| Have it on excellent authority that Amos has decided to hang up his boots. He is going back to Australia in 5 weeks time. Nothing confirmed by the club yet but I expect it will be confirmed shortly.
You have to feel for him. He showed glimpses of absolute class but just couldn't stay free from injury.
Good luck to him

| If true it's no suprise.
Sadly it's been a cruel four years for him and us. He's only had one pre season in his time with us and showed himself to have exceptional talent but a great season was cut short by a bad injury and he never recovered.
The best thing I can say about him is that those few months at the start of 2010 will live long in the memory. They were possibly the best few months worth of individual performances I've seen in a Wigan shirt.
That only made the last 2 years even more frustrating.

I agree with this. Those performances were up there with the brilliance of John Ferguson at times.

| His efforts in 2010 won't be forgotten he showed glimpses of some of the best rugby I've seen such a shame he picked up the leg injury. Thanks for the memories and good luck for the future Amos.

| Feel so sorry for the lad.
On his day he was the best FB in SL (Sam wasn't at FB then).
A quality player who's had it all ruined by a cruel injury after completing one of the greatest try's he ever scored.

| Whilst we can be rose tinted about 5 or 6 breathtaking performances in early 2010 - you have to point the finger perhaps and say had he performed like that in 2009 we might have had Wembley and/or Grand Final to cherish that year as well. Didn't do enough that year for me. Sad he has to retire like, but its no major loss in the Grand Scheme of things. Could argue Josh is doing and will be far better than he ever was.

| Such a shame - he had a rare talent.
There are hardly any players in SL who can turn a game on its head with a few moments of genius. Sam Tomkins aside, I'm not sure who else is SL at the moment is capable of doing this.
At his peak Roberts was. He gave us a couple of months of sensational rugby - an interesting comparison would be with Gene Miles. Amos' brief period of brilliant rugby was almost as good as the second half of Gene Miles' single season with us, but was briefer and more tantalising than Gene's great cameo. Gene was a legend who had already achieved great things before he came to Wigan to end his career in England. The missed opportunity of not signing him on for one more year was sad for us as Wigan fans but Gene had nothing left to prove. Amos' inability to capitalise on his talent was a tragedy for him and deprived us and the wider RL of seeing what he could have become at Wigan. Amos had the physical gifts of a Robinson or an Offiah, he could have been a legend....

| If it's true (it seems likely, but not confirmed) then I obviously wish him all the best in whatever he chooses to do, whether he remains in rugby league or pursues a career outside it.
His form early in 2010 was outstanding and he was arguably the form player in the league at that point. It just goes to show how quickly things can slip away when you're playing professional sport. Every since that injury against Wakefield he's never been the same player.
As things have transpired we've done incredibly well without him, and his retirement should remove a fair amount of money from the salary cap but it's a shame if his career has come to an end on a low note rather than a high.

Agree.
5 or 6 excellent games in 3 and a half years make him one of the worse value for money overseas signings the club has every made, no matter if the retirement rumours are false.

| No point carrying on with this topic if he's denying it. Let's just hope he can get back into the first team soon - I don't really see where he fits in though.

| Gutted for him... So sad it did not work out. The guy was a genuine talent, its no surprise he looked so dejected in 20's games if this has been looming on the horizon.

No way !
You don't see many of Fergusons calibre . If your lucky you might see one or two in a lifetime.
Roberts played a few very good performances and that's all.
Shame really, but we have had several players in the past that have been injury prone.

He was superb for about 10 games at the start of 2010. Even if he has been awful value for money in the long term, that is still the best I have seen any Wigan player perform in my time.
I still maintain that we would have been a better side with Amos at 1 and Sam at 6.
He has been a waste of cap space for over a year now, so has Fielden. Two of our highest earners no doubt. Will be intresting to see who we can sign with so much cap space available after this season.

He got injured in his 10th game that season, started the season on the wing and only moved to FB when Phelps got injured. I don't remember him being "superb" in every game, certainly not until he moved to FB, but I do remember him being unplayable for around 5 or 6.

He was. He switched to FB during the away game at Cas when Phelps went off injured. That game was the most dominant one man performance I've seen in a long time. That day he was totally unplayable.

This.
And whatever we may think about his "value for money" its a awful way for him to end his career, IF TRUE. To be honest i find the "value for money" comments a little distasteful.

He started the Wire game at FB, which was the 3rd game of the season. Played on the wing for the first two.

Why? We got half a dozen excellent games from him in 3 and a half years. Given his reputation when he came it's unlikely we've been paying him peanuts. There's a lot of rose tinted memories going on at the moment because of a handful of games in the early part of 2010.

Its not rose-tinted at all. He was crap first season, so was Pat. Then he was excellent, so was Pat. Then he had a serious injury. True the money side does come into it, but its a persons career as a top athlete we are talking about, and it was cut short as he was settling in. I just feel that your comments are a little callous.
Said my piece...

| I agree that "value for money" statements are distasteful. Don't forget that Amos at FB seemed to be settling into the team and a position that suited him and played some fantastic games. However, whilst playing for Wigan he has suffered an injury which at best is severely career limiting and could be career ending from the general posts.
Who is going to take on his contract after Wigan? It's not as if he will have a great future career based on u20's games.
Now, if this were a player Wigan had signed and barely played without an injury sustained playing for Wigan were to have Value for Money in a discussion then I wouldn't have the same complaint.
I hope that Amos is able to play again and with the same flair we briefly saw, if only to allow him to sign for another team and keep a career going after injury at Wigan.
