| Quote ="MadDogg"Getting a deja vu to last year right at the moment.
Lots of clubs announcing major signings whilst Wigan fans waited and waited with no news. As it turned out we didn't get the players we wanted.
This isn't really a knock at Lenagan, he did deliver with the Gleeson signing - I just hope he can deliver the goods for 2010.
This is around the time when you expect signings to be announced - this myth that Wigan wait till the end of the year isn't really true, it simply means that usually Wigan have missed out on the top off-contract players and are bringing in the dregs from the bottom of the barrell.
Oh and Bailey should leave without question. Great guy, great attitude but simply not worth his place.'"
Well he went to Australia half way through the 2008 season stating it was mainly a trip looking at top end signings for 2010 so we'll see if it beared fruit!
He always talked about 2010 being the season we'd be back on an even keel again in regards to the saalry cap and it being the season we could start signing top quality again so lets see if that happens.
I must admit i have my doubts.

No thanks. We have too much talent coming through in that position who have immense potential.
One thing I will say I'm glad the calibre of players we are looking at has gone up a bit. Carl Webb, Mark O'Meley, Willie Mason, Matt Orford compared to Ryan McGolderick, Darrell Griffin, Richard Moore etc

Looking and buying are two different things. I am quite partial to walking down past the shops in Bond street and looking at the lovely watches on display in many of the shop windows. Sadly, I am unable to purchase the watches.
Let us hope Wigan are not getting themselves into this situation.

I agree with that, Im starting to wonder how long how long it will be before we hear that 2011 is a year we will start to see positive squad movements in relation to the cap.
Bailey will almost certainly be leaving imo given the cap & quota limits we will face in the next couple of years, that and the depth of talent we have in the second row.
If Bailey stays, Mossop/Farrell will start to look elsewhere because Hansen will always get picked in front of them despite offering nothing all season.
I would hope when IL returns from Aus, he announces a signing, im sick of hearing about how he "would play Mason as a prop" or he "is looking for a frontline halfback and Orford fits that bracket"

Exactly.
Like I've said before Lenagan will be made to look pretty stupid if after continually mentioning all these top names in the press he doesn't actually close the deal on any of them.

To be fair to Lenagan he never made any promises on the 2009 season and admitted that we didn't have that much room under the salary cap.
On the other hand he's said since the day that he took over that we'd have alot more room to play with in 2010..................over to Mr Lenagan!

I think that why Bailey has to leave imo because we can't afford to be letting these lads go.
I'd let Pryce, Smith and Bailey leave without question and possibly Coley aswell dependant on who we can get in to replace him.
I'd bring Goulding back from Salford to act as back up in place of Pryce.
I'd also look at loaning one of O'Carroll/Prescott out for the season if we bring in another prop and keep Coley because we can't afford to let them sit in the reserves.

Id give Pryce another year and be more inclined to let Goulding leave - although there needs to be a review of Goulding/Pryce and see if either could replace Carmont with a view to him maybe leaving at the end of this season.
Prescott and O'Carroll - the weaker prop needs to be allowed to go on loan next year with the remaining one being our 4th choice prop behind Fielden, Feka & NEW PROP.
Coley needs to be released along with Smith & Bailey.
Phelps deserves a new deal and should stay.

Well it would be suicide to do so. Have yourself photographed with Carl Webb's agent, say your looking at Mason and Orford and end up with Darrell Griffin and Ryan McGolderick would send fans into a fury.

Again I don't believe we didn't have much room on the salary cap.
Are you telling me Riddell and Roberts aren't on six figure salarys? and that Ryles, Carvell or Buderus will be on a hefty figure more? Nah don't believe that we didn't have much room under the cap.
The Gleeson signing almost proves that Mathers will not have been earning a six figure sum at Wigan and neither will Goulding and are you telling me both of those wages will equal Gleesons?
I don't believe everything IL says.

Nor me but thats no bad thing.
I think he plays his cards close to his chest alot of the time whilst spinning the media a few lines.
Gleeson is a high profile, good signing but we need a couple more.
He's spoke about Mason, O'Meely and Orford in the Aussie press and going off past form that means it's unlikely we'll be signing them! He tends not to comment on the players we actually get so i think again we'll all be suprised when signings are announced.
I think it's his way off throwing other clubs off the scent but then again i can't have seen many clubs clambering to sign Mathers, Pryce, Riddell etc

It does surpise me that so many fans seem to feel they have a right to be kept informed 100% on every move the chairman is making.
Surely people accept that in a cattle-market like this there are deceptions and counter-deceptions? Surely they also accept that people are often misquoted in newspapers, and sometimes merely mention names because these names have been put to them by journalists who have read message boards like this where all kinds of ridiculous fantasies are aired?
I'd be more upset if our chairman - who already communicates more directly with the fans than any other chairman in SL (do any others post on fan sites?) - was so forthcoming that his every recruitment strategy was delivered to the press in full before he even embarked on it.

She said, "The only time we ever knew about a signing, was when the player had actually signed, it was always kept in-house until it was done & dusted"
IL is a successful businessman and will not reveal his hand until it is necessary, and that's how it should be. Let the fans speculate by all means as it's good fun, but the real world doesn't work like that.

Message boards like this have turned the rumour factory thing into a living, breathing entity. So many names are thrown around on these pages - many owing to nothing more than mischief or wishful thinking - and yet each one takes on a life of its own.
At one time, you had to go down to The Royal Oak or The Griffin to get the latest rumours. As a result, you had quality rather than quantity in those days.
Some of the stuff on here is truly scurrilous, and yet we blame the club when they don't come off. Okay that isn't the whole picture, but it accounts for a good percentage of it.

I would argue IL is showing his hand. He feeds the speculation of the fans by constantly dropping names of players he's interested in to the press, something that the vast majority of other clubs do not do.
He himself is responsible for raising fans' expectations so he should not be surprised when the same fans expect him to deliver the same standard of player he constantly talks about.

Wigan is one of the biggest rumour mills in the game. All kinds of names have been linked with us recently (and forever and a day) that bear no connection to reality. As far as I'm aware, IL has never mentioned Lockyer, Thurston, Cayless, Kite, Anasta, Fien, Price, Moi Moi, Hall etc.
As for the likes of Willie Mason, surely no-one in the right mind thinks that any SL club are going to sign him?
Didn't IL say something like "we're always interested in players of that quality"? It's hardly name-dropping. I'd agree that he has mentioned others that seem like more realistic targets - Webb, O'Meeley, Orford. But you're overstating the case hugely to say that he's building the fans' hopes up only to dash them, when, quite frankly, the fans have themselves been building some ridiculous over-expectations in this last month alone.
And to be honest, this kind of premature disappointment is a tad predictable. Two other clubs announce decent signings - Hall to Bradford and Long to Hull (Long, for Heaven's sake!), and all of sudden Wigan aren't delivering again. Why don't we just wait and see?

and soliola to saints
i think what madogg is getting at is the fact that for all the hopes of decent signings for last year we ended up with none (except gleeson mid-season) and the chairman is setting himself up for a fall by mentioning other players (whether he has said we are interested or not) and then failing to deliver the marquee signing we crave (although theres a long time for him to seal deals and announce them)

| Just look at Saints for a template of how to run a club. They had Potter lined up 12 months ago and already next season's big moves (Long out, Soliola in) are done and dusted. We, in comparison, appear to be hanging in the wind - again.
I want to know what's happening with our coach and out of contract players now. What more does IL need to see? Take Noble, for example. He's had 3 years at the club - am I seriously being asked to believe that his future depends upon our results for the rest of this season?

| Great point Jimmy, I think the results dependent must be a side step, you cant run a club from week to week its got to be year to year. I think Noble has to go, 12 points from 15 games is poor anyway you look at it.
