Different sport again but wasn’t Andy Farrell part of the England coaching team when his son Owen played?

| Quote ="DaveO"Just puts both Lam snr ans Lam jny in an awkward position. I can't remember if there has ever been a father coaching a son at this level before. Given this is just weird why would anyone question it if he went onto be success in the NRL? I think the more pertinent question is why would a club take on a father/son team like this?
I think the idea we get a half back "for free" if Lam snr comes is popular with a lot of fans because we are desperate for a better half back than Powell so the fact Lam jnr is 20 so another project and is the son of the (potential) coach are issues that are being ignored. Also if Lam jnr is looked on as a top player already, why would he come here in the first place? He's 20 not 12 so does not need to follow his Dad around.'"
If young Lam becomes a star in due course, the question will be why did we not have a piece of him ourselves when we had the opportunity? And you will be the first to ask it.
Also, I don't see why because it's never been done before, this father/son thing is an issue. If there's no precedent for it, there's no precedent for it not working. And that other argument you make here - if young Lam comes here it must be because he's nothing special! - is very tenuous stuff, and very, very presumptuous.
All this really says it that you're already lining up your reasons for disliking the next administration before it's even been confirmed.
Why don't you just give it a chance?

Ivan Cleary is rumoured to be the next Panthers boss, so doesn’t seem to be an issue for them.

If IL & co had to make decisions based on whether Wigan fans would moan or not, then they wouldn't get anything done. I imagine they take that as a given in any scenario

| It’s a gamble but it’s a gamble both ways in multiple ways too;
Double Lammy
[iSuccess[/i
He’d be fantastic. An astute move from Rads, IL and Adrian Lam.
[iGone Wrong[/i
We’d be saying things like we do now for SW playing Powell. Adrian Lam would get slated, Rads and IL would come in for criticism and we’d be baying for blood.
Just Head Coach Lam
[iLachlan is an NRL sensation[/i
There would be bloody uproar, why wasn’t he brought here with Adrian and all that jazz. Rads and IL would be torn a new one and Adrian wouldn’t be free from flak.
[iNRL Failure[/i
This is probably the only outcome where no one gets any flak other than why we we considering it.

Fantastic. The only time the club's management don't get slagged off - and I'm agreeing with you here, by the way - is when it's a double-negative. In other words, we didn't take a chance and young Lammy didn't turn out to be any good (even though we'd be no better off then than we are now). But this reminds me of lots of bosses I've worked for in the past: do nothing and they can't be criticised for making an error. Thankfully, IL doesn't seem to be cut from that cloth. I live in hope that it'll actually be a double-positive - we take a chance, and Lammy Jnr turns out to be great.

I’m with you; I’d much rather the club act and take a chance and it turn out wrong then not signing him and he turns out to be a sensation. He’s young, cheap and comes with some promise (based on the WC) we’d lose nothing if it doesn’t work out but gain everything if it does.
You could say all new signings are gambles, the only difference here is that it’s our ‘so-called’ Head Coach Elects son.

| Lam jnr may be the key to this.
Lam Jnr is not "an NRL sensation" (yet), IIRC he hasn't even played an NRL game, but maybe just needs a chance to show what he has got.
He got that chance for PNG via his dad, and maybe will get a chance of first team footie via his dad again.
What Dad doesn't want their son to succeed in their dreams?
What Dad wouldn't do anything they could to get their son a big break?

When the Dad is coaching the local juniors nine times out of ten it's because his son wants to play and the Dad has put his hand up to help with the coaching. I did the exact same thing myself a few years ago. So did a few others but it's a totally different thing having a go at coaching so the junior team and your son actually has a coach so they can have a game to making decisions at SL level.
We are talking SL and the needs of Wigan here, not the needs of Lam's son. If he's not played an NRL game then he is another young project player and given Wigan are crying out for a better option than Powell regardless of who's son he is, is that the sort of recruit we should be looking at? We have at least a couple of our own projects of a similar age and we'd be hoping a 20 year old Aussie junior with zero NRL experience is the answer. If he were not Lam's son I really doubt there would be a great deal of enthusiasm for such a signing.
If as some are suggesting this place would go ballistic if he turns out to be a sensation in the NRL because we didn't sign him that really is clutching at straws by predicting the future to excuse signing him. Can I have this weeks lotto numbers please? You can use that excuse to sign any kid you like. If he's got that much potential his Aussie club will be expecting him at 20 to break into the first team about [inow[/i and as such I'd expect him to be already be commanding a wage we would struggle to match.
Apart from the nepotism thing I first mentioned, the risk as I see it is we have to take Lam jnr to entice his Dad to come so it's Wigan that can give his son a break he might never get in Oz whether we really want Lam jnr or not.

| Wasps' coach has his son as a first team regular. So did Northampton (?). In the NRL, Cleary Snr is taking over his son's team. it's hardly that rare.

| It could work both ways. The father could just as easily end up being harder on his son than any other player to prove there is no favouritism.

| I don't think it would be a problem at all, and more than anything I would expect a father would be harder on his son than on anyone else when he is coaching him just to dispell the image that he is getting a free ride.
If Lam does get confirmed I do hope his son is our new Number 7, the only way is up concerning our current incumbent.

I was with you all the way on this until the point where you say his Aussie club will be expecting him to break through. I’d agree if he wasn’t up against Cooper Cronk and let’s face it, no 20 year old souls oust Cronk from any side.

Quite right but if he is the outstanding 20 year old then there are 15 other teams in the NRL he can go to before coming here.

Perhaps Lochlan Lam can use Super League experience to develop and improve his career, a step up from a feeder team rugby and an opportunity to have some life experience playing some big games while gain life experience living in another country. This very transition to new life would be made far easier if his father is also in the same country working with him at the same club.
Many NRL players have raised more awareness to their careers with a spell in SL, and then later gone on to be a success in the NRL, our very own Blake Green for example.
If I were in Lochlan's position, I would be very interested at hearing what such a move can offer.

Not as sure about Lam but I think your Edwards for 2020 could be spot on.
We need some radical change in direction that hopefully Edwards can bring and if that means a "holding" period by Lam personally I can put up with that as long as I see genuine effort week in week out and some improvements on the attacking front.
