| Quote ="Aboveusonlypie"I think that only Wigan and Hull actually paid a Marquee player last season, and though neither turned out to be a success the other ten clubs weren't affected. So I don't understand your point. The presence of a Marquee Player rule gives clubs a way around the Salary Cap, which most clubs haven't been able to apply.
Because of the poor exchange rate on the pound and the poor quality of Super League, getting players to come and play here is proving hard. We only get players who are having disciplinary problems who can't get a gig in the NRL at the time. The fact that Koucash agitated for the Marquee rule then couldn't apply it proves that the Salary Cap isn't the issue really.
There are probably ways of getting Sam Tomkins salary under the cap were we to need the money to pay George Williams for example.'"

| As with most debates there are fans on here that take one side and visa versa, this is good. I understand that Solomona has the right to earn more money if presented with the opportunity but 'come on' how can any supporter of any club whatever sport criticise a club for making a rugby based decision. Cas have in the past sold players to stay in business and not take the option of screwing everybody by going into administration - (Clarke) for example.
It was clear from day one what was happening here but because of how it is playing out now, a player being persuaded to retire from the game for money effects every RL club, both in SL and NRL. Every club needs to stand up and lend their support to the RFL to fight this for the good of the game.

This isn't the same though. What Solomona has done would be like going from a phone to a walkie-talkie. What you have put here would be like going from club to club not one sport to another.

| If he has two years left on his contract and say he gets paid £100,000 each year then presumably he would have to pay them £200,000 to buy out the rest of his contract (or Sale do it for him) in order to leave Cas. In most employment contracts you need to give a period of notice and there may be other conditions attached. However, this is were a lot of clubs who are run on fine margins have problems. If for example, he was due a bonus and it wasn't paid on time, then he can get out of the contract. It might be that his lawyer has looked over his contract and feels that he can get out of it easily.
It does seem odd that Sale don't just offer to buy out his contract. Because you would think that if that happened Cas are on to a loser. They can't keep an unhappy player who is being offered say three times his current salary to play another sport.
I wonder how legally binding most of these contracts are anyway. Take the case of Kevin Larroyer at Hull KR. It seems wrong that they can unilaterally cancel a two year contract because they get relegated.

I get the point. Difference is, this isn't phones. When Jarryd Hayne left Parramatta to go play NFL did San Francisco pay Parramatta anything?

Sonny Bill Williams when he left Bulldogs?
Im sure Was can hold his registration and then if he comes back to League whoever signs him will be liable. Just like how Roosters had to pay Bulldogs to sign SBW.

Reminds me of when Tuigamala went back to Union from us, we were never going to have the funds to keep him. Imports don't bother me so much, more so when it's young lads through our development and have been lured away (Sam, Joe Burgess, Charnley, rumours on Williams.....etc).'"
Tuigamala didn't want to leave and was quite happy at Wigan. The club got a silly offer for him and due to the financial situation the club found itself in at the time cashed in. Had the club not been in trouble I doubt they would have sold.

It will be a term of his contract that it can be cancelled if the club is relegated because of the stupid RFL rule that says players from relegated clubs become free agents. It's one of several reasons why P&R is financially such a disaster. This has nothing to do with how binding a contract is (or isn't).

It is not as simple as that. The courts may well take the view his retirement is nothing more than a ruse to break his contract and/or that Sale induced or advised him him to "retire" that in order to break his contract. Courts interpret the law and don't just apply it in as black and white a manner as you suggest.
The Tony Pulis case has also shown contracts are enforceable (he has been deemed to have broken his by leaving Palace when he did so is not eligible for a £2m bonus and must pay it back).
It's not in Sales's interests to weaken contacts in general anyway. It may seem as they are the ones to benefit if this ruse works but if Josh or Solomona decide they don't like RU Sale would soon whinge if they "retired" from RU leaving them high and dry.

It's Wigan's fault that Solomona has "retired" and is going to Sale. The VT has just reached peak anti-Wigan bollox.

I think that came as something of a shock to the player concerned. Hull KR found themselves in a right pickle. I don't think they ever considered relegation right until the 79th minute against Salford. The chairman castigated Walker for getting a move to Saints (I know there were other rather unsavoury considerations, which I won't go into here), lauded Lunt for re-signing quickly whilst casting Larroyer adrift.
I agree that P&R is potentially a financial disaster. It needs to be managed better. I understand that was part of Jamie Peacocks job description.
I know you have been against P&R in the past. How do you feel about Leigh gaining promotion now? It seems to me that their ambition has been rewarded finally, as it should be. Super League shouldn't be a closed shop IMO.

| Sale have well a truly lost a paying customer over this. I pointed out on twitter that as a fan I was disappointed in the way the club has gone about his.
Blocked by the club, blocked by the head of media, blocked by Solomona, blocked by Charnley.
Charnley is the most disappointing as he outwardly said he was trying to wind up Rugby League fans on his twitter. I said it was a poor do if you go out to wind up the people who pay their hard earned money to support him and his his sport. Blocked for telling a guy that fans matter to sportsmen.
All in all, I am retiring from Sale Sharks (along with the rest of my family). I wonder if I get my money for tickets back? Very much doubt it, but I am free to sign with another club now.

Fair play to you and I wish more Sale fans were as morally sound as you, but I'm afraid you're very much a minority. And to be honest if Wigan pulled a similar stunt to this (I'm sure we have at some point) I'd probably get over it pretty quickly; how do you get people to care about things like this that have no care for Rugby League?
As for Charnley I'm not surprised as his loyalties are with Union and Sale now so he's not exactly going to be calling them out publicly is he?

Lol Wigan always seem to get it. Although a little digging around at Company's House shows that the Sports Management Company behind all this (i.e. Outside Sport/Andy Clarke) also has a director called Phil Clarke. So we may need to pay attention to all those players getting extra praise on Sky next year because they may all literally be Phil Clarke's boys. Very murky indeed.

I think Charnley should have enough sense to just keep out of it. He played out his contract and moved as a free agent. He also left with a lot of respect for the way he finished his time at the club so he should have kept his head down IMO.
The actions of Solomona, Sale and his agent in all this are dispicable and Charnley doesn't need to drag his own name through the mud.
