| Unfortunately, this event was one of several around that time which really put our players in the shop window for the Union big money boys. Up until then, they genuinely didn't rate us. I went to watch Wigan v Bath at Maine Road with an RU man, who, even though he was from the NW, seriously thought that Bath would win easily. I almost felt sorry for him afterwards, he as so shellshocked (even though he must have been the only northerner there who was). That pity ran out a couple of years later, when they started making plans to sign all our best players.

| It'll be good to see how the Joining Jack all-stars team get on in this years Dubai 7's. Paul Sculthorpe, Martin Offiah, Jason Robinson, etc will still have a lot of class!

Imagine how embarrassing for the union boys if a bunch of retired leaguies, with an average age of 40+ go and win it, or come close to winning it.
...and with that line up its not beyond the realms of possibility!....would be seriously hilarious and so hope it happens!

| Shoot me down...but I'm often an "anybody but Wigan supporter" but that weekend of the middlesex 7's there was only one team I wanted to win! Is it my old age and memory but I seem to recall watching it on terrestial TV...loved it!

| I'm surprised the thread hasn't been locked as it was a Rugby Union tournament, especially as Wigan had the likes of Martin Offiah, Scott Quinnell, Va'aiga Tuigamala in their squad.

It's talking about a game/tournament Wigan RL played in. Last time I looked this was a Wigan RL forum, certainly not a Harlequins RU or Biarritz RU one.

| I was there that day as a London born and bred Union supporter who had never really seen League. It was a day I'll always remember and the event that first unlocked my interest in League - I found it unexpectedly emotional to see the Wigan team and fans at Twickenham on a beautiful sunny day, and I was blown away by the skill and speed of the team - Henry Paul's white boots were just an amazing blur - and am I right in remembering Offiah going over the try line and not scoring, but going back intothe field of play, running around a defender and then going back to the try line to score? Years later I've moved away from London and I'm afraid I'm actually a Wire fan but have always had a soft spot for Wigan from the memories of that day. But I can see why it might be looked on as a bittersweet experience in retrospect, which is sad.

I would expect the League team to get hammered.
Sevens has quite a high profile, and has evolved into almost a different sport. Tbh 99% of RU players wouldn't be fit enough to play it.
Of course I hope the League team will hammer the opposition, but I have to be realistic.

i haven't seen which day the joining jack team is joining in but i am very sure it wont be the international days as these count as points for the 7s cercuit tournement, so i am GUESSING it will be of the first 2 days which is full of local teams in the emirates and a few teams who fly in for the event.
will they win all depends on what there fitness is like, one major disadvantage is the local teams live here and play in this heat which could stop some of the retired players in mins and obviously one major advantage is some of the players where the best in a generation players.
anyway i didn't even know until i read on here they was coming, if any one has any contact details for the organisers of the team could you send them to me as i maybe able to help with a few things. also i will be attending the 7's and will keep people up to date if they like but i have no idea how to use the twitter box like bilko does.

Ask one of the local Sheiks to fly Bilko over free of charge so he can do the twittering for you.

If you would care to re-open the thread I'll change the title.

| Wonder if they would throw us an invite to have an RL select team.
Tomkins and Ratchford are quick and elusive, Atkins strong and fast, Hock and Carvell both quick forwards, LMS so we have someone posh sounding in the team, Lomax, we'd have some devastating runners that are skilled as well, i reckon we'd tear them apart.

Given that the title was Harlequins v Biarritz
and the opening post was:
Quote Watching it now on Sky Sports .
Ben Botica has just come on and kicked a goal for Quins, he also looks pretty decent with ball in hand.'"
There's no need to reopen it as there's a perfectly good RU thread on the Other Sports board. As has already been said this is a specific thread discussing Wigan RL - or it was until you derailed it about something else, so please get back on-topic, thank you.

I reckon you're wrong. Things have changed since Wigan did a number on the Rah Rahs in the 90s. These days 7s is so specialised it's virtually a 3rd code. Our RL select team would be up against specialists if it played at the top level. I wouldn't give them much hope for that reason. Even standard RU players are no longer the lumbering accountants and solicitors they were in the 90s.

| A few gloating posters on here have also forgotten/fail to mention that squad had Martin Offiah, Scott Quinnell, Va'aiga Tuigamala and Shem Tatupu were all experienced union players (one wales captain and the other an all black!) before chasing the money to league and of course we must not forget at the time a young Henry Paul, Jason Robinson and Kris Radlinski were all going playing RU in the off season around then.
An impressive feat yes but by no means the trouncing some on here imply. As the previous poster pointed out it certainly wouldn't happen today, RU has 15yr of professionalism under its belt and even professional 7's players!
was 1 hell of a laugh though!
