I think the most truth comes from these statements. It was quite rightly a red (although for a moment I didn't think Child was going to do it), but there was no malicious intent, it was simply careless, and many MANY incidents MUCH worse than this (for example Cunningham fracturing Stosic's eye socket last season) go completely unpunished.

Maybe we should go for the Keith Senior defence. "I didn't [imean[/i to do it, it was an accident."

One other thing... Coley went STRAIGHT in with the apology immediately afterwards. Good on him for that.

The sending off was the correct decision. Just because most of the other refs in Super League don't have the guts to make the tough decisions doesn't mean all refs have to be like that. There's not much consistency but it was still the right call.

Anything more than a 1 game ban would be ridiculous though. The arm wasn't swinging, it was just high and a very lazy attempt. There have been far worse tackles that have escaped serious punishment and will be throughout the season. That said, there's no doubt who the RFL wan't to win in 2 weeks time, so a 2 game ban wouldn't surprise me.

Well I agree with that. I've seen them kind of tackles being got away with so often. But I still think its a red card offence. The consistency is no surprise as is the fact it was Video Ref Phil Bentham who gave the nod (if you watch it you can hear Bentham telling Child to send off.

Had a lot of money on you guys tonight at -20 and it was all thrown away not by Coley's sending off (50/50 for me,maybe a sin bin) but by Child's pure intent of evening the penalty count up and trying to get Catalans back into the game with baffling decisions.

If he hadnt been sent off then yes, however he was sent off so a 1 game ban and a fine would be the correct punishment.

Personally it doesn't bother me. It's become the norm this season that we give the opposition a chance by competing with only 12 men for significant portions of each match. It also seems to be the norm that in most cases they're not good enough to make it count.

I was wondering though about the late challenge on the Wigan kicker. Isn't that supposed to be an automatic yellow card? Even one-eyed Eddie commented on that. Strange how some 'automatics' count, but others don't.

Sending off aside, I thought Child was awful. In particular one clear interference call that saw no interference what so ever.

Do you not think that might be because you can't use the sin bin for a high tackle?

It looked a lot worse than it actually was imo but havent really got any complaints about the sending off. I do think though that it was a grab rather than a swinging arm and that the initial contact was below the neck, it was just a very lazy attempt. You see tackles like this all the time where the ref doesnt even send the player off. He will probably still get a 1 or 2 match ban though.
