Millward and Maguire are two opposite styles. Millward was a superb attacking coach and his philosophy was that so long as we scored more points than the other team, that is all that counts (as we would win). Maguire is all about crushing the opposition's attack with defence. Millward encouraged his players to play freely, he let them do their own thing a lot which is why Longy liked him as Longy was a very creative player. Maguire is all about control and structures (which, when challenged, do leave your team in dissaray). Both have had big impacts on their team but in vastly different ways. Both had teams who won silverware, in Millward's case that included the double. I'd throw Daniel Anderson in there as well because he tweaked our defence and had an impact that as yet was greater than Maguire's. He turned a team that was just on the edge of greatness into a team that achieved the ultimate greatness - they won everything there was to win.

Maguire is a good coach. He's had an immediate impact, like Anderson, because your team just needed a slight adjustment to succeed. As did ours under both Millward and Anderson. The contexts were no different for all three coaches but the style of those adjustments have been very different.

Millward is in Leigh because he has children there.

But he has taken Leigh to a final which they won and had the club not been docked 6 points for a breach of cap in 2010 they would have still been in first spot, which they had been all season until that stupid punishment was handed out.

Personally I think Madge is far a better coach than Millward. Saints best coach over the recent years has been Daniel Anderson for me. He had a similar defensive strategy to madge and also kept their attacking flair. Still feel Madge will be one of the best in the world though! Still got a long way to go and dont forget he's only been a head coach for a year and a half!

milward was crap, he proved that by ruining us,
if he was a decent coach then he could have turned our team around.
he inhereted a team with a winning mentality with players that could coach themselves.

Wigan was a mess when basil took over and had terrible injury problems. He wasn't IMO given time to turn it around. Maguire has done a great job but took over a team of nearly men and tweaked things that needed doing.

Millward did fantastic job at saints and win many cups. We was also great to watch.

I didn't work out at Wigan but you only have to see what he's done St saints and Leigh to see he is a good coach.

I know you may find this hard but nit everything is measured on how things have gone.

You've only got to look at millwards record to see he's a good coach. He win cup after cup at saints and did a fantastic job at Leigh ( twice ).

It didn't work out at Wigan for whatever reason but tha don't make him a bad coach.

In world sports top class coaches have failed at some point in there career but that don't make them a bad coach.

He inherited a good team at Saints, failed here, and has now found his level at Leigh. Glad we agree...

That is the biggest fallacy on these boards.

Mike Maguire told the players to forget EVERYTHING they knew about RL and started from scratch. Right from the very basics, passing, catching, tackling etc. Our team didn't need a slight adjustment to succeed - it needed a massive culture change.

The way we prepare for games/train/play our rugby bares absolutely no resemblance to anything we did under Brian Noble. Mike Maguire changed everything.
