Maybe if we'd shown less "ambition" in 2005, we'd be in a better position now!

The 71 and 82 teams were good honest outfits that Murphy got the best out of. In both instances he left soon after and the nucleus of side either went with him, broke up, or retired and we didnt build on what was left for various reasons.

I'm not blaming Murphy for not building upon it but dont forget within a year or two the teams were totally different and we lost direction.

In my opinion we were punching above our weight with an above average but hardworking and honest team on crowds of less than 5000. Don't forget we had to sell the training ground in the 80's to keep us live.

SL.....we built a squad a month after the pick of the bunch had been signed up by other SL teams. It was always going to be tough to build a decent team in those circumstances particularly if we would only commit to one year deals for highly paid players (it would have been financial suicide to do anthing else).

I dont like it anymore than you, but ambition is one thing, cutting your cloth to suit is something else.

We've only had 2 good teams in almost 40 years, a few half decent ones, but apart from that we're an average club, with average support, from an average town.

Lets not forget the board of directors have changed umpteen times too

I keep reading on here that the Rowleys are not very well liked in rugby , i thought fans where glad when Paul came back to play for us so can someone please enlighten me on what the problem is ,this is a genuine question.

Rowley snr put his large foot in it re his reply to the rl on Leigh not gaining entry to super league,plus he does B...r all.paul is regarded as arogant and is not a team player

Lets not get into character asassination of the the Rowleys now. Both Alan and Paul are very decent people. What the pair of them have done for our club should never be forgotten. Having said that (and it is with regret that I say this) Paul and some of the back room staff are the only common denominators for the way we play. I'm sorry to say that I too think they should be replaced and NK to bring in his own team.

Paul was a fantastic player for us and others, a player we have never replaced since his retirement.
He did acquire a certain knickname within the game which is not very complimentary and has resulted in some people refusing to work with him.
I could never fault his effort in a Leigh shirt, but could not see why we allowed him to remain in a job when retiring so prematurely from the player/asst role, we needed to take his wages and find another player/asst coach of the same quality, we didnt and suffered as a consequence.

This figure is irrelevant anyhow, those of us who have been around long enough know this venture will not suceed

No idea about that one mate, all I recall was it was sold to pay off debts but I'm sure there are more in the know abot that than me and thee.

It wouldn't suprise me anymore than finding out we got £10million for it and spent it all on Jaffa Cakes. You know what urban myths are like in this town.

What Al Rowley said to the Media ect re Leigh Centurions not getting a franchise was SPOT ON and i applaud him everyone knew it was a
disgrace giving the Welsh Team a franchise before Leigh or Widnes

That seems to be the general opinion however, I was pleased someone had the b@@ls to speak out. I really never believed we would gain a Franchise, all the surveying of grounds and points etc... All through this process the Rugby Media/Fraternity had said Salford and Crusaders would be promoted, nice costly exercise though!! I know Salford won the GF and Celtic played in the Final however, Salford came down with virtually their Super League squad minus Robinson, think Myler and Paul made up for him though! As for their new 30 thousand seater Stadium to be ready at the end 2009, has anyone seen it!

He was based in Tyldesley and had really poor eyesight but not as bad as the rest of the board who did not see what he was doing,was it not Sharman or something like that.

It was sold for way under its true value and the club got sweet FA out of it, best bit of business B&Q ever did.

The car park at the front of the training pitch, which was far larger than the training pitch, was not owned by Leigh Rugby, it was iirc owned by the council. The council got a far larger share of selling the land than Leigh Rugby.

The training pitch was owned by Leigh rfc and they got around iirc £250K which was what they owed the taxman and VAT, the other land (car park) was council owned.
