| Egremont Rangers 40 v 30 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners winning start to the season ended on Saturday afternoon when they went down 40-30 away at Egremont, the home side hitting the men from Twist Lane with a five try first half blitz to leave Miners with to much to do despite a spirited second half fightback.
Miners started the game well and controlled the opening fifteen minutes or so, but the only pressure they turned into points was when Scott O'Brien jinked his way over the line on the right to make it 4-0. Egremont hit back a few minutes later with a Peter Bewsher try, Ross Brookes converting to give the score 6-4. From that try the rest of the half was all Egremont, has they took total control, Miners not helping themselves at times with giving away soft penalties and not getting the bounce of the ball, but their was no stopping the home side playing downhill, scoring four more tries through Leon Crellin, Rhys Davies, Matt Bewsher and Ryan Barnes, Ross Brookes converting three of the tries to give Egremont a comfortable 28-4 half time advantage.
Miners again scored first in the second half, Mike O'Boyle going over on fifty minutes, Jonny Youds adding the extras to make it 28-10. Egremont scored their sixth try of the afternoon a few minutes later when Matt Bewsher scored his second of the afternoon, Barnes again adding the extras to take the gap between the sides to 24 points. The visitors then had their own purple patch, scoring three tries in eight minutes, Adam Thomason, Brad Hargreaves and Mike O'Boyle all touching down, Youds though only managing one conversion to put Miners within ten points with the score at 34-24. Any chance of a comeback where ended with a few minutes remaining when Egremont's MOM Kieran Glenn went over to make it 38-24. Shaun Dowie scored Miners sixth and final try to make it 38-30, but the last points of the afternoon went to the home side. Ross Brookes adding a penalty goal right on full time as Miners frustrations boiled over. Ellis Grimes being penalised and sent off for foul and abusive language and to add more salt into the wound, Jonny Youds was also sent off after the final whistle for the same offence.
Miners are away again next week at Lock Lane.
