Tony Smith wants cover at full back thats why he wants Mathers
Monaghan wants to leave Wire so the one i was told about with Smith looks like that could be the one.
Maybe a small amount of cash as well frees up cap space for us and moves a quota spot out leaves us room for another oversea player. Was told Goulding wants out but from what i have heard he is going to a Yorkshire club but do not know which

Although i am not totally over the moon about the signing i still think it is a good one.

On the down side he does have bagage that is the major issue for me, on the plus side he can be a wonderful attacking centre one of the best in the UK and he is British, i think this is critical. In real terms we are not going to get a better British centre, which will enable us to have 1 more precious quota space available to use next year in an area we are more in need of.

At the moment touch wood off our current quota of overseas players we will be losing touch wood, Smith, Phelps Bailey maybe only needing to bring 1 in if we recruit Gleeson which can only be a positive move for the club in my opinion.

hes an idiot on the field and off it, we have enough of those at the club, he isnt the fastest, he is greedy, his defence is suspect, and he is a warrington cast off, if he was that good he would be pulling warrington out of the mire, but is he, NO!, he is crap, wouldnt have him any where near a wigan shirt, id sooner us go for keith senior one of the oldest in the world or put one of the other young kids in than this waste of space. I really dont see why we need another back and again we are signing someone who is living on rep and not on form. we have way too many backs to be even thinking about signing this guy, just another huge waste of money for me,

I think he was one of the only England players to come away with any credit in the World Cup, and if the deal goes through it looks like we will be losing 2 backs.

Whilst I would be happy to get a player of Gleesons ability in the side, I can't help thinking that we are looking at the wrong position. Surely we need to be looking at a prop forward first and foremost.

just seems like a massive waste of money for me, goulding is a young wigan trained kid, for me hes looking good, mathers is crap let him go, and phelps if we used him right would be good but just getting rid of players and signing someone isnt going to mask the fact we have a crap coach and he cant get the best out of our players, we will sign this lad who alot of you guys see at the saviour, and he will be usless not only for his own lack of ability and wanting to work hard but for the fact that noble is crap with tactics, we will get cut appart down the wing if gleeson and roberts are on the same wing, not a good signing at all, club going in wrong direction if we are signing him, let him bugger off to aus and keep the faith in the kids, like thornley and farrell etc dont go signing half harted crap players cos they are british, we got our own trained british kids

Gleeson is on 150K

Mathers and Goulding are on around 60K each which I think is the average rugby league wage.

120k plus the 30K we have left over means we can fit him in.

its just seems like the club is trying to paper over the cracks, and sign a british player because thats what the rugby world want us to, and a new player because its what the fans want, jsut to try and keep the fans interested. i want a new coach first, i think we got the players to push on, i dont think its the players fault, but the coach is what me need to change

I agree. As has already been said in this thread, he's one of only a handful of English players who came away from the world cup with any credit.

We badly need a right centre and a Prop, we may not be able to sign a Prop of the right quality at the moment, we have no quota space to sign one or any other position for that matter from overseas.

If we sign Gleeson we may very well kill 2 birds with one stone if it means we lose 1 of either Phelps or Smith.

We improve our position in the centres considerably and also open a quota spot should a Prop become available from the NRL mid season, it seems like very good business to me if i am honest.

We are rumored to be signing. As the moment Goulding going in the other direction got mentioned we get the usual hes young player, homegrown.

Goulding is average at best. He will never play for England or GB. Gleeson is a lot better than him. Its the fact that a homegrown player going in the other direcction that is the problem.

Tomkins and Ainscough have shown more in a few games than Goulding has in 2 seasons.

There are so many things wrong with that statement it's unbelievable. To ignore Martin Gleeson's contribution to super league and England is plain stupid.

I too have reservations about this potential signing, especially if it involves exchanging Goulding. But just to rant on and on about Gleeson not being good enough, being a crap defender, uninterested, etc, is making a case that is simply not borne out by the facts.

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but very few, I'd imagine, who watch the British game regularly will share it. In fact, this notion of "he's not good enough for Wigan" - when you're talking about a regular Great Britain centre, who is only 28, and is still head and shoulders above most other British centres - is painfully representative of an attitude that has bedevilled the Wigan fans and subsequently the entire club for years now. We really need to get out of this state of mind created in the 1990s, wherein nothing less than the best in the world will do for us. That ambition will never be realised in the age of the salary cap.

To fit a player of Martin Gleeson's calibre (and presumably, cost) into what's already a healthy-sized SL squad, would be a remarkable feat of manoueviring by the club's bosses.

That said, I reiterate that I'd consider losing Goulding permanently a steep price to pay (though not necessarily TOO steep - some of us have clearly been lulled into believing that signing 'young British' is more important than signing 'quality').

As for the bit about the coach, I don't think you'll get too many arguments about that. But buying in a new international centre - when we've currently only got one real centre at the club - is not likely to prevent us replacing Noble when the time arrives.

I can't believe that anybody is questioning Gleeson's ability. He has had (and may still have, I don't know) issues and clearly isn't happy at Wire but on his day, he's right up there.

I had the opportunity in Oz to discuss the World Cup with several current NRL coaches and they all spoke highly of just two England players - Gleeson and Ellis. They're not necessarily right of course but a pattern emerges.....
