| I think that rather than the Dewsbury vote being one for the Tories it's against Malik.
I now live in a Tory constituency! 8% swing! I reckon that's a result of Gordon Brown and the Labour Party's policy on housing and the proposals to build on various Green Field sites in the area.
Looks like a hung parliament's on it's way.

| A few people here at work live in Dewsbury. An asian pal of mine has not disclosed who he voted for bt expressed gladness that Malik is out because, IHO, he was dividing the Asian community and was an arrogant tool. He didn't actually say tool but the swear filter would just edit what he did say so tool will have to do!

| Seems like it was a personal thing with Malik then. But when the Tories start slashing public spending ( as would the other parties but probably fairer) and give tax breaks to the Rich they will be regretting it.
Still it is a god election for every party to Lose. Ironically it is a good result for Labour as any governement will find it hard to survive five years and they will have to make a lot of unpopular decisions.

| Well I'm shocked that Jason McCartney got in in my constituency I certainly didn't help him!! I just think of the last tory MP we had Graham Riddick!! He did absolutely nothing!!! Not only do I not trust Jason as he's a tory but also he's a journalist, know's how to spin!! I just hope all these campaigns he's tried to get going like the Bring back maternity services to HRI carry on and succeed overwise I'll have no faith in any tory!! I can't stand Barry Sheerman neither, and I doubt many in Huddersfield actually like him but would never vote for anything other than Labour so he stays!!

| Malik going was nailed on, I think you could have put a stuffed toy against him and he would have won. Malik is a shining example of all thats bad in New Labour and why they have been voted out imo.
I think the end result however is the best of both worlds:
Labour out and change to follow - meaning they wont get the taint of the cuts that are to follow
Tories in, but with no teeth so they cant destroy the economy like they promised, any economic policies will actually have to be balanced and reasoned out in parliement.
The only real way forward is power sharing, and maybe that will force real electoral reform that the country needs imo, after all we are in the usual stance of having a government formed by the party that most of the country didnt want...
Next General Election to be held in 12 months time...with the controling party losing power.

| I wouldn't mind that, especially if it puts a stopper on the Trident spending. I see Clegg has come out and said he considers the Conservatives to be the new leaders so there will be no Labour/Liberal coalition.

| Then he is a staggering idiot, weighed down by his own hubris.
If the Libs EVER want meaningful power, then they would jump to form a government with labour and insist on electoral reform as a key part of it.
Labour will go for it and the Tories just wont touch it, without it, Libs will be back to a small side show in the scheme of things.
Unless the Tories pull a 180 and go for it too. But expect a tory led government to collapse within the year.

Mandelson was on the BBC straight after the Exit Poll results saying how labour would work with the liberals on electoral reform. He may as well have just had - 'phone me Nick' on a banner across the screen.
ATEOD the Liberals will have some sort of bargaining power in a hung parliament with whoever is in overall charge and this may work for their long term progression for proportional representation. Although I bet they thought they would have more seats.
My own opinion is that a hung parliament may work better as there will need to be agreement on policies rather than just forcing them through.

Slight misquote - he says they have the first right to seek to govern, being the party with most seats and votes.
Malik would probably have retained his seat (albeit with a vastly reduced share of the vote) if they hadn't changed the Dewsbury constituency boundaries to include the more affluent areas of kirkburton, denby dale, etc.

Terrible isn't it.
I can only conclude that it's due to a strong campaign from Nicola Turner (who as you'll know has been really active over the last couple of years) and lots of people people still voting for Labour with Debbie Abrahams causing the vote to be split and letting Tory Boy in with that learing woman from Marsden.
You've also got to remember that most of the Holme Valley will be Tory.
I emailed all the candidates (via Amnesty) before the election to ask for their views on human rights both here and abroad. All the candidates replied apart from UKIP, BNP and McCartney, funny that.
Don't know if it's because I'm a comer inner but I've always quite liked Sheerman, better than Kali Mountford who has done nothing for the last few years.

If he was standing then I guess Labour must've been confident of him retaining the seat in spite of his expenses claims. A Homer Simpson moment there.

Please don't get me started on Kali Mountford. I know she has been ill but she was aware of this before she stood in 2005.
Since then she managed to attend Parliament [url=http://www.publicwhip.org.uk/mp.php?id=uk.org.publicwhip/member/1508&showall=yes#divisions47%[/url of the time but still managed to claim the [url=http://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/kali_mountford/colne_valley#hansardmaximum for staying away from home and almost £10k[/url for her husband travelling with her to parliament from the valley

| One thing that cheeses me right off is that I can never seem to find out any information about my local elections. They're no less significant than the parliamentaries, probably more significant in my day to day life. Hell, I didn't even know who my local councillor was before yesterday, never mind what they proposed to do in my area this year to get me to vote for them. You can find anything on the internet but I drew a blank when googling the names of my LE candidates.

I agree 100%, in any other line of work if you're ill and can't do your job then unfortunately you'll probably lose it. Sad but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
If you're an MP you can do virtually nothing for your constituents and then retire on a hugely generous stipend.

| I feel for Malik. He had his faults, but he did get involved in many local campaigns, more so than most MPs. Yet Reevell is just one of Ashcroft's drones who will just do the non-doms bidding. Also Iqbal Kazir got over 3000 votes and I bet if hadn't of stood then most of those votes would have gone to Malik.
