The whole point of losing a man in any sport is to give the opposition an advantage and the opportunity to score more points against you. Who knew so many sport's governing bodies had it wrong this whole time?!



I'd send your idea to the RFL if I were you. Tell them that instead of having a player sent off, you should be forced to bring a 14th man on as your opponents will rally when they're a man down, giving them a clear advantage over you...

Just remind me how many tries were scored when you had 13 men on the field on Friday night and how many were scored when you had 12?

One try conceded in 70 minutes with 13, one in the 10 minutes with 12 on. That doesn't help your case, I'm afraid.

I might also add the Saints game, when their only two tries were scored when we were down to 12.

As seen in the cup game 1 try can often be enough!! It got you back level and could have got you the roll on you needed to win the game. It was just credit to our players they dug in!!

And the flip side is how many tries did we score when down to 12 and how many when we had 13??

Which is my point that the players tend to dig in more and work that 10% harder when a man down.

Although, i'd rather focus on keeping the team with 13 down to as little points as possible rather than to keep on scoring. Just how i'd like it to be, if i were a coach (Thankfully i'm not)

I would sooner play 12 men than 13!! I would also sooner play with 13 for 80 than 70!!

I think the point is that a team can become complacent or be seen to be going through the motions with a full contingent on the field but when they lose a man they are forced to give that extra 10% to make up for having a man less! This can give the impression that a team is playing better as a result! It doesn't advantage a team to have a man sent off of course not that would be ridiculous but it doesn't necessarily mean a team becomes a walk over as a result and there have been cases where a team has become more galvanised after having a man sent off and sometimes have outscored their opponents. For example it happens all the time in Ice Hockey where a team scores what they call a "Short hand goal". The thing is though trying that bit harder is one thing but actually stopping a team is another. By rights any team with more players will dominate the other but this isn't 100% always the case!

When we played Catalan away, after Coley got sent off they scored at least 2 of their 3 tries, maybe all 3 - because we were short of men on the wings due to losing Coley from the middle.

So much for rallying round eh?

Suprisingly, i can accept that my team got beat by a better side, they did on Friday and have been lucky to scrape some of the wins we have got this year due to us being rather poor - i.e Salford away.

Off the top of my head, Leeds beat Wigan in the Challenge Cup back in 1999. Barrie Mcdermott got sent off in the first half & Leeds rallied to win.

Since no actual harm was done he would not be charged with causing Grevious Bodily Harm.
