Quote ="hula89"I was thinking to a point raised by Rio Ferdinand (of all people) during our Play-Off campaign.
He followed Wigan and mentioned us alot on Twitter and when asked why he mentioned that he had followed Wigan since the greats of Hanley and Offiah in the 90s. I think this shows that the real problem is that the game has gone down in profile since we had players like those. They were in the public eye much more (probably because at the time their team couldn't get in trouble for things) I mean isnt there even a thing to do with them getting paid to go on things like Soccer AM now? I was told the reason we dont send players on it is coz it counts towards the cap if they get paid so noone goes on.
We need more money and higher profile. Someone made the point that the cap arguments are saying that if we paid more then more kids would play rugby, well actually YES!
Consider that at 18 most of you here will have had a job, now imagine that you are offered a full time contract to play RL but they can only give you £5k a year coz of the cap, now I know it doesnt take a genius to realise that £5k a year is a pap wage so what do they do? They are forced to leave the sport and get a proper job on £12k plus. These players haven't reached their potential yet and havent had the chance; this is the ONLY way i can see any blame being put on the cap at all.'"
If TV appearance fees do count towards the cap then the game has gone even crazier than I thought.
No doubt some die-hard flat-earther supporting the CC will be on this thread shortly to explain why its good to keep the profile of the game low....
