If IL can manage to get rid of Mathers and Fielden for Gleeson and Morley I will never doubt anything he does again

For Heaven's sake.

If he signed before 5pm Friday he was eligible to play v Barrow.

If he signed after 5pm Friday he would have to wait to the semi final (if we get there) before he could play for us in the cup.

Had he played in Wire's cup game he would have been cup tied and could not play for us at all in the cup this season.

Look, you were the one suggesting IL was playing his cards close to his chest saying we only had £20K to spend. Either you were making serious point or you were not.

That's up to them, I guess. But Mathers' main problem from what I could see was a wholesale lack of confidence - so much that it had become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Each game it was a case of 'which embarrassing weakness is Mathers going to show today'.

A fresh start somewhere else is the only possible antidote. But the lad does reportedly have a good attitude, which is something Smith will like.

Well that is something we can agree on. I also wish him all the best.

Mathers was a gamble worth taking because lets not forget we just lost Ashton to RU and had not got a specialist full back in the senior side.

It didn't work out but I don't think that was due to lack of effort on Mathers part.

Lets hope we are not writing the same thing about Pryce in 12 months time.

I'm not going to spend all day debating something that neither of us can possibly prove one way or the other.

You don't know what goes at Wigan re. finances. Neither do I, for that matter. So what's the point worrying about something we can never reach an authoritative conclusion about?

Either way, it doesn't seem to have hampered our recruitment on this occasion - which is surely the main thing.

My point is that, on a day when we've supposedly signed one of the top no. 3s in Britain (and managed to keep our promising own number 3 into the bargain), finding fault in how we've pulled it off - especially when no-one else, not even the usual trolls, can be bothered doing that - is being negative for negativity's sake. And that's my final thought on the matter.

Surely doing just that is what fuel's half the discussions on this board! Speculation on players salaries, how much we have to spend on the cap, how much we will have to spend if player x leaves etc are the meat of any thread on player signings.



I agree but don't you think it is interesting that a chairman who seemed to shy away from paying a transfer fee has just shelled out £100K? And are you not curious as to how we have fitted such a player under the cap when we only supposedly had £20K to spare? I am given what I have learned about how players salaries count on the cap. In theory that means Gleeson is on £1667 a month plus whatever Mathers was on!

For the record if we have managed to keep Goulding and sign Gleeson it is great business by IL and it is good to finally see that cash is available for transfers. Happy now?
