Perhaps he's sending the same 'message' to Shaun Wane that Ellery Hanley used to send to Graham Lowe, when, in the days of the War of the Roses, Yorkshire would stubbornly keep selecting him at stand
-off instead of loose-lorward (in other words, a message that existed in the minds of fans with an axe to grind rather than the player).
But if this is a message from Hampshire, I fear he may need to be careful what he wishes for. Shaun Edwards must be eternally thankful that he never made any such stipulations about his early appearances for Wigan. If he had done, he would never have played in one of the greatest Wembley finals of all time and scored one of the greatest tries (from full-back). |

Unfortunately they were very poorly attended, as were the international origins, plus teams kept pulling their best players out with miraculous one-week-only injuries. As such, I don't think this is the way forward, as much as I would enjoy it if it had been well attended with the best players involved. |

Whatever happened to "I'm happy to play wherever the coach wants me to play"?
If the lad's getting into a public p***ing contest with his club coach, I think he's been badly advised. The best thing he can do is rip it up at Cas (in defence as well as attack) to back up some of his cheerleaders on here and put pressure on Wane. |

Sadly, it does not look likely Hampshire will be at Wigan next season. He was evidently unhappy at the club, has instigated the move away and now feels right at home in Yorkshire - even wanting to buy a house over there.
Where would he fit in at Wigan next season if he did come back?
Matty Smith is contracted till 2018
George Williams is contracted till 2018
Sam Powell is contracted till 2019
That three year deal looks like smart business to get a transfer fee from someone. Both Leeds and Saints were rumoured to be interested in him in the off season. Both clubs have been struggling in the halves too.
Massive risk if we did go down that route. I would hate to see a talented 21 year old lad with his ability at one of our rivals with a hunger to prove himself and the potential ability to more than back it up. Has Hampshire ever really been given a run of games like George Williams at halfback?
That said, he needs to take his chance. I hope he smashes it Castleford this week.

Maybe he was simply answering a question. These 'statements' often get misinterpreted by fans. Say for example a journalist asks are you happy to get a chance at stand off, Hampshire answers, yes as I feel it's my best position. It doesn't mean he's refusing to play elsewhere or he is sending a message to anyone, all it means is he answered a question honestly.
Hampshire has been unlucky at Wigan with the timing of an injury, it was at the time when Williams got his chance meaning he didn't get the opportunity at that time. Williams took his chance and got the 6 shirt. I think it would have been foolish for Wane to play kids in both half positions as it would likely have ruined them both. The have been many stand off's who started at full back, Edwards and Lockyer spring to mind straight away.

Final thought in the academy ryan sniffed around and was scoring 20 or 30 tries per season when he went to full back it dropped to bout 5 it might be cause it's the wrong position or style of play'"
Was he be feeling a similar frustration as Cas prior to last weekend? Huge opportunity for him this weekend with fairly big boots to fill as ben roberts has been class for 9 months or so, however, I have a feeling he will be like a duck to water , cheeky try on debut perhaps. |

Hard to disagree with you,ill say again rather than acting like a big shot,head down and play your way into the side,if he's getting into a power struggle with SW theres only going to be one winner and that has to be the coach,allow one player to much leeway and it leads to right old mess down the line.
Time for Hampshire to shut up,say the right things about Cas for the time being and if he does come back come back with a little humilty maybe and get his head down and earn his place in the side in whatever posisiton hes picked in. |

Well on today's performance you can have him back. Although it is possibly unfair to judge on one game, if this was Ryan Hampshire trying to make his mark I would hate to see him in his comfort zone! Very poor today, no threat from his passing or running game. Completely anonymous in the first half and predictable in the second when he had obviously been told to get more involved at half time.
I can't see the potential for him to become a first-choice super league half-back.
On another note, I heard today we have agreed a deal for Justin Carney to join Wigan in 2017 after his year on loan at Salford. I just hope we haven't taken Hampshire in exchange!

That would be an epic signing for us. Can't see where he would fit in though  Unless someone is being shipped out we don't know about. Sarginson is a certainty but we wouldn't sign a top class winger like Carney to play centre when it looks nailed on that Gelling and Gildart will be there next season. Manfredi won't be going anywhere so that leaves Charnley???? |

Difficult to judge having not seen the game, but all last season I was starting to wonder if Hampshire is going to be one of these kids who basically fail to make the final step up. We've seen so many of them before, and so often they are the ones who were raved about as juniors.
There are all kinds of reasons why Hampshire may not be making the impact everyone expected (and they may not all be his fault - maybe none of them are!) - but several of his contemporaries from that strong youth team are now settling nicely into first team life while Ryan is increasingly spoken of only as an afterthought. If he doesn't rip it at Cas it's very difficult to see what kind of future there is for him at Wigan. |

Really disappointing to see cas fans bag Rocky on the back of 1 outing. Wasn't great today but wasn't bad. Whole team struggled, missing some class from the pack always meant we were fighting an uphill battle. Set up a denny try but was pretty quiet, everything seemed to be directed to go through gale, if it's gale receiving it everytime from acting half, not too much ryan can do after 1 game. I'm sure he will improve further.

You get the sense his current deal probably far outweighs the level of performances he's been producing on the pitch (up until Friday). He's been very good so far this year but at the time of signing that deal he could do no wrong and we couldn't afford to lose him on top of Tomkins. Sadly his form has been poor for a couple of years but he looks back towards his best.
It would be very good from a continuity point of view to get him signed up. We're rumoured to be losing Sarginson at the end of 2016 and ideally it'd be good if we could limit it to that. The squad looks pretty well balanced at the minute. |

It that's true, it's the best news I've heard on the recruitment front for quite a while.
Carney's a powerhouse and he puts fear into the opposition.
In addition, as you say, there appears to be a constant questionmark over Sarginson's future at Wigan, while someone else mentioned or hinted that Josh has something like a year to prove that he's still up to the job (though he had a good game last Friday). Even if only one of those of those two players was to leave, we would need some kind of replacement, and I'm not sure there are any exciting three-quarters in the junior ranks who are even close to being ready just yet. |
