Down 3% from 14,504 last year but considering the "credit crunch" and all that I think it's been a good effort. Think we'd have got a few more on for Saints had we played on Good Friday.

Probably the only slightly disappointing ones??????
Wire especially as the week aftert the CC Semi you'd have thought they would have brought maybe a couple of thousand more???
Bradford's support as gone dire However it was a TV Game
Though Hull would bring more but then again given the poor season they've had I suppose its understandable.
Overall a fantastic effort given overall circumstances!

They are the attendances for their fixtures away to Wigan this season.

Also in 2008 we played Leeds twice at home and we got just over 15,500 v Wire who were poor then and not half as optimistic as they are now.
The Leeds crowds were about 14,500 and 13,200 so it could be argued playing them twice dilutes the importance compared to marketing one game like the "big one" but we still swapped a Leeds fixture for one of Salford or Celtic (take your pick) and they were around 11,000 crowds.
Given the inconsistent season we have had I think the crowd has held up really well. Can it do so for another season if we see no early season improvement in 2010 (i.e. not a slow start)? I have my doubts but then I am surprised we broke the 14K average this season.
Didn't it get announced at the Hull game when the crowd figures were mentioned at some point that the ambition is to get ahead of Leeds on average attendance in the future?

That was certainly mentioned in the Evening Post. Pretty sure it was an interview with Mick Hogan.

| Decent turnout overall, it's a shame we didn't get Wire at a better time or that would surely have got a few hundred more down. It's hard to compare like for like as well with us having Celtic and Les Catalans instead of Leigh and Widnes, who would surely have bought more down.

Hull earlier in the season would have helped too.
Another average of over 14,000 has to be applauded. The number of local lads is another bonus for me.

| I'd like to see the Warrington game given some extra importance by the RFL and be played as an opening fixture every season on a rotating basis between the DW and the HJ stadiums.
That would guarentee a full house at their place each year and at least 20k on at the DW which can only be a good thing for the game as a whole.
Somebody else mentioned playing for a one off trophy named in memory of Mike Gregory which would seem a great idea. I know we played the xmas fixture last year and may do again this year but when the sides are at maximum half strengh it's not too fitting for such a great bloke.

It was a complete waste of time last Xmas and I don't want an early fixture again. [url=http://wigan.rlfans.com/news.php?readmore=641We put a decent team out whilst they had a total reserve side[/url. What was the point?

I think one suggestion for Mick Hogan could be to try and market he Warrington game a bit better. I'm not criticising what he has achieved so far and the efforts of the marketing team at Wigan. I think that average for this year is very good and one I am pleased with but for Warrington we should be looking at 20K. Okay it was at a bad time when we played Warrington which is no-ones fault but I think that is a fair suggestion to try and arrange Warrington as our first home match next season. Last time we played Warrington at home for the first match of the season in 2007 we got 21,000.

I'm sure their Challenge Cup success will mean more supporters home and away next season.
Agree that thr RFL could look at pairing us with Wire the first game of the season. 20,000 isn't unrealistic.

That would get the league off to a fantastic start crowd wise.

agreed, wigan and wire at the jjb two years back got a huge crowd didnt it.
why did the rfl stop the grand final teams playing in the first week of the season? i seem to remember playing bradford first game of the season after we played them in the grand final. i also remember bradford playing saints in 03 after the 02 grand final. one of the opening games of the season should always be the grand final re run in my opinion.

| That wire game starting off the season was brilliant, it would be great to have that again, but I think whoever we play first game next season we should try to geta huge crowd again.
I think the RFL should to the fixtures so there is one derby every friday! Then sky sports could market it that way and have all other games on saturdays and sundays.

Why not just start off with all the clubs with the biggest support at home to guarentee great crowds.
Wigan v Wire
Leeds v Hull KR
Hull v Cas
Saints v Bradford
That would also ensure some huge crowds.

The average crowd for the opening weekend was about 18,000.
Take the Twickenham double header out and it was just shy of 11,000.
That's a big difference and shows that something like a double header to open the season could be a massive success.

| The Wire crowd was a disappointing one, with obvious reasons, but on another date, there could have been a further 3-4k in the ground for that one.
As has been said, as an opener it could be brilliant, and just looking through the stats, I didn;t realise it had attracted 21k a couple of years back, I had in my head it was around 18k.
That shows the real potential for this game.
Overall, as a club you have to be pretty happy with the crowds, in the current climate, they have held up well, and with a little bit more luck and good fortune, you could have seen an increase.
Your club certainly make more effort in marketing that mine.

| Considering the inconsistant performances and pityfull away support (Quins, Catalans, Hudds, Hull, Cetlic, Bradford, Salford) this year the average have held up ok.
Just think if we could play winning entertaining rugby every week I believe the average could get close to 17k
