| It gives data to show who's actually putting in the effort in games and training. If someone only makes a few metres with the ball, but has run an absolute ton with a high heart rate, then their effort can't be faulted.

He can't accurately keep track of every player at once, plus he might just be hoping for the Hawthorne effect (i.e peope who know they are being measured tend to respond positively to the attention).

| Check out the vidio on youtube wi9th mark bitcon in pre season with gloucester, he is using it on there. It shows who is giving their maximum in training and who is simply going through the motions. Basically no one can hide!!!

| This kind of stuff is common place in Union and in the NRL I think personally it is crucial for the conditioning coach and other staff to have this information.
In training it is vital so as to target the correct energy systems and training goals.
Eg if you are training for Power you should do this from a fully recovered position, but it is impossible to assess this without information in real time on heart rate etc.
Whats with the title of this thread by the way, its a cracking bit of information but the title of the thread may well mean people do not look at it......I did because i am nosy.

| Quote ="sbohan"Prepare for a pretty geeky post... I doubt the validity of this system. GPS is in best cases only accurate to around 5 metres and that is with top end gear. In an embedded device the size of what would be needed I'd envisage the accuracy being more towards the ~20 metre mark.
Would love to see the specs of this thing, you could do some pretty cool stuff with the data that is collected.'"
The GPS in my iphone is better than 5 metres, and the GPS used in surveying and construction is generally within 10mm.

| The Accuracy depends on the technology
GPS using satellites can be very accurate as it uses the distance between the devices location and four other satellites to deduce the location co-ordinates using something called trilateration
GPS using radio signal (GPRS, HSPA) to triangulate your position is less accurate, my phone has this and can usually get my position within 20m but sometimes its only accurate to 200m
I expect this is already used in other sports, so its not like this sort of stuff has major flaws that the team will uncover

| I have no doubt that Karl Pryce will be better than Greg Inglis.
Fielden will return to his old self.
Piggy will slim down and be identical to Cam Smith.
Feka will stay on for 80 mins running every time like he did against Hull at home in 2007.
Sam Tomkins will bulk up to a big ball of sheer strength and be like another prop.
Mathers will return and p*ss all over Slater next year in ther 4 nations.

| According to article in the Observer the players are going to have a GPS device fitted to their bodies so that each player can be monitored to see how many yards they cover in a match also to monitor their heart rates and how quickly they recover from collisions. Maguire said" The GPS monitors players and finds out certain things about them and what exactly they are doing in training". So no hiding place then.

| not sure mate but i do not know of any, there may be one or 2 but i would not think any more than that if any.
Any club with a bit of cash should make them a priority piece of kit, but with money being tight at most clubs i would be very surprised if they were common place.
What is fantastic about them is they take out the guess work when calculating a players work to rest ratio for whatever there training aim is, ie hypertrophy, strength/strength endurance, power/power endurance.
Recovery rates are crucial in targeting these goals and now we will have info related to resting pulse rate and heart rate training zones with real time information to the trainers which will ensure the players are training what the coaches want them to.
Its a piece of kit i have mentioned in the past we should invest in after going to some Union clubs, and personally think it will give us an advantage over any team who does not use this technology.
Rugby League is quickly becoming a game of millimetres with the game breaking plays coming down to the tiniest of margins, this will undoubtedly aid us in my opinion.

If they have it has come in with Nathan Brown, would not surprise me as Mr Davey is always willing to invest his own money into the club.

The reason I asked is because Leeds look far fitter than any other SL team. If any one is using it I would have said them.

If any other teams are using them I would say it would be Hudds and Leeds. Bradford had the basic heart rate monitors but they were the old style and not overly accurate, certainly not in the same league or as versatile as this kit.

| One of the coaching staff regularly makes an Australia trip during the summer months and reports with certain recommendations gleened from spending time with the NRL clubs. Last years delegation reported this GPS system as an absolute 'must have'. They were raving about it, glad to see its come to fruition.
