| I'll get shot down for this but its an alternative view that's all !, but Pat will need to show he can re-create last seasons form after such an injury which is known to be very difficult to fully recover from, so would it be the decision of the Medical staff to tell IL, look this isnt going to work and time to cash in especially if someone is prepared to offer big bucks

Richards is out of contract at the end of this season, so there would be no big bucks to Wigan, apart from saving on his contract salary.
I do agree with what you say, in that Wigan need to be very careful and be sure that Richards is fully fit. It may sound a tad harsh, but it's a professional sport.

I wouldn't put it past him. I'm sure they'd offer more money than we'd be willing to.

| It is a game that I dont think Richards would enjoy personally. Too much kicking and not enough running/scoring for him.

| Anyone who has the programme for the Hull game should re-read the comments of IL on how there is nothing to worry about in terms of players leaving to go to RU. It looks even more complacent and short-termist after this than it did a couple of weeks ago. IL has been great for the club but his lack of vision for the game as a whole is sadly typical of RL club owners and administrators.
The sun is shining today in South Yorkshire as I type this but the outlook for RL is gloomy.

RU in the North of England is not going particularly well. Sale have a millstone around their neck in Edgeley Park and their owner isn't putting quite so much money in, their gates aren't that good. Leeds are going down again and Newcastle are second bottom with a star signing for next season of Ricky Sheriffe. They had to sell the ground to Northumbria University a couple of years ago to survive. Should Wigan be frightened if Sale take Richards for next season? No, it's short term thinking by Sale, they'll be signing a 30 year old who will take time to adapt to the game.
Sale must be green with envy at the crowd that will turn up on Friday. They are spending a fortune to try to fill the Reebok for 1 game in April with lots of cut price offers.

They seem to think its their God given right to take players or staff from Wigan or any other RL club. If RU is so good then how come they can't bring their youth players through instead of trying to sign Richards.
If I was a youth winger at Sale I'd be bitterly disappointed in the lack of faith shown in me by the club.
And speaking from a football fan's point of view, what's happened to Stockport County since Sale moved into their ground is a disgrace. They've gone from a steady League One/League Two club to looking down the barrel of Non-League.
For those reasons I would not lose much sleep if Sale got a poor attendance at Bolton and then eventually got relegated from the Aviva Premiership.

My thoughts exactly, what does seem apparent is that a number of fans want fans favourites around for ever but the time comes when we have to consider what is best for the team and the continued success of the club and if that means allowing players to leave who arent able to meet the standards being set by the current regime then unfortunately they must be let go.
As long as we avoid the David Vaeliki situation as he had the same injury and was quite clearly not able to perform at levels he had shown back in Aus and Uncle Mo didnt recognise this and was ripped off IMO
Be thankful Pat isn't a greyhound he'd be put down.

good post, when we signed DV he was classed as the best centre in the world and then got the same injury as Pat, look how he turned out.

| Exactly - Hopefully Pat will recover fully and be back to the player he was and sign a new contract - after all stability is a big faxtor is coninuing success. But, good though Pat undoubtedly is it is not as though he is a player we would miss hugely, a goal kicking winger ..... Charnley seemed to fit that bill pretty well against Hudds.
Whichever way things pan out the team/club will manage.

| There doesn't seem to be much point in Pat going to Sale RU for one simple reason: he's an Aussie. He'd get far more recognition going to play in the NRL when his Wigan career is over than playing club RU in England.
Both Ashton and Eastmond went for the glamour of playing for England RU, something not afforded to Pat.

Have you ever heard of a bloke called Brian O'Driscoll? He does OK in the profile stakes for Ireland.
Pat would make a good union wing IMO - quick, good finisher, great boot, very solid.

| I wish these union clubs would fook off personally every week theres a different story personally i think the game is a joke and stevo hit the nail on the head by saying the crowd touch the ball more than some players. Id offer pat a 2 yr deal with the option of 2 years if he doesnt come back as strong which i think he will we could put him at full back.
On the gleeson to salford rumour i hope we get nero in return he is a good player or a few quid.

If theres any truth in it then theres some sense here.
If theres truth then maybe its because Wigan have decided that he has little to no chance of regaining his former quality and want to offload early pulling a fast one on Sale for the way they have taken our youngsters in the past.
The chances of this are very slim though as I doubt they can tell until he plays. Also this story has now been printed in the Sun and therefore what little validity it had has now been completely erased.
And my final thought the whole "getting match experience in first team in union over u20s" is rubbish because Union is much more dangerous with the way they stamp and dive onto the ruck etc.
Also just found this which was linked to in another thread:
www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/ma ... -st-helens
"There is no chance of Richards making his comeback in rugby union with Sale, as had been reported, but a Sharks spokesman confirmed that they would be interested in signing him on a permanent basis if he fails to agree a new deal with Wigan beyond the end of this season."

| I received the following pm from Mick Hogan this morning:
[iThe story which has caused this original thread is utter rubbish. It is written by a man known for basing his stories on rumour and gossip and the fact he has acted on a text message says it all really. Its actually quite incredible to think that a player (as good as Pat is) without any RU experience could come over and use Aviva Premiership games to gain fitness in order to get back into RL is ludicrous. Dont get me wrong I think Pat could well be a big success in RU but not sure that would ever happen as he is such a legend now at Wigan Warriors.[/i
That sounds pretty cut and dried to me. It's clearly a load of nonsense, though obviously a player like Pat would be of interest to anyone who was looking to recruit. I guess it's down to us to keep him happy at Wigan.
On this subject, I owe Mick a bit of an apology. I made some rather uncalled for (and uninformed) comments about him earlier on in this thread, and I now take them back.
I think it's good of him to send the above info. That should put this whole thing to bed.
