Sorry mate, the best side in the league are 2 times reigning SL champs. You're a close 2nd though. NO matter what, WIGAN are still the most successful club in the history of the game. keep trying but you'll never catch us up.

Currently we are top of the league, hence us currently being the best team in the country this year. You may be the most successful club ever, however this wont help you this year. History will do nothing for you now.

You may do one day, however this would be nothing to do with your History. It would be to do with decisions that you make now. For what it's worth I think with a couple more signings you will be up there challenging for honours, but only time will tell what happens.

Well that's not strictly true. Here's a couple examples off the top of my head of why it does effect the present. Our ability to attract players is largely based on our standing and past history rather than any tangible current possibility of honours. It's more a feeling that it's only a matter of time until we return to former glories. Similarly our fanbase is based on the great Wigan history and I'm sure you will appreciate the importance of that with regards to becoming a force in any sport. It's the reason, despite their current good results, fans of Saints and Leeds don't fear the sudden emergance of maybe Castleford or Wakefield as a major force wheras they always know, as indeed do you, the probibility that Wigan will one day once again take their place at the top table. I'm sure there are many more examples but, equally, I'm sure there's enough right there for you to accept you were wrong....

Indeed, you can see his colours a little better when Wigan aren't on but the old enemy are.

You sound like the Liverpool fans I work with. You attract players because of the money you pay them, nothing else. If you had been relegated and so couldn't pay as much money, do you think your history would have attracted star players, regardless of how rich it is. I seriously doubt it. Wigan have a greater History than Leeds now, however, who do you think Saints would fear playing more currently? I certainly wouldn't say I was wrong.

Theres truth in what you say, however the same can also apply to Huddersfield who were prior to WW2 the true giants of RL ,and only really started to decline from the mid 1950's onwards.

OOOOhhhh I would question that comment. I think Wigan gave you a much better game than Leeds did and we will raise our game for you again next week. (I bloody hope)! By the way, we were relegated in 1978-79 and as you will know from history, the phoenix came up from the ashes and attracted the likes of Brett kenny, John Ferguson and erm.... that guy who played at Stains, Andy Platt oh and garry Connolly. Not bad signings for a team who had been relegated just a few seasons earlier eh?

Of course, and I would again agree up to a point. I suppose you can say that it's the fact that Wigan's 'history' is more recent and more impressive that makes the difference. You could draw parallels with, say the giants that were Leeds in Soccer and Man U. There's really no comparison.

As for the rest of it, it is a complete irrelevence. If we went bust and couldn't pay our players at all we would only attract amateurs. What's your point? We didn't get relegated and, whether you like it or not, our history does have a draw to players. We aren't regarded as 'the biggest name in RL' (as once said by your former coach DA among many others) because we are currently winning everything in sight. In fact we have only won one trophy in the last decade yet we are still regarded thus. And, eventhough it doesn't suit your argument, we can't actually pay players more money than other teams....it's called the Salary Cap! Still, if you think you weren't wrong, then I won't burst your little bubble. Carry on believing what you want.

My Little Bubble? You think your History affects what happens now. Do you think Wakefield, Castleford e.t.c walked onto the pitch this year and thought oh god this is the great Wigan Rugby League, the biggest name in Rugby League, we really cant win. The scores would suggest that they didn't. The scores would suggest that your great past has absolutely no affect on what happens this year.

Well as a matter of fact you said history had no effect on the present and I have given you two perfectly good examples of where it can be said to directly have just such an effect. QED you were wrong. If you want to start quoting instances where it doesn't have an effect and expect me to derail the argument just to appease your inability to accept when you've made a mistake then you'll be sadly disappointed.

I'd say the clubs great history (and lots of money) had an impact on gleeson signing. so yes it will impact on this year!
