Saw that Gateshead had signed a guy who played for Melbourne in the NRL Grand Final last year. He seemed genuine as they had an actual quote from the player. Blimey though, you'd be wondering what's happened though wouldn't you? Melbourne to Gateshead in the space of 8-9 months!

The funniest fiasco involving Leigh had to be the one involving NZ halfback Shane Varley - pretty sure that was his name.

He arrived at Manchester Airport to sign for Wigan, was met instead by Leigh, who craftily convinced him to sign for them as, according to them, they were going places and Wigan weren't.

If memory serves, this was some time around 1984 / 85 - Wigan were on the cusp of a golden age, and Leigh were about to get flushed down a lavatory of dismal failure, from which even now they haven't emerged.

Wigan, pipped at the post for their new signing, were forced to promote a young but promising schoolboy called Shaun Edwards. Varley, who had a glowing future when he set out that morning, was never heard of again.
