| Penalty try correct decision, pass inside that Smith got to was forward before Smith touched it, correct decision - forward pass before penalty try given but VR cant make a call on that
Thought Donlans was a try, at worst a BOD decision.
As stated we should have got slaughtered.

They're not at all uncommon. Must be a couple of dozen a season.
Now if you'd said eight point tries - can't remember the last one of those I saw.
And three point drop goals - I saw one once, about 20 years ago, but I can't find anyone else who's even heard of one, let alone seen one.

Can't count that one, pal. Jamie was just proving that refs don't know the laws of the game.

I actually conceded an eight point try in an amateur game (Bristol Sonics v Redditch Ravens) about five years ago. The 'eight point try' rule is there to penalise foul play IN THE ACT OF SCORING. So, for example, if someone was scoring a try and you punched them in the face. A bit of an extreme example, but a good one. The ref in the Sonics-Ravens match gave an eight point try against the Sonics because I shoved the scorer after he'd put the ball down. A petty thing to do, but having chased him 50 metres, and being a prop (where were the speedsters?), I was a bit annoyed. I said to the ref that it couldn't posibly be an eight point try and he sin-binned me.
I chatted to him afterwards, explained what happened exactly, and he admitted that he'd made a mistake.
That's the only time I've seen one though.

| Had Eagles lost they would have been wronged, they were far and away the better side. What bothers me is going to games when Hicks is the referee! He dosn't know the meaning of consistency or, fairness! How many times do you see challenges like Hills, in the course of the game? and, how many are punished by sin binning? When Ablett 'Pole Axed' Tomkin at Leeds a while ago Ablett was put report, not sin binned thus his team didn't suffer from being a player short! When Robbie Paul was later similarly challenged the Eagles player wasn't even spoken to! Eagles try to level at 12 all had at least two forward passes in the move but, that dont matter. The best team won no doubt about it.

I'm not so sure he would have. The ball was travelling at pace and bobbling about. How many times have you seen those fluffed? I think he would probably have scored. Is that enough to give the penalty try? I don't think according to the rules that it is. Thats why penalty tries are so rare. Are there any occasions when a try would definately be scored? Its not the easiest of rules to interpret!!

| DEFO A PEN TRY....DENIED A TRY SCORING OPP WITH FOUL PLAY. SIMPLES.
TALKING ABOUT AN 8 POINT TRY, THERE WAS ONE IN THE NRL LAST WEEK. THE HIGHLIGHTS WERE ON BEFORE YOUR GAME LAST NIGHT.
SYDNEY VS MANLY
JAMIE LYON ELBOWED A ROOSTERS PLAYER IN BACK OF HEAD AS HE WAS SCORING A TRY....EVEN THOUGH THE REF GAVE THE TRY AND CONVERSION FROM TOUCHLINE...HE THEN GAVE A PENALTY UNDER THE STICKS, WAS A NEW ONE FOR ME.

| Its not that long ago that penalty tries were given more readily but they changed the rules to make it harder to give one ,the video ref has to be 100% certain that the player would have scored and thats why you don't see them awarded as much ,i've seen numerous times in SL when i've thought" surely thats a pen try "but they don't give it.Don't know about last nights was too far away and can't bring myself to watch the match again yet but apart from that Sheffield were the better side without a doubt and i can see them winning next week

Think the point being made is that the original conversion was taken from the touchline though, whereas I was under the impression that both kicks would be under the sticks.

| Isn't an an eight point try where the try is actually scored and a foul is committed on the scoring player. Whereas a penalty try is where an offence is committed that stops a try being scored, therefor the bonus is the conversion under the sticks. Two completely different scenarios

Not entirely sure Demon, but I was under the impression that both scenarios meant conversions under the posts.

| Wonder if the worst possible RL punishment has ever been given out. 8 point Try/penalty and player sent off - now that could be a game changer and half

It's always been the case for an "8-point try" (or 7-point try as it used to be) that the conversion was taken as normal, in line with where the try was awarded, then the subsequent penalty from between the posts. For a penalty try the conversion is taken from between the posts.

| When a player is fouled whilst scoring a try firstly the try is awarded, the conversion is taken level with the point of scoring and then the penalty for foul play is taken from in front of the sticks. It is only an "eight point try" if both kicks are successful.

Could not have put it better myself ! Absolutelt spot on !
Last 8 point try I saw was in 87-88 ?
Leigh v Wigan and Tony Cottrell put his knees right into Henderson Gills head. Granted, Gill was goading him at the time. NOT CLEVER !!
Cottrell sent off, but saying that, it finished 11 v 11 that day !!
Does anyone else recall this ?
The two Wigganers I think were Andy Platt and Andy Goodway. Was the other Leigh player Dave Evans ?

| For me the try came from a delibrate forward pass, seems to happen a lot where a video ref is involved teams just throw the ball forward to get it into the in goal area knowing the ref will go to the screen & cannot look at forward passes.
Similar with drop outs under the sticks becoming punts from under the sticks.
Wanted Leigh in the final, but though Sheffield just looked more assured on the ball, too many mistakes from Leigh.
