Heard the news a couple of weeks ago. Think he's not so much retired but gone off with the hump! Very sad to see him go.

Shame if he has, Steve was a jolly nice fella and always happy to chat.

Steve is the only constant in our club since day 1. Must be something bad for him to go. I believe it's something to do with sackings in the backroom staff. Apparently, he just cleared up the dressing room and went. Sad day for our club.

Nothing to do with sackings....unless he was banging Amanda or Maddie who both left of their own free will

So question. How long has Steve been with the club?

Since the beginning in 1981. He was head groundsman at Fulham Football Club at the time and continued to combine both roles for a number of years.

Ah, that's not quite true. After we left Craven Cottage, for the first season at Crystal Palace he, like the rest of us, was just a spectator. For the first season at Chiswick, up until the hiatus in March he helped by marking out the pitch etc. After that , certainly up to the end of the first season back at Crystal Palace he just reverted to spectating again.

So 36 plus years! Could just simply be he has decided he has done his time and wants to retire! Just changed my job after 33 years didn’t leave because it’s poo, could just simply be he wants to watch instead of work at every game.
How many on here stuck with the same employer fr 30 years plus

Was he not Ernie Clays gardener, he got roped in to help out and ended up doing football and rugby. His commitment was such that occasionally when he due to train times he ended up sleeping at railway stations to get to games.

We’ve had the pleasure of quite a few former players coming to games in the last couple of years. Without exception destination one is the changing rooms to talk to Steve. He embodies the truism many seem to forget that a club is much more that the person or people who happen to own it at that particular time. Despite the continuing decline in the Club over the last few years the Broncos are unique; supporting them is a unique experience; and many of the aspects that make this a reality are difficult to define - UNTIL THEY’RE GONE.

Unfortunately, there are no constants in this world, so maybe don’t be so surprised or try to read to much into this, no one goes on forever, but yep shame to see him go. Hope if he comes to watch he gets a free ticket to every game, the bloke has been a good servant to the club.

I would have expected the club to have made an official announcement regarding Steve, thanking him for all he has done for the club etc.
It shows the club in a poor light, for not having done so.

Sad news if correct about SM.......I would be happy to contribute if there were to be a collection to present him with a token of our appreciation.....other than the waste that was MacKay he was the only one left in the dark off season of 13/14......

One was replaced by a plant and the other replaced by an air conditioning unit. As you will have noticed both the plant and air con unit have done a far better job bringing in sponsorship etc.

Which begs the question why the 2 departed were employed at all.

Steve’s reason for leaving, we’re 2 fold. He got frustrated at what he called lack of ambition at the club, shown by the failure to fix simple things which frustrated him, Trailfinders had a new facilities guy come in, Steve spent a day with him on a game day pointing out the issues, lots of notes taken but nothing happened, so he decided he could not contribute anymore.
And he decided he had done his time.
Nothing to do with any management of the team or any backroom fighting.

Everything to do with management, they are the ones that set up the contracts for facilities and manage the day to day business interface. Steve was an end user, and as a consequence of either mis- management, lack of action by mgt and/or lack of business communication he left.

Root cause was lack of mgt action in one form or another (given the information you have provided). Steve is the doer not the decision maker. He raises issues, mgt action them if appropriate Do you see the difference? Maybe I shouldn't have asked that question given your reasoning and lack of understanding of business responsibility.....and you default setting of defending the business.

Can’t really see where I am defending the business, I said it was nothing to do with management of the team, Or any in fighting or general disquiet. And I didn’t defend anyone merely stated his reasoning.

On the facilities at Trailfinders, apparently the RFU have no issue with players and match officials using the same toilets as fans! Hence no great push to provide more toilets, they have built more for away players by the way. And that was the RFU inspection when it became a possibility Ealing could have been promoted.
