Sad news! R I P

can't believe this has happened. VERY SAD.

Lessons need to be learned by this very sad happening. For all his misgivings this young tallent and his familly did not deserve a day or life like this. I was one one of his biggest critics but I am gutted for all of them and hope that they can only remember the good memories.

Very sad news, I heard rumours this morning that something was amiss but didn't believe them. A terrible shock. R.I.P

Also thought Eddie Hemmings' comments were quite insensitive: "He'll go down in history as a cheat." Maybe so but today was not the day to point that out. Whatever his flaws he had, its a sad day for the game.

A very sad end to a life. He must have been in a really dark place.

He was a very good player and it is disturbing when something like that happens.

Not a fan, but he was obviously deeply troubled.....and tragedies like this place life's everyday problems into perspective. It is his family that you have to feel for at this time.

Absoloutley shocking news!

Wasn't his biggest fan to say the least but an undoubted talent and one of those you would love to have in your team no matter how much you dislike from an opposition point of view!

I had no time for Newton but that is an outrageous comment from Hemmings given how he died...

I think it's fair to say that Newton was one of those players that opposition fans loved to hate, and I think us Leythers are the epitomy of that - certainly wouldn't have complained if he'd have turned out for Leyth at some point though.

It does re-open the question of mental health issues and why it is such a taboo subject - the clubs, the RFL and society in general should be doing more IMHO to assist those players who find themselves cast aside from the game, be it almost self-inflicted in Newton's case, or by injury etc and ensure that lessons are learnt by this terrible episode.

I have no doubt whatsoever that the real RL community spirit will shine through Saturday's minute's slience will be impeccably observed, and thirty four rugby league players will present the ultimate tribute and come up with an absolute corker of a final deserving of his memory.

Hadn't heard about Hemmings' comments until reading this thread - after witnessing first hand yesterday the grief of some of those who knew Terry, the bloke should be ashamed of himself.

Spot on Matt. The guy who wrote both Terry's and Cris Radlinsky's books said that Cris also suffered when he finaly had to finish playing. He said that when he spoke to Terry he had said that he was finding it hard to keep up with the riggors of the game and even harder coming to terms that it could end. All sports should have some sort of cushion for these people and spot the problems when they are at early stages. These sports stars must feel used when they come to the end of their careers and then are just left to their own devices. Not saying all are like this but the vulnerable ones need to be identified and helped.

When you have been used to something for so long whether its sport, or like me I had the Army, its very hard to come to terms with when its over for whatever reason. We had no-one to turn to after the gulf war and I was out on civvy street looking after myself after all those years having the Army doing everything for me.

It must be similar being a pro sportsman then leaving the game you loved with all the comeradery and then having it all taken away. Its a massive life change and someone should be there to help IMO.

Terry Newton may have been fit but not it seems healthy in the mind ,i understand what you are saying but a person must be in a very bad place to take their life

Thats the bit everybody mis understands, I understand what Mr C is saying but Terry was not fit and healthy. Mental illness is bad but unknown mental illness is truly horrible.

Not that black and white maybe you have never been close to someone with mental health problems.

Re Chris I think most know that.

The selfish part is those left behind are affected for life, feel so sorry for his children.
