Excellent player.
Better than either Colbon or Ainscough, he'll do well for you.

How realistically can you say that?
Charnley may have the potential to be better than both Colbon and Ainscough but I honestly can’t see how you can make a statement that he’s a better player than them?
Both Ainscough and Colbon are proven SL standard players & Charnley isn’t as he’s not even made a SL appearance yet.
That’s not to say the kid doesn’t have potential.

| Lets get real here - Ainscough was a flash in the pan. Once sussed out he was made to look very suspect. If he was that good, why has he been farmed out to anyone who will have him?
Was speaking to Josh last night and I hope it works out for him - but maybe not this Friday! If certain players werent in the Wigan end of season clearout window, I am sure he would have featured this season in the first team. He is only just 19 and I am sure he will be there or there abouts next season for you.
Any strength in the rumour that Karl Pryce is going to Hull KR next season?

I agree with the general gist of what you are saying but I really dont see how Ainscough is proven SL standard. This season he was dropped after one game against Harlequins because he was a liability and was considered a disappointment and a defensive liability at Cas and they didnt want him back. He has done okay at Widnes in NL1 by all accounts. I think it is very much in the air if Ainscough is SL standard or not and he will have to improve an awful lot defensively if he is to attain that level in my opinion.

Cas didn't want him back because they had players returning from injury . And to judge him this season on one game outside that donkey Bailey in the centres is simply not fair. He also qualifies for dual registration which goes a long way to explaining why he gets farmed out and other players such as Pryce (who is vastly overrated by many on here IMO) do not IMO.

That still doesn't alter the fact saying Charnley is a better player is silly given he has never played SL.
If rumours are to be believed Ainscough will be out at the end of the season and if true I think he will have been hard done to by the club and feel he should have at least been given as many games as Pryce to prove himself in a full strength Wigan side under the new regime.

| I posted about the move in the rumour thread yesterday afternoon as it wasn't officially confirmed then. Its a good move for Josh and Wigan. It gives him the chance to step up and test himself at Super League level, which is something his form in the reserves certainly warrants. And Wigan benefit from him gaining experience at a higher level and seeing where he is at in his career development. Lets wish him luck and hope he goes well for Hull KR in this loan period.

Morgan's recently been giving the kids a chance, hopefully it'll work out for this lad too. It's good that Wigan have co-operated on such short notice too.
And, on that Karl Pryce rumour, despite his injuries, I would snap him up for definate - hope that ones true!

His try scoring record proves he’s a SL standard winger who has faults in his game.
At this moment in time we don’t know anything about Charnley’s ability at SL level. Yes we can say he was excellent at academy level and that he should make the grade but until he plays a handful of SL games we can’t make sweeping statements saying he’s better than players like Colbon & Ainscough.

| Excellent move for him.
We've seen this year players like Tuson and Farrell going out on loan, working hard, playing well and then being involved at the first team. Must give all the younger players the motivation and incentive to go out on loan and push themselves to get involved in the team.

He will have to go some way to be better than Colbon, before he got injured he was one of our most consistent performers, and scored some brilliant tries.

His try scoring record proves nothing at all and certainly doesnt automatically mean he is SL standard. He has played less than 20 SL games and has glaring deficencies and faults in his game. There is no way that anyone can say he is SL standard or not after such a short period of time when he has so many faults in his game.

I agree that there is no way people can say he is better than players like Colbon & Ainscough at SL level. However in my opinion it takes far more than a handful of games to say if someone is SL standard or not. Colbon is a proven SL player and has done a decent, consistent job at Wigan and Hull KR. Ainscough has proved nothing of the sort and shouldnt be in the same bracket as Colbon. Based on comparing the players at academy level I would say that Charnley is better than Ainscough but that doesnt always transfer to SL level.

Let’s not get hung up on the details as in a roundabout way we seem to saying the same thing.
You can’t say Charnley is better than Colbon or Ainscough at the SL level because as you’ve said talent in the academy doesn’t always transfer through.

That quote could just as easily apply to Karl Pryce. However, as DaveO says, KP has been has given an extended run to make his case, Ainscough hasn't (yet).
Getting back on topic, though, and I think the Charnley loan is an excellent move for him, as it has been for so many of our other youngsters. Hope he plays tomorrow (it's on SKY) - most people won't have seen anything of him yet. He really is an excellent prospect.

He's played 18 SL games and scored 17 tries over the last two seasons.
He is clearly SL standard. His game is not perfect but then neither are the games of plenty of other players who play SL every week.

| He certainly showed a lot of potential in the few appearances he made at Blackpool, knows his way to the line and defensively was very strong, however super league being a much higher level, not sure how he'll go, good luck to the lad big chance to prove himself.

Dave'"
I am sorry he is not clearly SL standard at all and it is very much up in the air if he is or not. You are basing your entire argument on tries scored, which is a very flawed argument as the vast amount of tries that a winger scores any winger could score. In any other aspect of his game he has been found wanting, not just at Wigan but at Castleford and even Widnes fans have criticised his defence in NL1.
If he was rated by Maguire then I am sure he would have got more than 1 game this season. The mere fact that Goulding, a centre, has been picked on the wing before him for vast chunks of the season, speaks volumes. Even Pryce got an extended run in the side to see what he could do. If Ainscough is so clearly SL standard then he would have played more than 1 SL game this season before getting dropped. Castleford would have also taken him back, as was originally meant to be a season long deal, and they were still short of players. Players that are rated by other SL clubs can always get loan deals at SL clubs, as previous players have shown but it seems that only NL1 clubs wanted Ainscough. Indeed why do Hull KR want Charnley, an unproven SL player, instead of Ainscough? Surely the mere fact that many people think that Ainscough has not really proven anything, has not shown himself yet to be SL standard (not just on this thread but others) means that he is not clearly anything?

I would have preferred Carmont but never mind
It looks like opinion is split on the kid, I'd be surprised to see him feature this week with such a short turnaround. A debut in the Hull derby though? What a baptism that would be.

The majority who are anti have probably never even seen him play.
Ask any of the regular academy team watchers on here for a more accurate assessment.
The kid is a very good player, and one who I have mentioned many times in the last two years as one to watch.

I can defiantly see how this is going….
Not that it matters at all in any way shape or form but I’ve seen him play about 5 times.
Here are some questions for you;
How many times have you seen him play in SL? What are his SL stats like when you compare them to Colbon’s?
How many SL tries has he scored? How many SL tackles has he broken? What’s his positional play like at SL level when he’s got guys like Dobson who can land a ball on a 50p? His positional play at academy level is fantastic but is it going to be exploited by international wingers like King or Donald? What’s his defence like against fully fledged MEN like Hall or King? How does his fitness and strength stand up to the SL level? What’s his mental toughness like when he’s been outplayed by some quality players?
We can all guess at these answers BUT until he actually plays some SL rugby you can’t compare the two. At this moment in time there is a massive difference in someone like Colbon who has played in big games & proven himself against great players and Charnley who hasn’t played any SL rugby.
Surly you can see how daft your statement was?
Oh and don’t try and turn this into an anti Charnley rant as no one is saying he doesn’t have the potential to be a class winger but there is a massive difference in having potential and converting it into actual results.

As Charnley has never played at Superleague level that is a stupid question.
However I have seen, Colbon, Ainscough and Charnley at academy level, and I stand by my statement that Charnley has been the best of the three.
