I don't agree.
When the first big fall was predicted (before chrismtas) We rang the council because we live on gathurst hill, and it's a nightmare when it is gritted!! They said it was the number one priority and it would be done. It wasn't, and mum work me at 8 to pull a car out of our front garden, that day we pulled two more cars out, and one out of our neighbours garden. As well as watching a woman and her young child slide all the way down the hill sideways, as in perpendicular to the way she should have been travelling, sideways.
This time the hill has been gritted properly, with snow ploughs up and down it all day. Granted, I haven't been anywhere near the middle of wigan let alone the other side of it, but at the very least the area around us has been gritted properly.
And anyway, whoever said before that it was 2 inches of snow really needs to go outside. It's more than that, and anyway, when was the last time we had TWO inches of snow, let alone what it actually is!! The council can't be expected to prepare for every possiblity, no matter how minor the chances are.

Apparently their was a power loss in Wrightington and other Wigan areas towards Chorley between 7:30am and Lunchtime.
Looks like it's past us for now though - www.raintoday.co.uk/

bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have they never heard of ROCK SALT
stick that down at the first signs of freeze and snow will melt.
SNOW PLOUGHS ?
THESE CONDITIONS ARNT RARE.....its just that it doesnt normally last this long.
if they stockpiled salt, and invested in snow ploughs we would be in this mess.
last weekend when we had a partial thaw, i cleared my paths and drive and pavement by my house (at a price i may add)
so why the fook didnt the council get a few JCBs and clear the roads? it was coming up in layers.
caught with out pants down every year at -5 and a bit of snow, whilst folk in Moscow are getting to work in 4 ft of snow and -35

As for too many of your tribe being at home, why don't you go out n try and have a laugh with them? Failing that, maybe your parents could try these in the next life:

Sorry but these conditions are rare. I am 25 and don't ever remember so much snow so its not only the length of time but the amount of snow (today in particular). I'm not saying the more couldn't have been done in some areas to clear roads but with the amount of snow that has been put down today there is very little that can be done to clear everywhere.

| How anyone can expect our council to be prepared for this weather in this part of the country, I don't know.
In some places its like this quite alot so they have more grit, snow tires, modified vehicles... etc.
IMO the council have done well to do as much as they have, every single main road has been gritted in conditions that are hard to cope with, I saw one truck sliding backwards.

Tbh i think it has been a bit of a balls up. I have not seen any evidence of significant gritting an any of the major routes and to add to this the council don't seem bothered about dealing with areas that really need it (for instance access to sheltered accomodation and routes to hospitals).

| The problem is people who don't know how to drive in these conditions.
It took me 1hr & 40mins to get to work at middlebrook this morning because of idiots in their rear wheel drive cars trying to floor it up the hill on Bolton Rd and backing the traffic up to Aspull.
Got sent home from work at 3.00pm and it took 30mins tops.

I work on middlebrook as well but didn't manage to get in today as Poolstock Lane was gridlocked by the time I'd found out the kids school was shut so I worked from home.
Which way would you say is best towards Middlebrook - Aspull or Hindley?

The amount of grit they can lay is not fit to deal with this much snow, that is the same for all coucils. How is that their fault?
Like someone else said, people don't know how to drive on it.

Unsure of Hindley as I come over Red Rock.
They've had it far worse over towards Horwich though.

your 25?
iirc we have had 2 similar winters in your lifetime.
last one was about 15 yrs ago....everything closed down.
i was self employed, so i walked 2 mile and spent days gutting an old house.
i well remember a black trail betwen the house and the skip in the snow.
btw..im 60 , and i remember a lot more than 2 other similar winters.
i remember picketing in the snow in one miners strike for starters.

| From a mate on another forum who controls the gritters
gritting the roads is a very expensive operation, and grit/salt is pointless noce you get more than a fow inches of snow. I don't know why some people seem to think it is some sort of magic fairy dust, it isn't. Once it has been put down it takes time to work, following a gritter up the road won't make an ounce of difference to whether or not you're going to make it up that hill. But driving over it and workign it into the snow/ice will get it doing its job for the people coming up the road later on. In fact, one of the ways I can see what time a road has been gritted here is by looking at the temperature readings of the road surface thermometer. The temperature drops sharply once salt is applied. Try it, get a jug of iced water and stick a thermometer in. pour in some salt and watch the thermometer, it will go down before it goes up.
I have to deal with stupid questions from stupid people, but unfortunately I can't be as honest with the truth as I'd like to be. here are some FAQ's and the honest answers.
"why hasn't my road been gritted?" I'll tell you why. It is because there are more important roads to grit than yours, the resources are best used on main roads, hospital approach routes, school routes, bus routes and so on. If you really insist on having your road done, we will gladly accept a donation for the cost of another vehicle (£100k will get yo a cheap one), contributions to drivers salary (HGV drivers) and charge you for the salt/grit, call it £60 a ton including delivery. We don't accept western union or paypal i'm afraid.
"I fell off my bike because you didn't grit the road" I'm not surprised, and you're an idiot thinking you can ride a bike on ice. next time you try doing something stupid can you ask someone to film it for me?
"the grit from the lorry hit my windscreen when it went past, can't they turn it off when cars are coming the other way?" No. because idiots like you will complain then that the roads have not been treated properly.
"can someone come round and put some grit on my path so i can get to the pavement frmo the front door". No, take responsibility for your own property and your own actions.
"i live opposite the council yard and haven't seen a single gritter go out all week, i'm not going to pay my council tax until you sort it out". you are either a liar, blind, don't know what a gritter looks like, or haven't been sat twitching the curtains while they have been going in and out of the yard.
"we're the local radio station, can we come and take photographs of the salt stock?" why? seriously, why? if you concentrated on your radio station you might actually be able to get some listeners, leave the stupid photo taking to the crappy local paper!!!
"we're the crappy local paper, can we come and take pictures of the salt and then tweak the image so that it looks like the pile isn't as big as it is and despite the fact there is actually enough there for almost 2 winters (approx 800 tons), and that if you need more salt you can get it in a few days, we will make it look like there are only 2 days supply left to try and shift papers". sure, fill your boots.
