| A selection of quotes from THE blithering idiot of Rugby League Garry Schofield
On Wigans chances for 2010
"It's disappointing to hear Michael Maguire, Wigan's new coach, talking so much about fitness and defence. I hope this doesn't mean they will play with no flair because they might suffer for it - we don't need a coach stifling someone like Sam Tomkins. But they look more stable than in recent years, although not good enough to win something...." prediction 5th
Any regrets in Rugby League?
"just one - not leaving Leeds under Dougie Laughton and going to Wigan. I was on £20,000 a year at Leeds and Maurice offered me a three-year deal at £100,000 a year. Wigan offered Ellery Hanley and £25,000 for me but in the end they signed Ellery for £250,000. That's loyalty and I wasn't repaid for it either."
Would he like to be working in Rugby League? - Schofield explains why he's never had a coaching job.
"I'd love to be at one of the top clubs and also in the international setup. Man management is just as important as technical coaching at international level, [BEST BIT COMING UP if you get the little things right off the field like =#FF0040keeping everyone happy and getting the environment right it makes a huge difference"
Of the players playing today who do you think is most similar in terms as strengths and weaknesses to yourself as a player?
"I'd have to say Sam Tomkins. He's got the talent to come into a game when he can see something is on and he's not frightened to do the unexpected. He likes to kick over the top and he'll go for an interception. He doesn't stick to one part of the field like a lot of today's players."
How disappointed were you not to win the Golden Boot because the award was suspended during your finest years as an international player? (Schofield talks about another trophy he failed to win)
"I was in line to receive it in 1991 but the sponsors gott the hump that it wasn't going to an Aussie! I didn't know that until a couple of years ago, but when I heard about it I was extremely proud to have been considered. It would have been based on my performances in the tests in 1990 and I look back on my performances in those tests with a great deal of pride.... Being crowned the worlds best is the highest honour you can receive"
How do you feel when you hear modern players complaining about burn out and having to play 'too many games'?
"It's absolute codswallop! I can't believe any sportsman can say they're tired. The rest period and rehab has never been better. The advice they get on diet etc is far better than it ever has bee. Its laughable to be honest. You should enjoy sport and not moan about being tired. They only play about 30 hours a year, even less if they are a forward"
What was your opinion on Ellery Hanley's refusal to talk to the media when he played?
"He should never have been allowed to get away with it, especially when he was Great Britain captain. No other international captain in any sport would have done that, but Maurice was the man in charge and he let him carry on like that. Favouritism for a Wigan legend perhaps?"
To be continued.

Garry Schofield? Bitterness towards Wigan? When knock me down with a feather.
In fairness I'd be bitter if one club (i.e Wigan) had denied me winning major domestic trophies 9 times in a career whilst also losing 2 more major cup finals not against Wigan but played in Wigan at Central Park.
In the end Wigans domination of that period meant his only domestic honour was a Yorkshire Cup medal.
I enjoyed writing this last year....... wigan.rlfans.com/news.php?readmore=726

| Fantastic quotes from Schofield... had me in stitches. Mainly just remembering booing him vociferousy as a kid. Never signed for Wigan??? Well we missed a trick there.
I love it.
I wonder if there's any chance of Jonathan Davies and Sonny Nickle coming out with something similar then I'll have a hat trick of child hood RL villains.

You know it might be the several Vodka & Dr Peppers I've had tonight, but I'm finding this thread increasingly hilarious. Couldn't agree more WK, the foresight and ambition we showed in the late eighties and nineties catapulted Rugby League into the modern era and although we've been a shadow of that former self in recent years we're still the No. 1 CLUB in the world. Respected and renowned as a result of that same foresight, ambition and success. Argue all you want about the salary cap, unfair, wages, transfer fees etc etc etc, the trophies are in the cabinet. All the record books tell us is the trophies we won.
I thank you.

| I call BS on his salary offer from Wigan claims. That was a time when we sold Ellery (and Kevin Iro) and we were actually trying to get wages down - when we signed Offiah shortly afterwards we had to call in pretty much every favour imaginable to raise the cash to buy him (including a big wedge from our sponsors). So at a time when we were strapped for cash (Whitbread stand in full cash draining mode) we supposedly offered Mr Schofield 100k per year? to join a dominant side that players were actually approaching us and wanting to join us (not having to chase anybody, including Offiah).
Remember we shortly afterwards lost Andy Goodway and Andy Gregory against Monie's wishes due to salary constraints, and had to back out of an agreement for Miles to play a 2nd year (again due to lack of money).
So we desperately wanted to sign Gary Schofield when we had Edwards + Gregory at 6&7 and Bell and Miles at centre, all at a time when finances were starting to look really tight???????? yeah right......

This. A thousand times this.
Garry, if you've the balls and you happen to read this (I'd bet my bottom dollar he posts on here under some pseudonym - after all, no-one listens to him otherwise), at least have the decency to admit you're talking crap.

| The thing is he's been spouting twaddle for so long he probably believes it. The Golden-boot-that-never-was bit makes me smile the most particularly as he ends the paragraph with 'being crowned the world's best is the highest honour you can receive' to try and give the impression to people that he was the best player in the world which he wasn't. As a Wigan fan you never went to Leeds fearing what Garry Schofield was going to do, he pulled off a disappearing act in a far more convincing manner than Leon Pryce could ever manage. The whole thing just reminds me of those football players whose claim to fame is that they had trials for United.

| My my, a lot of selective memory on display here. Just because he talks 100% bollox doesn't mean he wasn't a top class player in his day. I find it strange that a player's legacy is altered so much by his post playing activities and comments. Look at Mike Gregory as an example of the other side of the coin.

As an opportunist striker and support player, there were few better. And his efforts in that capacity were well rewarded with a panful of tries.
But he was never in the Golden Boot category, IMO. His limitations were finally exposed when he tried to move to stand-off. Didn't he play 6 against us at Wembley once, and get badly shown up?

So you missed the quote form Schofield about Leeds signing Hanley for £250,000? Do you think he went there to play for peanuts?
So although the sarcasm is misplaced you are in effect correct - Leeds were in the same boat as us in those years as far as money went. They flung cash at the team to try and compete like they were printing the stuff themselves.
Quote Thank good for the salary cap, if you win 8 trophies in a row now i will actually respect that
'"
As Leeds of that era show it takes more than money win trophies. The reason we won so much was because we were the most professional and well drilled outfit in the competition and we turned players like McGinty, Hall and Panapa into good players by employing better methods than just about every other team. We had plenty of home gown players as well such as Edwards, Clarke, Betts and many others.
By hey, if you want to show your ignorance of all that and if it makes you feel better to think we only won those trophies because we had more cash than anyone else you feel free.
I might respect your opinion if you simply acknowledged what went on back then was more than down to money instead of the simplistic nonsense that gets trotted out time and again.

| IMO Gary Schofield is a compulsive liar and fantasist who can't stand to see the game & players develop and improve since his retirement because it will over shadow him and his era. A great ex-player ruined by his weird, odd, false and off the mark ramblings.
