| Wigan St Pats 14 v 24 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners completed a league double over Wigan St Pats yesterday afternoon, winning 24-14 on a warm but emotional day at Clarington Park after the club where rocked earlier in the week with the very sad news of the passing of current open age player Anthony Hughes. Both teams where missing a few big names in their side, more so St Pats and the young lads who stepped up in their place certainly didn't look out of place and was a credit to there club in what has been a very difficult week for the Wigan outfit. The game was played at a very fast pace throughout and it was the visitors who opened the scoring early on when Jimmy Muir went straight through a gap to score at the side of the posts, Jonny Youds Converting to make it 6-0 in favour of Miners. From the restart Miners where pinged for a penalty at the play the ball and from that all the possession swung St Pats way, with Miners being under constant pressure from back to back sets and giving away needless penalties to keep the home side camped on Miners line. Although Miners defended well in the long spell they was stuck on their line, the pressure finally told with St Pats posting tries from one of their props and hooker Brad Smith to put them 10-6 in front. Miners hit the front again just before half time when Jonny Youds went over out wide to score and convert his own try, giving the visitors a slender two point advantage leading 12-10 going into the sheds at the break.
St Pats got back in front early on in the second half with their third try of the afternoon to lead 14-12, but that lead didn't last for long as Jonny Youds went over untouched from a scrum about forty yards out to score, Youds converting his own try for a second time to put Miners 18-14 in front. The home side tried to hit back with another spell on the visitors line but could find no way through a tough hard working Miners defence, the score stayed at 18-14 until the final minute of the game but during that time Miners should have been out of sight with them being on top, having two tries disallowed and a tired St Pats side not really offering much in their attacking play. Jack Probert Scoring the final try of the afternoon on the back of a St Pats error, Youds landing his fourth goal to give Miners a 24-14 victory over their local rivals.
Miners are at home next week against Hull Dockers in the league.
