| Quote ="topleyther"Leigh are being coached by one of the most highly qualified coaches in the RL, Paul Rowley has a level 3 coaching certificate together with Neil Jukes's level 2 (studying level 3 at the moment), the 'new guy' if he is appointed will either take the title General Manager with duties more than team one's and will work towards the level 3, that will be either of the antipodeans or the 3rd guy who is already based in this country.'"
I was a little surprised to learn Paul Rowley was advising with the signings. This follows on from my viewing of a fans forum when it emerged that one of the first jobs on the second coming of Ian Millward was to reduce the budget afforded to the playing staff. This would mean that Rowley had a squad of players assembled with one of the highest budgets which only escaped relegation in 2009 because the above mentioned David Woods had taken steps towards an Employment Tribunal and his former club was liquidated to prevent him getting any compensation.
I thought Fred would be impressed with Gateshed Thunder completing the double over Leigh with a number of the players either signed by DW or developed by him,(but not coached by him, that year.) Perhaps not !
I am NOT his agent by the way.Wouldn't have thought he needed one - with his qualifications.
Still, they do say 'If you always do what you always did you always get what you always had.'
Sincere good luck.I admire the support you have for your club.

| If Blackmore or Anderson aren't appointed coach then I'd be happy enough to have Paul Rowley as our coach for the season until we find the right coach to take us forward. Paul knows the Championship inside out, we can't get relegated & I'm sure working along side IM he would of picked up some good coaching tecniques learning from the best.

| If all potential coaches have to do these badges (as they do in football too), will they all not be clones doing the same things? Surely being a good coach is about doing something a bit different to all the others, or thinking about tictacs in a different way. Never understood this.

| Wasn't at last nights meeting so I'm presuming the talk was of employing a unqualified coach.
If you have ambitions to be a coach then you will have got the badges required.
If we are appointing coaches without the required credentials then we are going down the wrong track IMO, Unless thats what all successful clubs do.

For some reason some people on here choose to talk bull5hit with regards Paul. Paul helped to build the squad of the last 2 years and has played a pivotal role in signing class players such as Beswick this season.
He's a leyther through and through, given many years top class service to Leigh yet people appear to have a vendetta against him, why = God only knows!!

Why, did Alex Ferguson have coaching badges when he started, or Brian Clough, or Bobby Robson? (not sure but I think not). Did Alex Murphy?

If they was starting now they would have.
Sure I've read Ferguson is a big fan of it (certainly he's done speeches to various coaching courses) so if it was in then I'm certain he'd have done them.
If the sport places importance on them (and from a legal point I can see the reasoning in this day and age) then we should be employing people who have them IMO.

vendetta seems a bit strong tipster.he wasnt a success as coach.
he worked with Basil who is said to have had an input into the next choice so, presumably, he didnt reccommend him.
he apparently has a 2,3 or 4 year contract, dependant on which post you read on here, at a time we are making people redundant ,or short paying them.
we are told some applicants for the job withdrew when they heard what money was on offer.does that mean we are over committed on the money we are paying the existing coaching staff, cant afford to pay them off and that has cost us the coach we really wanted.
This is nothing personal against anyone its just another one of those debatable areas within the club that leads to rumour, frustration and debate.
not having a manager/coach in place now is not ideal lets hope the applications to ukba are in order and we move on

| I find it hard to believe that Blackmoor has no coaching qualifications as he was voted Coach of the year in NZ in 2010 and coached the Auckland Vulcans to the Grand Final of the NSW cup (one of the leagues below (and a feeder league to) the NRL).

He's never been coach he was caretaker after a disastrous reign under Kelly. Incidentally last coach Basil picked was Darren Shaw

It would seem that the English RFL requires more advanced coaching 'badges' than Australia and New Zealand. Hence our domination of those two nations, at international level, this past 20 years!

Would you rather fly on a plane thats been maintained by a qualified mechanic who has done all the studying on how to repair things, looked at problem solving and is confident in what he does because he knows he had to work hard to get his Mechanic certificate and its recognised worldwide.
Or would you rather fly on a plane thats maintained by a ex captain who is now a mechanic after retireing, no qualifications as didn't have the time to do the course, but says he knows the aircraft inside out as he flew them for years

I'd take the mechanic everyday.
A retired pilot or a rookie may think he's good, might have been good even, but the reality is he might not be as good as he thinks he is nowadays as things change by the hour let alone by the day , its easy to get out of touch.
The mechanic will be working to structures , have a pilots licence and know about the overall picture and the ins and out of the Aircraft not just how to fly / taxi it so if he thinks he has no idea he has a reference or a group of people to bounce ideas off.

Nobody said he had a pilots licence , he's a mechanic
And who mentioned a ' retired ' pilot
I'd not want the pilot fixing the plane , but I'd damn sure not want to mechanic flying it

| I remember Murph saying that once he got summoned to do a coaching badge....about the late 80's.
Of course he did it and said the only thing it taught him after sitting though a couple of sessions (being taught by someone who'd never actually coached a real team) was that it made him realise why there were no decent coaches any more.
He always said you can't teach someone how to coach, you can only teach them the rules, and no matter how many badges or levels you have if you haven't got 'it' then you're just wasting your time. His hero was (and still is) Jim Sullivan and said he learned more about coaching from him than he could have learned in a thousand years in a classroom.
