| I always love this kind of thread, nobody ever goes for players before the 80s. How about Ashton, Boston, Gee or Sullivan just to mention a few?

People tend to pick players they've seen play. Rogues will probably pick Jim Sullivan

| I'd take Sam Panapa thesedays. Mark Preston over Roberts, and McGinty over Lockers.
Hardly Wigan's best as well!

| Amen to Ashurst.
Leaving recent players out, McTigue at prop and Eric Ashton in the centres.
Only left William B out as winger not quite so crucial......perhaps

Can't see anyone at Wigan keeping up with those two. Frighten speed.

Keri Jones would have given them both a run for their money, Empire Games sprinter before turning to rugby, pity he was so injury prone.

| Three who so far have not been mentioned.
Glynn Shaw - man monster, a character and hard as nails, and could lead a good sing song.
David Bolton - fast and elusive
Alan Davies - would really "look after" and develop Ainscough

| Good shout on Glyn Shaw. When we got him and Brian Case I knew we would start succeeding.
What a comparison with the wimps who comprise most of Wigan forwards nowadays.

| Andy Farrell, he just never let us down. I'd have him at prop with Fielden sitting it out on the sidelines, and just watch that team pick up with Farrell as captain!
As for the other two it's hard for me to pick as I've only been watching since 01 but I'd go with Rads at full back with Richards shifting to the wing, dropping Roberts, then Renouf in the centres instead of Bailey, he was awesome.

| Would a team of past Wigan 'second-raters' be better than our current team?
i.e, players who wouldn't get into a Wigan dream team etc.
For example...
Phil Blake
Tony Iro, BJ Mather, Sam Panapa, Mark Preston,
Nigel Wright Bobby Goulding
Les Davidson Wayne Godwin Scott Quinnell
Simon Houghton Mike Forshaw
Billy McGinty
?

| As long as we're cloning players, I'd go the whole hog and clone the same plyer multiple times, so it would be:
Radlinski
Offiah
Hanley
Hanley
Offiah
Hanley
Edwards
Platt
Dermott
Platt
Betts
Betts
Hanley
Bench of: Platt, Platt, Hanley, Hanley
That ought to cover it!

Interesting one that.
I don't think that any of the current side would even make it onto the bench of a WRLFC dream team - they wouldn't even make the same training squad (though I'm prepared to make allowances for the youngsters until we see how they turn out).
I'd say in most positions you could go down three or four deep before you'd even consider a current player.
For instance I'd say Hock is currently one of our better/consistent performers and where do you compare him against Clarke, Betts, Farrell, Hanley or Furner (OK so you'd have Hanley or Farrell at loose but the other would still make the dream team in the back row.
Full back? Pick one of Hampson, Radlinski, Lydon or Blake before you even consider Mathers.
And as for the 3/4 line forget it!! Over the last cpole of decades we've had some of the greatest wingers & centres you could have hoped to watch. I'll start you off - Bell, Iro (x2), Gill, Preston, Myers, Miles, Renouf, Conolly, Offiah, Dallas.

| I purposely chose players who were good, but hardly ever first pick for the squad they were part of. All with games under their belt but all eventually fired off.
Who that team beat match the Wigan of today?

Blake was never a 'second rater', he only left the club because Jack Robinson signed Botica, John Monie never wanted him to leave, he was outstanding while at Wigan.

| Quote ="Last Son of Wigan"Something a little more light-hearted after another poor week in the world of Wigan RL.
Just for the sake of fun... If you could have ANY player who's ever played for Wigan to be in our current 1st team now who would you have?
Maybe Greg to partner Sam?
Maybe Platt in our front row?
Dean Bell or Gene Miles in the centre?
Faz for some leadership?
Looking forward to hearing your ideas, and hearing something more light-hearted!!'"
if we took your post literally im sure most of us could find 13 players and 4 subs who would get into the present team
ie..none of todays lot will ever feature in an all time best team list imo.
