You only have to look at Wrexham and to see how keen they were to get the Crusaders on board to know owning a stadium is not any guarantee of income. If you own a sizeable ground in order to make it pay you need to use it more than from Feb to October every other week.

Even Man Utd let Old Trafford be used for other events and they don't do it out of charity. Trying to upgrade Central Park with the Whitbread Stand was a big reason the club got into debt and had to sell the place. I remember being quite proud the club was doing the ground up and looking forward but it helped see us lose the place.

Reading that article, the ones at risk are not Wigan RLFC but Wigan Athletic, and that is what Whelan is most concerned about.

He can see as clearly (maybe more so as he controls the money) as anyone that Latics need a tenant that will bring in money to help them survive, particularly once they are relegated and crowds dwindle. He wants the football club to survive and avoid an instant financial implosion like Gretna FC suffered once his and the Premiership's tv money are not there. The happy by-product for us is that we are in a stable position at a good stadium for a long time.

I didnt hear them complaining when the council's admiration of WRLFC allowed them to get the new stadium they needed. As we all know the council would never have allowed the JJB to be built without us. I understand that they wouldnt have allowed it without them either but at least we dont moan about the council lmao. I'm pretty sure the council helped them build a stadium to share with us right? Just a thought...
