I've never been quite sure where this particular story came from. I certainly remember no such official quote from IL - but that wouldn't be unusual because there's so much mythologising goes on on these forums. Others, for example, maintain - usually very indignantly - that IL said he would never pay ANY transfer fee for a player.

He may have said something along these lines that I missed, but I wouldn't have thought it politic to make such a statement, which suggests to me that he didn't.

On the other hand if he did, and he's been caught - shock, horror! - lying again, then that will give the anti-IL brigade something else to complain about.

I think it was at the last Fans Forum, he said he'd offered £75,000 for Carvell (?) and that was as high as he was going to go.

i always thought it never made sense. This is a great bit of business for all concerned. You get a british world class centre and warrington get the money and a player who once played very well under TS so why not again?

He did say they had offered Carvell 75k but that was in wages and he wouldn't get drawn into a Bidding War.

Still not an official anouncement by a club though. Hopefully it will happen ASAP.

I have never heard the story that set a figure on how much he would be prepared to pay in transfer fees either.

My view though is IL himself won't pay a penny. He wants the club to be self financing including transfer fees in my opinion.

If I am wrong and he "does a DW", dips into his pocket and pays a fee then great but there seem to have been not unreasonable fees asked for players such as Carvell where he has backed off so at the moment I don't think anyone can say one way or the other just what IL's policy is on transfer fees.



If Wigan get Gleeson and keep Goulding then great. However I think the notion " the chairman played his cards close to his chest about how much money he had available " is a bit naive. If he has said we had £20K on the cap available yet we really had much more, no one will believe him again. So what is the point?

As an aside you should read the Wire board. As Jukesays pointed out to me there is someone on there who knows the salary cap rules and if we sign Gleeson on say £150K a year then this season despite being a way into it, the full £150K will count on our cap. Those are the rules.

Given we only had supposedly only £20K to spare if we get Gleeson under the cap it is a minor miracle by IL.

I recall he was on a contract with sh[iit[/ie money in year one but loaded to years 2 and 3. If there's little difference between his and Gleesons contracts it really is sterling business.

Not when you consider that Mathers was supposedly going to be on a lot more money in his second season if he proved himself in his first. Or that someone else - probably Goulding - will shortly be going out on loan.

But that aside, you and I are going to have to agree to disagree about the heinousness of the 'lie' Ian Lenagan told re. the £20 grand on the cap. Maybe I am being naive thinking this was part of some clever scheme, but I think you're being even more naive thinking anyone else will care - particularly the agents of players and the chairmen of other clubs, who are almost always economical with the truth when it suits them. It's part of the wheeling and dealing, isn't it. Mo was a past master.

Seriously, on a day when what basically seems to have happened is that Wigan have signed the best British centre in the game, you seem to be looking very hard for something to complain about.

If Goulding + Mathers wages = Gleesons contract with us I am not sure if IL is genius or idiot. Work that one out.



I don't understand your point. I can never recall Mo saying we only had £xx to spend on players. Some would cynically say that is because he had no clue how to manage the cap but my view is the best way keep your cards close to your chest is to say nothing, not lie.

If you mean no one in the profession (such as agents) believed IL anyway, then who was he trying to kid and what for?
