my dissertation shows that this is HUGE in rugby league, uncertainty of outcome v attendances etc.

| Quote ="goobervision"Ancient and Loyal - not a rugby thing. And, it's under the railway bridge.
The motto adopted "Ancient and Loyal" is in keeping with the arms. For a great many years Wigan has on all occasions, official and unofficial, invariably referred to itself as the "Ancient and Loyal Borough," but few are aware that authority for its use can be found in the Charter of Charles II. - the governing charter of the town down to the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835. In that Charter Wigan is designated by the King "an ancient borough" and granted a "special token of our favour for its loyalty to us," so that nothing could be more fitting than its adoption as the town's motto.'"

But the word LOYAL is on the badge and therefore there is a certain ammount of irony!

| Wigan's average attendance is higher than the capacity of the HJ, a ground which is rarely filled.
Nuff said.
Loyalty is when the fans turn up and support week after week regardless of performances.
Wigan averaged nearly 16k in our near-relegation season, an average Warrington can still only ever dream of.

Just stating facts fella (in reponse to the 'loyal' post by your fellow Wire).
BTW - I have seen Wire fans pouring out of games going back over the years when being pumped. Same goes with every SL club.
I once saw approx 30-40,000 Man U fans get up and leave at Old Trafford with half an hour to go when they were being murdered by Liverpool a couple of seasons ago.....now THAT's a walk.!!

alright then. Yeah every team has fans that leave early, and lets skip straight to the conclusion that all these threads end up in, Wigan have a larger average crowd, therefore the same percentage leaving wigan in comparison to leaving wire looks worse. Simple.
in terms of utd fans leaving early....that's cos they had a plane or train to catch..

You know, I have tried to use that in a debate before and was shot down but I fully agree. Example being :
I bet man for man there were more Leeds fans leaving Wembley with 5/10 mins to go than Wigan last night? % wise compared to all away fans possibly the same. It's fair to say that 6 to 7,000 walked out well before the hooter in the Leeds end at wembley.
Just like we saw a similar number of Saints fans leave at Old Trafford in October.
Watch Leigh (for instance) getting smacked and seeing 300-400 leaving doesn't quite have the same effect does it?
Re: Man U, I also agree most have long journeys to get home.

Yep, the argument is completely valid, anyone who thinks it isn't would be bonkers. Numbers dont lie, last night there were 20,000 there and 5000 at least left before the final whistle, compare that to 25% of 11,000 leaving wire, it just doesnt look the same does it.
i like the fact you said most, i dont have far to travel, but still further than most. Dad was born in manchester though so its okay.

| In reply to 'those were the days' - what stupid posts, you're saying you sdon't want fans to turn up and support Wigan even if they leave early? No fan is better than the other, whether you go to all games or 1 game, or even none, all fans are surely the same and have the same rights to be labelled a 'fan'. Seriously hope you dont want to see our crowds drop to below 10,000 if people leave early, what a ridiculous ting to post. Suppose you're a 'proper fan' then or a happy clapper.
Doesn't matter what time you go from a match the club gets support and interest (and money) by simply turning up at 8pm. No fan is more loyal than another. I no longer have a season ticket and choose my matches due to personal reasons... used to go all home and away but it doesnt make me less of a fan does it.
Personally i stayed until the hooter and got out 10 minutes afterward, parked on the free carpark and was past Pier 15 minutes later - the traffic seriously isnt that bad as some make out though, unless you're in the payment carparks (to which i have no experience)

There wasn't. I admit that thousands left when Dossena scored. Hardly any after Aurelio scored. We're the best team in this country at coming back, nobody in their right mind would leave then. 4-1 was enough for me.
Before
After
Both shots the ground is pretty full. I know it wasn't minutes later, I was down Chester road quicker than Keiron Cunningham in a buffet queue.

| I love winding my wigan friends up with this, it's a bit of banter ammo i even have it in my sig BUT joking aside as long as you put you £19 or whatever it is in to the club coffers who cares ?
If you leave 10 mins early does the club have to give you 1/8th of the cost back ?
If i buy a meal in a restaurant do i have to eat it all because i paid for it ?
It's great for a bit of playful banter but as a serious discussion, really, does it matter, who cares ? I bet the club don't as long as the fans show up in the first place.
