It's been a feeling of mine whilst doing cherryandwhite.co.uk that the club has lost a lot of pride in its rich history since we had to leave Central Park. So I was delighted to hear that a real effort is being made to revitalise the past players association and equally delighted to be able to help.
Basically what they are after is your help in locating any past players, from academy level upwards. I must stress I don't want you to post information in replying on the board - if you do have any info either [url=http://privmsg.php?mode=post&u=699Private Message[/url me on here or email me bilko@cherryandwhite.co.uk
Below is a statement by Ernie Benbow who has volunteered to work hard on this subject and contacted me about it.
Quote I am doing some work on a voluntary basis on behalf of both the Wigan Rugby League Club and the Wigan RL Past Players Association. My work is directed at finding as many past players of Wigan RL as possible to encourage them to join, to increase the numbers of the Association but primarily to bring them back into the Wigan RL family.
The current membership of the PPA is very low; it has not met for almost 2 years. It has only 41 members of which about half may be considered active. This is a chance to put right the wrongs of the past. In this way we can make this Club great again and have recognised the debt that the Club owes to its past players. Membership from the 1970s through to the 80s, 90s and into first decade of the 21st century is very, very low.
As a season ticket holder and a life-long supporter, I have been using my time, effort and energies, in association with the Club itself, and the existing Past Players Association to ensure that the new Association works. In the last two weeks we have got the commitment from an additional 60 past players to become Wiganers again. This is a long road and quest continues for as long as it takes.
Wigan Rugby League Club is the most famous rugby league club in the world and is recognised throughout the sporting world. The Club’s list of achievements is lengthy and it is recognised as the most successful club in the sport.
Whilst its supporters rightly recognise the Club’s past glories and recall the feats of its players, both past and present, what has been done to properly recognise the achievements of those players? What has been done to thank those players for their efforts in Cherry and White? What has been done to look after those players once they have left the Club and their years of playing have taken their toll? The answer is very little.
It is beholden upon the Club and its supporters to protect the club’s heritage, to cherish its memories and to ensure that it pays the respect due to those individuals that have given so much to this great Club.
The Greatest Rugby League Club in the world must have an association fit for its stature and fit for those who have contributed to its past. There are very many past players who, long after playing for the Club, should be appreciated. However, those players are not officially recognised by the Club. These players are spread locally, nationally and worldwide. They will always be a part of the rich fabric of the Club.
The Club is now seeking to revitalise the Past Players’ Association (“PPA”). This is being done in a partnership approach between the Wigan RL, the existing Past Players Association and assisted by myself as Wigan RL Past Players Liaison Officer.
The intended aims of the PPA are many and varied. We would wish to look after the well-being of former players; whether that help be financial or otherwise. We want to promote friendship and the ability for current supporters to hear of past exploits. We will encourage and provide whatever facilities available for players to meet and rekindle lifelong friendships. We will encourage the passing of their knowledge, skills and experiences to future generations.
We must protect the past for future generations. Once gone, the exploits and achievements of the Club’s former players should never be forgotten. They are Wiganers – once a Wiganer always a Wiganer.
We want all our past players to be members so that continue to be part of the Wigan family. We need your help in locating past players to bring them back into the Wigan family. If you are a past player or you have a relative who once played for Wigan RL or your friend or neighbour is a past player then we would like you to contact us. The aim is that every past player should be a member. We need more membership given a Club of Wigan’s stature and history so the search goes on. If you have contact with any past team mates from Wigan then put them in touch with me please.
There will be more about this initiative in the coming weeks through, hopefully, press coverage and in the Club’s programme.
