| Quote ="DaveO"KFC has had new deals since his prime and presumably they have gone downwards in money terms. We also don't know when Roby's current contract was signed. Likewise we don't know what Diskin is on. Both Riddell and TL's comtracts are "new" and Riddell won't be here on peanuts and despite a probable reduction you don't sign players who can point to being a current World Cup winning international for peanuts either.
The thing is though the players involved in the positions of half back and hooker are Smith, TL, Tomkins, Riddell and McIllorum.
TL's new deal makes it increasingly likely IMO Smith will leave at the end of the season as he is the only one out of contract.
That would mean Riddell and McIllorum at hooker and TL at 7 with Tomkins at 6.
So regardless of whether or not we can afford Riddell and TL both as 9's it looks increasingly unlikely that is what will happen anyway IMO. And that is before we consider which of Riddell or TL would be happy as a back up hooker.
IMO the evidence points to TL having been signed as primarily a 7 and that is, if correct, IMO a mistake.
Dave'"
So what your saying is, We Don't know????
Maybe we should leave it to someone who does then, Like IL for example???

Dave, that's just a load of supposition, so why argue it? As I said, the liklihood is that neither of the top teams is paying peanuts for their hooking partnerships and neither should we. I'll bet you a pound to a penny we have a new half next season.

| IMO If we want to move forward and push for the challenge cup/grand final then I feel we need to keep players like Tommy at the club. Players that want to play for Wigan and not here just for the money but are here because they want to put Wigan RL right back up their with the best. Hes a fantastic player and one of the best players we have at wigan and at the age of 23 he can only get better.
Heres to a hopefully good future for us Tommy.

| Good news - if he plays at 9. Although you can't fault his effort, he simply isn't ggod enough, imho, to be our starting scrum half and if we want any chance of winning silverware in the next three years we need to sign a classy halfback to partner with Tomkins (as well as a prop)

Err.. because this is a message board and we all like discussing things Wigan RL related?
And of course you only ever deal in facts, never speculate and never offer an opinion.
I think what I said about Smith leaving and the probable line up as a result is quite a plausible scenario.
If you don't think it is, say why not but using the "that's just a load of supposition" is no argument at all.
I don't think anything I said in that post was implausible.
Here's anther bit of "speculation". Leeds and Saints can fit two experienced hookers under their salary cap because they have more to spend due to them using the image rights tax dodge. No idea if that is true at all but plenty of people on here think Leeds and Saints have superior squads to ours because they DO use the image rights tax dodge.
Would you be prepared to speculate that is a contributing factor as to why they can fit two quality hookers under the cap. Or do you think there is nothing to be gained form the image rights stuff?

Dave is not right though, because by your definition all he offered was ifs and buts as well.
Sorry, I hate using the eye-rolling icon - it's so pompous. But while you used it for others, I thought it only fair to use it for you. After all, you deserved it at least as much as they did.

As for the Roberts one it's not looking the best piece of business is it?!! Richards is solid at fullback but better on the wing and Ainscough looks a great long term bet.
Roberts hasn't been bad i suppose but you can't help feel the money would have been better spent on an out and out fullback if it were a back or more importantly a prop forward of real class.'"

They can't be justified on the strength of his time at Wigan thus far, but they can be on the strength of his NRL career, which was pretty impressive. He's not that old either.
I think we should be patient with Mark Riddell. There's every chance he'll come good for us.

The fact of him saying he will come good and will be a good signing.....because og his career in Aus. You forgot the first part to meet your aguments needs.
If that was the case in the past Roberts, Fielden, Gleeson, Smith and Piggy will destroy SL on their own.

So the ability a player has shown during his career should not be considered when a club contemplates signing him?
Sorry, but that's a joke. You'd never sign anyone.

| Whilst Riddell may not have hit the heights that some expected the plus side is that he is already better than Higham was.
When did Higham in his 3 years run 35 metres for a try for Wigan?
Riddells passing is infinitely better than Highams.Wigan are scoring more tries out wide now, is Riddells better distribution a factor? He is also conceding fewer penalties, which is another bonus.

Excellent points which can’t be ignored when discussing Riddell.
I mentioned on another thread about the range of passes he can give and the marked improvement he has in reading the game.
No doubt in my mind which is the better player

That is quite simply not the case. And by quite some margin.

You really do have to be very selective in your statistics otherwise you might have to admit you are wrong
Whether he is better than Higham isn't the issue. Riddell has been a major disappointment. I fail to see how anyone can conclude otherwise. Making a 35m run then having to have a rest for the remainder of the game isn't good enough.
Hopefully he will improve as we have him for another two seasons but after 11 games we really ought not to still be waiting.

It is the case tho. Riddell is twice the player Higham will ever be.
Higham always was and always will be a one trick pony who runs from DH. This may impress some people like Stevo but give me Riddell any day of the week as he possesses the ability to read the game and select the right man to pass to.
