| Bradford Dudley Hill 18 v 42 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners booked themselves a place in the quarter final of the Conference Challenge Trophy yesterday afternoon after winning 42-18 against an ill disciplined Bradford Dudley Hill side in what was a very warm day in Yorkshire. It was the home side who made a perfect start to the game scoring inside the opening minute, Nathan Kitson finishing off a break from their left second rower to score at the side of the posts, the try being converted to give Dudley Hill a 6-0 lead. That lead was increased to 8-0 when the home side slotted over a penalty goal but that soon changed when Miners, who where poor for most of the first half had a good spell of possession scoring two tries. The first coming from winger Andrew Groves who finished off some good attacking play down the right to score in the corner, and the second coming from captain Scott O'Brien who cut through the Dudley Hill defence to score at the side of the posts, Jonny Youds converting to put Miners in front at 10-8. Dudley Hill added a second penalty goal just before half time to tie the game up at 10-10 going into the break.
Miners come out of the sheds much stronger in the second half after a poor first half showing, taking control of the game early on with tries from forwards Dave Rowlands and Tom Farrimond followed by arguably the try of the match by Shaun Dowie who got on the end of some excellent work from Jonny Youds, that third second half try putting Miners 26-10 in front. Any hopes of a Dudley Hill comeback was ended with about twenty minutes remaining when there way of trying to get back into the game was trying to rough Miners up, that backfiring when they had two players sin binned for head butting and punching, a third player being sin binned not long after with the home side again letting themselves down with more ill discipline. In this period Miners scored three more tries from Tom Parkinson Jack Probert and Jimmy Muir, Jonny Youds converting two of the three tries to put Miners well in control at 42-10. The home side scored two late consolation tries from winger Neil Wall to give the final score 42-18 for Miners and setup a repeat of last years final with a home quarter final tie against Wigan St Pats.
Miners are away again in the league next week against local rivals Wigan St Pats.
