Hastings probably wants a short spell because of the higher money on offer in the NRL and at age 22 it is where he wants to be. So a short spell in S/League where hopefully for him he will be a stand out and prove he can behave himself would make sense. It’s what Barba appears to be doing albeit over a slightly longer period.

He has maybe had NRL interest to sign him next season if he can do this.

We probably and for once rightly were looking for a longer term half back solution and would have wanted at least a 2 1/2 year contract and with Brough being available again three months of Hastings would not make sense if we have an eye on someone else albeit possibly not available until 2019.

Much as it would have been nice to have a young quality NRL half what’s on offer appears to be all about Hastings and little for Huddersfield so for once good move to try get him with his knowing Woolford but wise to withdraw when we did.

Let’s hope he doesn’t come back to haunt us!

Club did the right thing- can’t be held to ransom- Woolford has said he only wants to sign players who want to play for us- hastings is here for a few months then he will go back to NRL. If we’d have given in to his demands and messing about then fans would be moaning about Thewlis paying over the odds etc etc. Even if Hastings helps Salford avoid the drop it doesn’t leave them anywhere better next season.
Keep working on Olly Russell and sign someone who wants to stay here for more than three months. Someone who we can build round.
Salford will have to hope hastings’ visa comes through quicker than Woolfords did or there’ll be little point him coming!

We aught to be trying to temp Drinkwater from the Dragons, not saying he would come as he's very popular there apparently, But when Sam get's there who knows, worth a try IMO

Watched him in the Salford v Widnes game, looks a perfect replacement for Brough. Runs a game well, short and long kicking game, and takes the line on like Danny used to, maybe a chance for next year?

Agreed, he looks the sort of player we need for next season and beyond.

But the reason he’s gone to Salford is he didn’t want to commit to next season and beyond - which is why we walked away

Exactly why I'm glad we didn't chase him now, but he might like England now and if so we need to be thinking about him being on our books for next season.

I'm pretty sure he is holding out on the chance of an NRL deal next year, but if it doesn't materialise we should swallow our pride and be in there. He looks really committed to helping Salford out in the short time he expects to be there too which is a good sign.

I've heard that we're in pole position to sign Tom Holmes following his release from Fev. Not quite a stellar signing but still young and could develop within a season or so to fill Broughy's big shoes !!

So why sign oli Russell to a full time deal?

This has been the rumour amongst Fev fans for a while. The downside from the point of view of anyone signing him is he suffered a very bad knee injury in May and it remains to be seen when he'll be fit to play again. However he's only 22 and I don't know any Fev fans who weren't impressed by him...lively, decent left footed kicking game, and can really spark the attack - Luke Briscoe's much-publicised tryscoring spree came down the side Holmes was playing (the right) and Holmes played an important part in a lot of those tries. He also played very well at full back on a couple of occasions and could also fill in at 9.

the holmes and giants link has been around for a while, were linked with him before his injury so wont be a surprise if he is signed up already.
