| Ten point loss 20-30 from leading 14-10 early second half. We were there with first timers (our knowledge remains closer to first timers than experts in many respects still) so harder to follow what was going on. Defensively we still look a bit suspect especially under the high ball. Macani provided the x factor again. Raiwalui was missing from the 17 and may have made the difference.. Leyland and Horsman are good 21/22 year olds, but the half back position needs some experienced craft to complement them.
Personally I thought there was only one winner and the scoreline was pretty accurate. Not criticising Broncos but feel we need a bit more quality. But the foundations are there, so some additional recruiting would make a big difference.
Not convinced Bassett is the first choice answer, but need to see a bit more of him. Liked what Stock and Silva added.
Crowd looked so much better. 100 in the Hospitality Seats. Numbers wise second only to Widnes in last seasons opener. No longer could you find lots of empty seats to choose from. The Fans area was so much better than the West Stand concourse and opportunities there to improve. I can't comment on pre-Wimbledon although I'm aware of a lot of the issues now. Today was so much better. Weather helped and I had to remind myself it was February which for what is a summer sport (except in June and July at Plough Lane!) suggests the Fans Zone has a lot of potential during the season. This was a step in the right direction and hopefully the club saw what was good and what was not so good off the pitch.

| A key moment today was the penalty Batley kicked in the second half. Possibly 14 all at the time? A high ball was easily dealt with by Alex Walker who handed off to Paul Ulberg. Before any Batley defender got engaged, Batley were awarded a penalty. What was it for? Crossing over? Forward pass? Offside? I don't even no if the crossing over one is an offence. Forward pass I'd have thought was a scrum. Some form of offside sides most likely, especially as the penalty was from distance. Maybe interference on Batley chasing the kick? Anybody able to explain the likely offence?

Was that the dubious late hit on the kicker. The ref missed a worse one for us in the first half.
Let's get some perspective, I think that was the first time we have lost at home to Batley in 35 years. We need to be winning these games.

| I'm sure photos will be released of the crowd as they will look quite impressive. To help anyone estimate the crowd, the East Stand holds around 2,400. Although the stewards moving fans out of the South Stand will likely not know, part of what is officially South Stand seating was utilised today. The centre section of the East Stand looked pretty packed. There were always fans in the Fans Zone/toilets during the match. As mentioned earlier I just about counted 100 in Hospitality. I counted low on seats I thought were occupied and can't say who was "indoors" at any stage but pretty certain the total number was three figures. My guess is a crowd approaching the 2,000 mark. There was enough there today to consider letting the South Stand be used as well as the East Stand in the future.

| I enjoyed the game and thought there was a lot to like about what London did against a good Batley outfit. Yes, it's a bit depressing to hail a defeat by Batley as not too bad, given where the club's used to be in relation to each other, but that's the reality of where Broncos are in 2023.
I was in the West Stand today. The central two sections of the East Stand were busy but it thinned out quickly as you moved down towards the posts. I'd be surprised if it was 2k or so but would love to be wrong.

A scruffy game where both sides made too many mistakes and gave away soft tries. Batley the better side and, dodgy first 2 pointer aside, scoreline about right. We didn’t do enough 2nd half and our flair players didnt make any real in roads. A lot of huff and puff from a number of players but Macani and Ulberg the only real threat. We desperately need someone who is a strong reliable kicker from the tee and from in-play.
In respect of the rest. We do have shirts but don’t appear to have a front of shirt sponsor? I didn’t think to go to the shop - not really signposted but no merch on sale in the Fan Zone which surprised me..The fan zone was decent but not heaving, one consequence was only 2 choices of food the £10 pizza or the £10 burger. As the latter appeared to have the kids frying up and burning things I went for the former. Not sure it’s really match day food especially with limited seating but it was fine. The failure to provide any napkins was in my opinion poor.
Overall this was a much happier event than Widnes last year and may draw people back in but as you say we need some more quality. The new Fijian may assist on that. However the size of Batley players was a real challenge for us and they aren’t the only team like that in this league.

I think you pointed out in an earlier post but sun really does hit you in the eyes in that stand and was a bit of a pain. Bring sunglasses.

Yes I did warn about the sunglasses need. Another reason for allowing people into the South Stand as not everybody is happy staring into the sun nor getting burnt by it. The South and East Stands are interlinked and wouldn't need a huge amount of extra stewarding.

Yep, there were certainly plenty there on cheap or freebie tickets. But like everything it is about retention (which ultimately means paying customers). Work needed on the Fans Zone but the foundation is there to build on.
The best off the pitch position since the Widnes opener ... admittedly everything since then has sat a very low bar.

| Fair score today.
Batley were much more organised at the last tackle. Some good training park moves were working for them with some good angle running, and switching the attack
Broncos made some basicc errors, macani getting taken into touch at a kick return was turning point of game for me. I still think macani gets caught out of position in defence to many times.
Penalty being questioned was for late shot on the kicker, difference between the similar one against London in first half was about 2 seconds! Difference was London players feet were still off ground when he got hit, Batley player kicking foot was back on the ground. All down to timing.
Good crowd and good atmosphere, if it's just that stand that's going to be in use with nothing in the shade its going to be a problem. Food on offer looked good, wonder how many folk knew where club shop was though.
There were more there than club thought, they ran out of paper tickets.

They had napkins (and wooden forks) at the Burger stall ! The Burger guys originally ran a Vegan stall (last year) but included Burgers this season. I'm not a big Burger/Chips fan but it is good quality. £10 is too much for any food from a stall, but second time I've had it this season and I was happy with what I ate. They had three options today, Burger, Hot Dog or Meatless Burger.
Both the Burger/Vegan stall and Pizza van are at AFC Wimbledon matches. Personally I prefer MyPie, Jerk Chicken, Ding Dong (Chinese) and Doner Kebab (occasional football vendor) over both today's options.
I don't think the Broncos did themselves any favours with MyPie (first Bradford home maybe?) leaving them isolated with the Away Fans in the South Stand. £9 for pie, mash and peas raises eyebrows but at least is understood as pricing in London. Not surprised our visitors from up North with no knowledge of the quality of the food, are not going to pay London prices, especially if nobody local is buying and they don't overhear positive comments. In the same way I was going no where near the food at Arsenal (when AFC Wimbledon played there) with their excessive "London Premiership Prices" - possibly £24 for some combo meal.

London prices are pretty difficult to stomach but I think most will feel an oven fired 10inch pizza for a £10 feels a bit different and thus more accept table than a £10 burger and chips which I suspect most up North will feel is a bit strong especially when the chef keeps burning the buns. I think quite a few pizzas and hot dogs got sold so possibly those two concession stands will be back. On a personal level I prefer the £5 pie or hot dog from the stadium concession stand but if a better quality of food experience makes it a better game day experience then I’m happy enough.

Decent point on Macani it was poor when he got dragged into touch but I did think he was one of the few who challenged and broke the line and compared to how anonymous he was for the early part of last season he is a transformed player and an asset.

| Really enjoyed that.Better than expected.Having the crowd in the smaller east stand certainly improved the atmosphere. The fan zone thing could be really good in the warmer weather. It might be an unpopular opinion but I love it that the team play at Plough Lane. It’s a belting little stadium,in a great part of London.
Thought the game itself was really good.Had a sinking feeling when Batley went over early that it might be a long afternoon.Apart from a 15 minute spell in the second half when we were too predictable,we gave a good showing.Hopefully wins come sooner rather than later so fans keep coming back.

| Meadows made a big difference when he came on and showed what we are missing in our halves, Batley's last tackle play's were more imaginative and they were able to play off the platform set by their robust forwards. Quite simply they were better than us in most area's of the field, including some Oscar winning performances. Did my eyes deceive me or did one player appear to headbutt the ground in the tackle?. Of course he got the pen. as well. All adds up to a more experienced team taking home the points. We desperately need a half back.
I can't really comment on the first half as the flipping sun was in my eyes most of the time, WTH is it going to be like in the summer?
Still, won't have to worry the sun next week up in Whitehaven I guess, if I see us lose up there 1 more time I think I will just give up ! For me it's all ready a relegation 4 pointer

| Whitehaven is certainly a game London need to target. The final position this season won't be decided by results against Batley, we know they are the better side.
I think there's enough in the first 17 to avoid too serious a relegation battle but am worried about what happens when injuries strike.
Meadows made a big difference yesterday, the halves is an area that could do with strengthening in an ideal world.

Fair points and it was pretty alarming to watch our drop off in the halves, particularly in the second half. I like Horsman and I think he's a good prospect, but we need a more dominant 7 if we are going to bring the best out of Leyland. We weren't able to hold down a consistent choice at 7 last season and it really told.
I know it's early doors, but we don't appear to have variation in our kicking game, outside of shovel the ball to Leyland on the last and see if he can put a bomb up. It was something we did constantly last season and it doesn't appear to have changed. Having some size in the halves wouldn't go amiss or us either.
I don't mean to dig one person out, but if Raiwalui is fit for Whitehaven we need to be going with him.
