According to my grandson, there are several schools in the borough where football is now treated as the equal of TGG.

Many sports masters of the Wigan past would turn in their graves.

Out of all High Schools in the borough, due to it's geographical position you'd think John Fisher would be a footballing school. I found it hard to play against Fisher without noticing Springfield Park in the background.

yes ainscough was year below me, went to leigh for a bit. I know of liam same year as his sister at primary etc...

there's quite a few good whelley-based players around my age and below who are/were decent enough to get a good run in academies.


Lets just say the Bolton schools championship in 1997 was 1 sided.

I went to Abraham Guest and although we always had good teams, not many made it.

Players off the top of my head are Mick Nanyn, Lee Doran and Stef Ratchford.

They had all the ex players pics along the corridor walls, there was so many of them!!

Matty Leigh was in my year at Fisher and we both played in the same team both at Fisher and Judes. I seem to recall that Ged Satziker (sp) is or was the games teacher st the school.

Did Daniel Pyke ever get anywhere? I know he played for Britain at BARLA level. From my year no one made it, though I think Adam Hunt used to be on Wigan academy's books. We had a terrible team though to be honest.

Liam Colbon and Josh Vievers who is our reserves.

Pykey was on Wigan scholarship but broke his leg which seemed to end his stint there. He played for Leigh reserves for a couple of years as well as Ireland students not too long ago.

He was playing for Shevington this season.
