| The fans who I fear we going to start losing are the young kids, i.e. the next generation of supporters.
My boy who went non stop for about 3 years, started to lose interest a couple of years ago - the final straw for him was sitting at the JJB in the freezing cold watching us get beat by Hull KR.
He has since attended only a couple of matches and on both occasions the standard of fare on offer and the poor atmophere has not aroused his interest. He is now at the point were he doesn't want to go to matches despite him having a season ticket.
I am not at the point where I think he is lost from the game forever but on the other side the product on the pitch is going to have to improve to get him back any time soon.

A good post. My nephew is 16 and he and his friend said they would not go again, saying it was c***.
We can't get relegated so let's embrace summer rugby and play a more expansive game.

| But IMO it's not all about "expansive rugby" It's about making the correct decisions with the ball at the right time in proper field positions, and that is something we've been poor at.
Sometimes five drives and kick are the right options.
I've picked out Goulding on another thread for making three bad decisions with ball in hand on Friday, but if it had been the Wakefield game I could have said the same about George Carmont and probably others.
Gareth Hock does it time and time again. I'm not saying get rid, but they, and many of the others need to know when to pass and when to stick hold.
You may call it expansive rugby I prefer sensible rugby.

I think it is a case of when the system we play wins then people dont get so down on it and the team/coach. An example would be Leeds away last April, we played basic disciplined Rugby but got a win in what was a another classic match between us and Leeds.
But when we lose then people pick up on the fact that we have played a less glamorous style of rugby than other teams play.
Personally I would like to see us play a bit more expansive but first and foremost I want to see us play clever by not dropping the ball, choosing good options and not getting pulled all over the place by teams in the 2nd phase. But above all at the moment we need to get a couple of wins then start to think about how we are playing.
As long as we win tomorrow night I am not too concerned if it is ugly, we need a platform to build on from.

on the other side of the coin are my kids who have watched since i introduced them to the game at central park. Still only teenagers they (3) and their mates have season tickets and are intending going every single game (bar catalan..cant afford) . they all have part time jobs, in some cases 2 jobs, as well as college, to fund their away days.
thats the future, and it looks rosy.
i dont think form will greatly affect a casual newby, as i think they will be more put off by the stagnant rugby we are playing at the mo. If they see good games they will be bitten by the rugby bug no matter what the results.
the ones who it will affect imo are the older fans who have been spoiled by our past success and who have grown old watching flowing entertaining rugby.
these fans are the ones who are now thinking twice about sitting in the cold, suffering 2 days of pain from their athritic joints after matches, .....they are the ones beginning to think "Is it worth the pain and effort to watch my team play awful rugby, get beaten by so called no hopers, when i can sit by the fire with my memories of yesteryear?"
if we start to lose the younger fans.......then its a slippery slope we are on

| well IMO the cost is an issue to what were being served up. it cost me 46 quid for tickets + another 20or so for drinks for me and my 2 kids.
in total around 70 quid to watch that shower perform like they could not be bothered. im a loyal fan to the core. but my patients is being stretched to the limit.

But we have no variety. Of course 5 drives and a kick are needed sometimes but the opposition can read us like a book. We need dummy runners, switches in play, a variety of kicks and to give the wingerws a chance.
As I have previously posted, we lost most of our ball against Wakefield when we were driving it in and a number of opponents made the tackle. Everyone on the ground knew that Coley was going to tap that free kick on the line and unfortunately so did about 5 Wakefield players and he naturally lost it. I remember Carmont running into touch but We didn't lose it by passing it wide. Of course we threw it on the ground but it was recovered. If I was a coach, I'd watch other teams, copy their best moves and put them into practice.
Our best (only) move is the diagonal kick. We never have a move from a scrum.
Still...it gives us something to talk about...roll on Friday.

And No matter what has happened in the last 3/4 years and in the next 3/4 years, nothing will ever compare to what we dished out!
Real World Class stars, winning consistantly (Without saying it was 1 game too far ) taking on the Aussies at club level, international level and in their own backyard and kicking ass without feeling "Homesick! "!
Then again, weve only got ourselves to blame for dragging down the standard of British RL just so we can call it competitive!

Do you not remember the "agent Millward" era, we were far worse, could not buy a win.
Far gods sake we have only played two games.

Think that is the key, and also my main reason for concern as we simply have no other options than a 1 up drive redardless of where we are on the field. Our main attacking threat is the kick to the corner, it does not seem that in our game plan we have any other intention of trying to score in any other way, it seems getting in field position and a kick to the corner is our only option, but given we are so transparent in our quest for field position our chances to do this are few and far between.

Fair enough, you aren't a bad supporter have a right too, but in my opinion you're:
Quote fickle
–adjective 1. likely to change, esp. due to caprice, irresolution, or instability; casually changeable: fickle weather.
2. not constant or loyal in affections: a fickle lover.'"

| I have a season ticket so will be attending. Not sure how I'd feel if I didn't have one to be honest. I've done the fanatical supporter bit. Hull KR on a Tuesday night in December kind of thing and never missed a game all season. I was sat there against Wakefield the other week and after about an hour I just thought to myself 'I'd rather be at home'. It wasn't that we were losing. It was just mind numbingly boring stuff on display. Someone else has touched on the point about the credit crunch & hard earned cash etc. Why would you want to pay to watch that crapola to be fair?
Anyway, I've had a God awful week at work so I can only hope that Noble has drilled the troops to play attractive, fast flowing, open rugby tonight to make up for it. The working man deserves entertainment.

Well said.
The days of Millward were about as grim as it can ever get for any Wigan fan. Every week we just knew we would get beat and most of the time we did and by some as well.
To give up after just two games, especially when the Hull game was a huge improvement is a bit strange to say the least

| Only just over 12000 fans tonight as I expected. Must do better.
Actually I quite enjoyed it because of Ainscough's inclusion and his brilliant performance. I hope he has paved the way for Sam to get a game because Smith isn't Wigan's standard. Neither is Riddel.
