| That's the key Brearley, time, we need to give him time to settle and to learn our club, our players and then we can bringing him on how we want him to be, but i suspect there is going to be a lot of unfair expectation on him sooner than later.
our fans don't seem to have any patience, so if he doesn't rip it up in his first 3 games expect him to be slated.

I still cannot see it as Brierley is likely to be in for Grix. Unless our plan is Wood and Ellis for next season.
Who knows'"
Well if the plan is Wood and Ellis then It's a very poor one, They are both honest triers but are not going to take the Giants to the next level. Also if the plan is to let Brough go then somebody at the Giants wants their bumps feeling, He is still the best player we have had in decades, and needs someone to play alongside him not replace him, I can't believe anyone at the club is quite that stupid, unless of course they are happy to see people drift away.
Brierley could be the Ideal player, with an eye for the gap and the pace to take it on, His supposed weakest point is his tackling, that just means he needs a really good ,mobile LF to take care of him, like the Wild bull used to do with A Murphy.
As Meast has said he will need to be given time, but anybody with a strike rate like he has had, has some talent.

| Quote ="brearley84"yes, and some leigh fans say it his best position'"
He has hardly played full back at all in his 4 and a bit years at Leigh. I think he has played there once or twice but I can't recall which games.
A lot of people do think that full back would suit his style of play though. Would remove the expectation of a kicking game and the organising role which aren't really his strengths.
He is lightning fast with great acceleration. Reads a game very well and is always there in support for a break of half break and if you can get it to him in space, it's game over. Not many will catch him even in SL. Got a very good eye for an interception and, again, rarely gets caught if he pulls it off.
He rarely plays at the line which can be frustrating. He tends to wait for a gap instead. 90% of his tries seem to be scored without a finger laid on him. Kicking game has improved over the years but is nothing special. Defence is suspect with a tendency to shoot out the line but that would be negated by playing him at Full Back.
He is an odd player to categorise, he has played nearly all his career at 7 and yet his passing game and kicking game are not all that spectacular. He is an unbelievable support player with great speed and a knack for scoring a lot of tries. I think he could be a big success at Hudds and at Full Back.
Currently very p****d off at how he has treated my club and glad he has gone as his position was untenable with his comments and actions in recent weeks. However I will watch his career at Hudds with interest and once the dust has settled I think I will be wishing him all the best for his future.
Hope it turns out to be a good deal for all parties. Also, I am glad he has gone to you lot and not Leeds!

Agreed, with a potentially added caveat, he could be twice the player although I see him at Stand Off eventually.

again no one can question the giants desire to succeed after this signing, leeds, salford wanted him but he came to us and it sounds like anderson and thewlis played a big part in him deciding where to go. anderson has done well with his castleford links, brierley played for cas previously.
nice to get one over on leeds too after they signed ferres and mullally.
the ferres money will have gone now on this lad as he wont have been cheap.
we have to give the lad time too as its a step up from the championship but we all know his potential.
i dont expect to see the best of him till next season, its going to be hard to adjust so give him time.
he can replace brough long term but i expect he will play full back for us in the short and replace grix.'"
I think the reason we landed him was two fold. First of all Leigh were approached in the proper manner and with respect.
Secondly I reckon rowley played a massive massive part. Rowley had little respect for hetherington and Leeds due to how they treated him as a young player. He had a lot of respect for Huddersfield following his short time with us and has talked about the professional way he was treated when at hudds.
I have my misgivings about the length of contract given he is unproven at SL level, but time will tell.

Keiron Purtill could well have been a factor too. Still has strong ties with Leigh and I know he is well respected in the town and around the club.

Or Leeds' interest had cooled off. Lilley has since (slightly unexpectedly) emerged whilst waiting for Brierley. Add in the unplanned addition of Ferres to the SC who only signed a one year deal and will need a probable wage rise new deal soon (the same goes for Falloon at hooker) then we won't have a load of space left.
With your extra cap space with Ferres' departure I'm sure you offered more money and were more desperate given the injury to Grix.

| Was it ever above lukewarm? A couple of years ago Beaumont "warned off" Leeds apparently for an approach which GH quickly dismissed and stated that it was the players agent who approached Leeds. His agent may have been a little mischievous to secure a better deal for his client therefore blame Rhino not the Rhinos! Can't say I'm too fussed about it all but good luck to the lad in SL.

When rowley was at fax they blocked a very lucrative move for him to Wigan. Fax subsequently gave details of his current contract to Leeds (rather naughty) and Gary was rather disrespectful in an offer to him of a fair bit less than he was on (fax had him on the transfer list for what was then a large amount of 350k which they would have had to pay) rowley told GH to stuff it. It's in the public domain in an article from some years ago. He was rather scathing of how fax and Leeds had treated him whilst being very complimentary of how hudds had treated him later and said he would have stayed on if we hadn't been relegated.

| Let's hope the 4 1/2 year contract is justified. He has never played Super League so it will take time to adjust.
What about Simpson ? One of our own, I had high hopes of him at full back. Seems Grix exit at end of season will please all his critics. Tansey and Foster surplus to requirements , Has Anderson got a plan or being told by the CO who he can have.???

I'm also dubious about 4 1/2 years- it's obviously a gamble but the club seem quite good at "looking after" players. They wanted Ryan to move over here, he's not going to up sticks with his family for a one year deal so it had to be worth his while. We need to show we will invest in him as a player.
Simpson is currently injured too, and we do need another FB at the club! We also need a back up winger as ATM if Murphy / Jerry are injured we would struggle- hence giving foster a go. He seems quite happy with that. Tansey is just a loan for a month to cover our FB injury situation.

I disagree, I can name at least 5 players who are 'hotter property' in the super league and younger than Brierley.
Ben Currie
George Williams
Liam Sutcliffe
John Bateman
Niall Evalds
All of whom have more potential than Brierley and super league experience to boot.
Don't put all your hopes on him and then be suprised when it doesn't work out.

You have a point about the length of contract, but life is full of risks and gambles. The other side of the argument is that not one single player was born a top class or quality player, They were given the chance to prove they were, by showing great promise at a lower level. The other way to do it is to buy ready made class like Brough , and we all know what that costs.
I don't think Brierley will have come cheap by any means, but I am so glad that some body has finally come out and admitted that we were desperate for a player of his style. Whether he is a great success we will have to see, He has proved his try scoring ability a level down from SL, I am really hopeful he will just kick on in SL, It has certainly kindled a bit more interest from me in any event.

That's besides the point, just because he was available doesn't mean he is the hottest property in super league. I'm sure every one of those players I mentioned are highly sought after by clubs over here and in the nrl.
