Like passing judgement on budget cuts then, oops sorry used the "C" word.
I actually think Brian will lay out the washing for us all to see - he is that type of guy, otherwise whats the point of the exercise?

I hope you're right. The slump might have started due to injuries coinciding with a run of difficult fixtures, but going into the final half dozen games or so we were as close to full strength as most other teams (if not more so) and didn't have to play any of the sides that eventually finished in the top 6. However, whilst I'd be interested to hear a frank account of what caused this I'm more concerned that whatever the problem was it gets sorted effectively and we're able to start next season as we started this one, and carry that form through to the autumn. As long as that happens I don't feel the need to know any details if those in charge prefer to "keep it in the dressing room".

| Agreed..
There clearly is a problem, whether it be playing personnel, lack of motivation, training practises etc..whatever it is needs sorting and then we can look forward to moving upwards next season (hopefully!!)

| In part one of Mac's end of season review he discusses his recruitment policy for 2009, how preparations began to hot up in Lanzarote, and the nervous wait for the start of the Super League.
Preparations for the 2009 season began in earnest long before the 2008 season was over. A huge part of that was recruitment with a mixture of established, rising and potential stars signing for Quins.
Arriving at the Stoop for 2009 were Luke Dorn, Chad Robinson, Luke Williamson, Jason Golden, Luke Gale, Ben Kaye, Matt Gardner and Mick Nanyn, some of whom made more of an impact than others:
“Without simplifying it too much, recruitment breaks down into three different areas:
“There are players of a certain calibre that you know will play a lot of games and become a regular in your 17 man squad on match days.
“There are also players who you think have a chance; if they improve in certain areas, who knows, they could become a star in our team.
“Finally you also have to recruit people as back up; players you don’t really envisage playing much first team, but will provide cover. It’s a physical sport and quite often - as we well know! - you get injuries.
“Potentially anybody can play first team and keep their shirt, but you do recruit with an understanding of each player’s abilities. Will Sharp is a great example of that; in the season building up to 2008 Will Sharp was going to play reserves and I didn’t really envisage him making any first team games, but look at his progress!”
Having assembled the squad they began preseason training which included a first for Harlequins Rugby League, a training camp in Lanzarote:
“Lanzarote was very successful in that we had seven successive field training sessions without muddy, wet fields hindering what we wanted to achieve.
“The main block of the squad had been under me for the previous two pre seasons, so the culture we’d created was already there. What we needed to work on was how to handle game situations and to do that, we needed a field where we could train without worrying about hypothermia setting in.
“We all worked hard and came out with a massive understanding of what we were trying to achieve this year. “
Returning to London, the start of the new season was imminent, or was it? A serious spanner was thrown into the works when a friendly against Celtic Crusaders had to be cancelled and the opening Super League fixture was postponed.
“There was a bit of a panic as I’d planned for a certain number of games and the weather threw those plans out of the window.
“We got a bit nervous and began to wonder if we were entering this season a bit undercooked. We probably needed an extra game leading into round one (Castleford), because prior to that we hadn’t played for three weekends.
“It was a bit of a nervous time, but all we could do was practise and try to get on with things.”
In part two of Mac’s end of season review, the season begins! Find out what Mac thought about the visit of NRL champions Manly and the start of Super League.

| Great, he hasn't told us anything interesting, apart from the fact we sign people who we know won't make the grade (category C).
Hopefully part two is more interesting.

Tbh, just looks like re-worded statement from the beginning of the season, just added some bits in.

| So no-one on here has learnt anything about how they recruit then?
Nor anything interesting?
I thought it was interesting to see what he had to say to be honest and it's a major thing for a club to do. How many others do it?
And we get a comment like this?

To be perfectly honest those of us who have heard BM speak at events like the Fans Forum and Season Launch over the past 3 years won't find anything particularly new in that piece. We've heard BM praise Sharp for forcing his way into the team with his work ethic, we've heard him praise Joe Mbu for coming back to the club as principally a cover player only to make a real impact for us on his return (shame we didn't see much of him last season as one thing he gives us is effort).
Besides some of the comments are more than a little contradictory considering some of the selections we saw in the second half of last season, pointing the finger in particular at Matt Gafa who retained his spot despite losing all semblence of form and apparent confidence, whilst Tony Clubb who was playing better than Gafa (not particularly difficult under the circumstances) was shifted around from centre, to interchange second-row, to centre, to wing, and even to the reveserves one week. Admittedly as fans we judge performances on the field and don't know what went on behind closed doors that might have seen Clubb messed about whilst BM persisited with abysmal performance after abysmal performance from Gafa.

There was plenty of comment on here about Clubb's defensive failings at centre. I doubt that BM wanted to play him there late in the season but he had little choice with Howell out injured.

Clubb's defence looks worst at third/fourth man in actually. He doesn't read the play and those are key positions when it comes to anticipating what the oppo's halves is going to do. I think his defence at right centre is OKish.

My "...ish" is bigger than yours. There's no reason why he can't be taught to keep his place in the defensive line instead of rushing out to make a big hit. Senior had the same problem when he joined Leeds, but it was soon sorted.
Mind you, Clubb's big hits are worth watching when he does connect. ![Smile icon_smile.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_smile.gif)

| I don't think Clubb's defensive weaknesses are even comparable to Gafa in the second half of the season, he was a complete turnstile, sides quickly realised that all they needed to do was take it down his side and they'll almost certainly get a try, Bradford in particular did it repeatedly (they weren't the only team who noticed), and it wasn't funny when they were doing it over and over again, same weakness identified and pounded over and over again. It was almost soul destroying watching that, but the best came when Gafa got penalised for pulling back Dean Widders against Cas, because he couldn't keep up with him.
Clubb's problem isn't that he can't tackle, it is (as already mentioned) that he can be a bit undisciplined coming out of the line, or not getting back into position when he's playing centre, reminds me a bit of Willie Talau except Talau was greedy and selfish in a way Clubb isn't. But even so, whatever issues there were with Clubb's defence it did not explain playing Gafa when people were walking over him and Dean Widders was walking round him.

I certainly didn't learn much about why we recruit so many average 2nd rows. That could have been interesting.

| The Master Plan Part 4
1) No relegation for 3 years so save money on players
2) Make sure no new signings would displace someone from the reserves
3) Hope after 3 years coaching the kids are good enough for Super League
4) Never do marketing! Try and keep crowds small so they are not disappointed by team in the interim
5) Burst forward after three years with the best young team in SuperLeague!
6) If 5) works do some maketing maybe.

| too many players leaving at the end of the season? If they had already been told they weren't getting a new contract any chance of them still playing their hearts out was even slimmer after Brian publicly criticised them. You get found out in SL if you aren't putting in 100% and im certain there was a good number of players not putting in 100% for the last dozen games.
End of. Bad coaching. Im not interested in hearing anything else about it, time to look forward and do better next year. If not make changes.
