Shalke fans are awesome as well! Took 20k to an away game and had around 70k at their stadium watching the game on big screens! WOW!!

Should definantly try and emulate the atmosphere on the Südtribüne though! Its similar to the south stand just much bigger

I think it's something stupid like 5-6 years ago since the last time Schalke didn't sell all their away tickets, and usually they get in as "home" fans too. It's amazing at an away game that they regularly drown out the home fans, even if Schalke are losing.

To be honest, and I'm not just saying this as a Schalke fan, but that day in the Südtribune was nothing compared to the times I've been in the Nordkurve at Schalke, both however have atmospheres I've never witnessed in any sport any where.

I like both but this particular design is excellent.

I'd just like to say thanks to all the Wigan fans who have made this possible and the momentum it has now gotten can only be a positive thing for everyone involved. The flags looked excellent last year and definitely made the DW feel more like home, adding atmosphere and particularly colour. Looking at some of the flags on display and the "messages" they have on them fills me with pride as I'm sure it does with most of our supporters.

Cheers pal. There'll be loads more colour this year. Last year the aim was to fill the gantry, all 210ft of it. Now it's moving onto the next phase with a mass of flags within the Curva Sud (

). Like the pictures of the flags seen at Barrow but a lot more. We'll end up turning that South Stand into something spectacular

I hope you don't mind me saying this and I think I am right in saying that the word "ultra" in sport has negative connotations and is often stereotyped or perceived to be some kind of "chav/troublemaking" section of support, particularly in football.

It is clear this "movement" is a million miles away from that and as I've stated in my previous post it's already very good and the expansion of it i.e. more flags, more colour, new and different ideas can only add further to the matchday experience, both home and away

In the UK "Ultra" is seen as "Hooligan". On the continent though "Ultras" are just die hard, ultra-passionate fans. The Ultras I met at Schalke were some of the nicest guys I've ever met who would do anything for the club.

Banner by the Schalke Ultras (Ultras GE), celebrating Twente's Dutch championship. The banner was put up in the Nordkurve (Schalke's South Stand equivalent) as the two teams fans are really close. The Schalke fans felt almost as proud and happy about Twente's victory as if Schalke had won the Bundesliga.

I prefer to look at Ultras groups in a positive light and believe that they exist to create noise, colour. passion and to bring stadiums to life. The UK Ultras scene is non-violent. It's just about trying to improve the atmosphere and matchday experience.
There are even Ultras groups in French Rugby Union like Ultras Sapiac. If you have a look at them, it's all sections of the support, young & old who are involved.

Exactly, on the discussion about joining Ultras GE (not easy at all, 1 year probation too!):

"Those who want to find a part of the stadium where they can sit and enjoy their beer need not apply"

It's not necessarily something I thought about the "UK Ultras scene" but I would assume that's what some people may think when they hear that name.

A club like Wigan should have a section of support which is as dedicated to this kind of movement as other clubs in other sports. I wasn't really aware of the situation abroad and it is quite easy to generalise clubs, particularly in Europe, as having hooligan fans.

My knowledge of French RU is primitive so it is nice to be enlightened.
