It seems adapting to a teams game plan that knocks us off ours is something this team cant do..and i for one dont believe its because of lack of talent.

But why should negative play be rewarded.

The 40:20 was a great idea as it rewarded a GOOD kick. This is rewarding a poor kick.

Maybe the rule should be.Instead of the 20 metre tap it should be were the kick happened. unless its kicked less than the 20 metre line..then it can start from there.

But i'm not really against a team using a ruling in there favour to get the advantage.

Why not go the whole hog and introduce Flankers, Line Outs and begin excluding those less privellaged than ourselves and call our game Rugby Union?

That particular rule is fine as it is, IMO. If you're really smart, you'd drop you fullback wayyy back to return the ball. Perhaps on the try line, and have a halfback or a winger just 'bobbying' behind the line, say 10-15 metres to cover a crafty chip.

Clever tactics by McDermott, well executed by Orr and Randall, who in my opinion has the best rugby brain in the league - the manner in which he targeted Thorman and sent runners directly at him, forcing him to make four or five consecutive tackles, then putting in the kick behind him, turning him and that channel around was a breath of fresh air. All too often, I find myself screaming for teams to target a spot player in the opposition.

I don't see an issue with this. If it was that effective, every club would do it week in week out, but they don't. Plenty of clubs lookfor the bigger advantage which is keeping the ball in.

All Quins were doing was playing the percentages, but this tactic is less effective than having a good kick which ends up around the goal line. The downside to this though is that your defensive line has to work hard.

Th tactic can be used effectively, however a decent team would not then allow themselves to be penned in. In a set of 6, you should be making 50m. This then allows you to get a good kick in and you should be able to pen the opposition in their own 10. It is up to you to stop these tactics being effective, and Hull were simply icompetent tonight.

The game in the UK baring a few games per season is getting boring.

the 40/20 was and is a poor rule, you say it's a reward for a good kick, yet the great defence that kept the team in their oponents 20 might as well not have bothered, poor ruling.

And yet people to try to tell me the standard of super league gets better each year

The 'level playing field' that the salary cap has brought into the game has made the game worse on quality.

It's shocking how poor the standard of RL is these days. The world cup was a wake-up call for some but some people still need waking.

The worst comment EVER I have heard on Sky Sports was Eddie saying something like:


"Look at the table, everyone is neck and neck THE SALARY CAP IS DOING IT'S JOB"


1. The original reason the CC was brought it was to stop clubs bankrupting themselves, nothing to do with "fairness".

2. If you are so concerned with a "level playing field" go and watch amateur RL- the way things are going it won't be long before there isn't much difference in the relative standards anyway.

It can be absoloute dross at times. The amount of players who can't pass both ways, can't effectively make a tackle, can't read a play, can't find their Iestyn Harris from their elbow is shocking.

Amen brother! I used to prefer superleague to the boring NRL. Now its the other way round, I cant be bothered to watch superleague as much as I used to and love the NRL.

SL and it's stupid rule changes as well as the SC and playing in the summer, has ruined this once fine sport

I've been saying this for years. The biggest change for me has come as a result of the 10 metre rule. Teams used to have to stand deep, and had to have proper half backs capable of opening up a defence, ala Andy Greg. Now teams stand flat and rely on quick the balls and offloads to make a break.


The game has changed for the worse. Teams are so fit now, and with 12 interchanges it's more like American football. As soon as a player looks tired he comes off, you can't target players and exploit the gaps anymore.

Wingers aren't wingers anymore, there's not one person now who knows how to stand a player up and have the confidence to use the touchline like you'd see from most wingers 20 years ago. Wingers now are expected to look good scooting from dummy half, and being good in the air when the ball is kicked to the corner 4000 times a game.

I still love the game, but I don't think the skill level is anywhere near what it was 20 years ago. It's more fitness and possession now, and kicks are to much a part of the game now. Wingers are used to scoot from dummy half, then it's a series of attempted quick play the balls with a few offloads in an attempt to get into the opponents 22, then it's inevitably a kick to the corner. That isn't entertaining rugby, it's like watching union, and unfortunately it's the only thing Noble has coached our team since he's been here.

I agree with the point your making and all praise to McDermott for realising this.
I was crying out on Friday night (as the people next to me) for Wigan to kick over the full-back because it doesn't matter if it goes dead, especially in bad conditions.
The rules do need to change but as they stand coaches shoulod take advantage. For coaches read Brian Noble.
I can't believe what some coaches miss.
Years ago I went to Halifax and remarked that since the pitch was short, Farrell should be careful with the kick-off. What did he do? Kick it dead.
I watched Widnes play at Halifax a week ago and was thinking about this. What did Widnes do. Kick it dead! Amazing.

Got to agree. Better for players and better for fans.
