I watched the incident and actually thought the guilty look, and arm gesturing from Rangi was to highlight to the ref that he wasn't pulling the player and not what others are saying of him making out he didn't ball steal. That was my immediate thought and watching the replay it made sense to me.

even at the ground we were all convinced he was looking at whether it was a drop out or penalty, not even the cas fans realised he was going for a try! haven't seen the replay but it looked very contentious at the time.

Considering what happened to us last week (ie. taking 3 minutes to disallow the Chev Walker try despite there being obvious doubt as to whether he intentionally knocked on as some camera angles made it look like he didn't even handle it) I was seething with rage at this decision.

When Grix took the tackle he clamped the ball to his chest with both arms wrapped around it. There was no way on earth that ball got spilled any other way than by being ripped out.

Clear as day penalty to Hudds.

But then Hudds may have gone on to win and that wouldnt have been fair on a Cas team that played as well as they could.

I thought it was definitely stripped and even after that I thought the player seemed to lose control of the ball in putting it down.

TBH I think Ben Thaler is the best ref for the giants. Saying that a Wigan fan (or any other fan) would probably say thaler is a unfair ref and is biased towards Hudds.

Watched it a few times now and to be honest there isnt a conclusive angle that gives any reason to disallow the try. We all suspect Rangi Chase stripped the ball but unless the VR can be 100% certain that it was stripped the protocol states you cannot disallow the try. So by the letter of the law its a try

So basically if we get 5 fellas surround a player who's being tackled in goal, strip the ball out so it can't be seen by cameras, then it'll be a try?
Rangi Chase gave himself up by raising his hands when the ball came loose. Anyone with half a brain cell knows you never see a player raise his hands trying to look innocent unless he's guilty.

One of the problems for me was, even before the strip and even if you can't directly see Rangi Chase strip the ball he was dragging - which if I remember correctly isn't allowed?

Personally it was a no try, however it wasn't what lost us the game and the thing to remember is the team will have an off-day, maybe it's a good thing the team got it out of their system early on? Who knows...

One thing I did note this weekend with our game and the Hull vs. Leeds game on sky was the referee’s reluctance to award penalties - it's almost like they were trying to balance out the Millennium Magic weekend. Might check the stats later when I get chance...

But to put the whole thing in perspective as bad aswe played we were only that try away from getting a point.

If we can be close to a point after playing so badly we can feel optimistic that we will be getting lots of points when we play well.

ATEOTD It was never never ever a try but if Cas has not won the game it would have been an injustice. They were by far the better team and we were just not at the races. Will need to improve this week against Hull who will be looking for their 1st points, should be tasty

I'm not saying I agree with the decision but I'm saying by the letter of the law it was the correct decision.

I'm just using common sense which some refs seem unable to use. Rangi Chase has his hands on the ball but then due to numbers of other players the sight is lost. Then Rangi raises his hands(why else would he do this if he hadn't stripped it?). I'm no rocket scientist but it's not hard to work out what happened whilst the ball is out of sight.

Common sense or no common sence the try cannot be disallowed on the assumption that Rangi Chase stole the ball. Are you saying that if I am out refereeing a match on Saturday and the ball comes loose in goal and I have no way of knowing how (i.e. i cant see if hands were on the ball etc) then I should just aware the try because someone could have ripped it out?

The VR protocol for benefit of the dount states (and this is word for word from an RFL document) "In situations where the video referee has viewed all available angles and there is still doubt then the benefit of the doubt should go to the attacking team and the try should be awarded"

By definition the attacking team isnt the team that has possession of the ball but the team that has territorial advantage - i.e. Castleford in that senario!

I suppose each scenario is different. All i'm saying is that it was obvious on this occasion that Rangi stole the ball from his body language. Had he not been seen with his hands on the ball before it went out of view then fair enough benefit of doubt, but for him to be pulling on the ball then the next thing is him with his hands in the air only means one thing to me and most people.

The law or the ref who had a birds eye view of the incident is an ass then

Saying that we didn't deserve to win and in all honesty we were never at the races, a big improvement needed this w/end.

Lets just agree that the correct decision was made!
