| IIRC wasn't Leatherbarrow the scrum half in the friendly at Warrington where we played in the Pink & Black charity kit? Thought he had a fairly poor game, surely there's better already in the Wigan system.

He did have a poor game that day, but was a very classy player as a youngster, not seen anything of him for a while though

| Anyone heard anything in regards to us appointing a new Chief Exec?
Mick's been gone a fair while now and I'd have thought Lenegan would want the position filling well ahead of the new season.

| I played with Scott through high school at Deanery, he only started playing in Y7 and is a naturally gifted rugby player. I always wondered why Wigan didn't give him a deal at a younger age, maybe he chose wire? I have no idea. He is pretty cocky and very ball greedy but he is a nice lad, no idea if he will make it but whenever I have seen him since high school he has been outplayed by the opposition. Good player though and I certainly believe that he deserves to play the game even if in the second tier.

Tongan passport or not he will still be classed as 'non federation trained'. The quota doesn't exist anymore. The Tongan passport is more likley to help him get a work permit.

| I read in one of yesterday's rugby papers about the England under 18's coach Dave Elliott hoping that certain individuals from his triumphant England team should get a chance in SL in 2011, including our own Sam Powell. Now I know were not short of HB's at Wigan but I'm wondering whether regular academy watchers feel he'd be up to playing in a few games for us next year if needs be?
I love watching players players make their debut for Wigan and I'm thoroughly looking forward to the likes of Hoffman, Finch and Lima making their's, but I get the most pleasure from seeing our own academy youngsters make their's.
Hopefully we'll see Mellor make his debut this year.

| He's signed full-time with Wigan hasn't he? So there's no reason why he can't earn himself a place in the side.
For me, these players need to be playing at U20's level until that becomes too easy and then send them on dual-registration. I'm sure that's the plan with most of these lads.

Well Madge has proven that he picks players on form and performance so if Powell or any of the other young players are good enough then Im sure they will be given their chance

Rory Kettlewell?
I can't say I ever remember reading his names on the team sheet's Bilko posts's for the Academy games. A loss to us or not?
I wonder whether it was a straight pick between Kettlwell and Leatherbarrow.

What I particularly like about Mellor & Powell (and Greg Burke, too) is that they have "rugby brains". Even at their young ages, they seem to pick the right playing option more often than not.
Mellor was ahead of Powell prior to his injury, but there may not be much to choose between them now.

From what i have seen they are very different types of halfbacks, Mellor with his slender build is very quick and elusive whereas Powell is a stronger, more direct player and likes to get stuck in defence. Mellor is two years older than Powell.
It's great that Wigan have a couple of top prospects coming through in the halves.

That is how I identify players who are going to make it. May not be the biggest nor most athletic, but having the instinct to do the right thing is an uncoachable talent.

thats how most players are identified. you can improve strength, stamina , etc. But there is no substitue for natural talent. the scouts certainly know what there looking for

| Rugby League can't match the money that these Union clubs are offering at such an early stage to these players so all we can do is try and get the best lads tied down early doors and give them first team opportunites to keep them happy.
To lose guys like Marsh, Charnley, Powell etc before they've even made a mark in their sport would be really sad.
