due to his reputation, past achievements for Wigan and because of the salary he's paid whereas there was little expectation on Escare as he'd fell out of favour at Catalans and I presume is (or was) on a low wage here.
In plain black and white it looks like they're bringing about the same to the side for vastly differing sums of money but I think we were probably seeing Tomkins at his worst against Escare possibly somewhere near his best.
Long term I think there's room for both and the side will be in good shape with them both in it.

Good post. I've always loved Sam. But I think his future is in the halves as he no longer has the pace of his youth. He is the best passer of the ball in the club including Lockers and he kicks better than both George and Tommy. Just a question mark over his defence I suppose. Though I think he will be fine.

In the line his defence is fine (or it was when he last played as a halfback). Like most fullbacks he gets caught out defensively as the last line but he's up to the task of dealing with the increased workload if he is to go back to stand off/scrum half IMO.

Escare's kicking from hand is I think superior and I'm sure his goal kicking is better.
What statistics don't show is that ST looks like a startled rabbit under the high ball and Escare has brought a sense of control and composure to the defence that ST I don't think is capable of. Any guy who lets a high ball bounce on a regular basis as ST did isn't really a FB.
Id be pretty amazed if ST didn't go into the halves rather than back to FB. Personally I want ST to get his hands on the ball as often as he can to give him maximum opportunity to cause havoc in the attack and he can do this from 6.
As most have said it will be a nice problem for SW to juggle

| With the displays from these two this year, i wonder how this has affected Charnleys options if he is unhappy in RU... BTW, i have no idea how well or badly he is doing there, don't care much either.

| I've always thought Burgess was more suited to centre in the long term anyway, and now he's physically matured, and Davies and Marshall have emerged, I think now is the perfect time to move him to centre. His pace, size, hands and ability to run excellent lines are more suited to centre anyway. Plus, his kick returns have always been the weakest part of his game, so moving him out of the back 3 would nullify that.
I'd even be tempted to play him in the centres for England against Samoa.
